  1. Re: 6th Edition Character Sheet I'm in the same boat as you. The main issues with removing costs comes with Multipowers and Equipment, due to program output. I could post the current incarnation of my work in progress when I have the opportunity for you to look.
  2. Re: Interesting discussio on the future of Hero System on rpg.net I understand your concern to a degree, but do you feel cheated for buying HERO System Equipment only to find a chunk of weapons reprinted in Fantasy HERO and HERO System Martial Arts? What about Lucha Libre HERO?
  3. Re: Interesting discussio on the future of Hero System on rpg.net I think I need to rephrase that. When you read genre books, they put the rules in a certain context. For example, STR is more important in Fantasy than it usually is in Sci-Fi. I didn't mean that the rules literally change from genre book to genre book; just that the core text of the basic rules is sharpened for genre context. As for your first counterpoint, how would it punish core players? I said they would have the basic rules, as opposed to the complete rules. I suppose it could be argued that that means that players who buy the core rulebooks are getting some condensed, reprinted text, but I'm looking at it as a means to make genre books stand alone with the implication that a pair of books greatly expand upon the material presented within
  4. Re: Interesting discussio on the future of Hero System on rpg.net I agree that HERO's problems more likely than not stem from the crappy economy, but if it's going to survive solutions need to be considered based on the situation at hand. I know that our solution ideas are all unsolicited, but I think we are all discussing such so that the powers-that-be figure out something and get us more of the game we all love. Now, what if genre books came with the Basic HERO rules weaved into them? Perhaps the rules could furthermore be modified to more specifically emulate the genre at hand?
  5. Re: Interesting discussio on the future of Hero System on rpg.net I agree with this, now that you mention it. While I appreciate a setting having history, side it can provide plot hooks, most of the time I've noticed that PCs pay more attention and care more about history of their own game rather than the history of the setting they play in. I think that the HERO universe is still relatively reasonable in its use of metaplot, but that does remind me of one of the reasons I dislike the L5R and Rifts settings
  6. Re: Interesting discussio on the future of Hero System on rpg.net . I think HERO needs to embrace that it keeps coming back after years of loyal fan support. Make access easier with a free PDF of the Basic rules. Keep PoD and any Hard copies of the basic rules as cheap as possible. The main rule book(s) we all know and love are the "upgrade" that costs money. This would be similar to how Risus, FUDGE, and FATE all have free rules but upgrades that cost money. From there, support the Basic rules in official releases in ways that make the books usable, but with the implication that the advanced rules make it a whole lot more fun. Moving on, any physical copies could be made thinner with a few changes. First, I know what many think about this already, but thinner paper helps make the books look less intimidating in my opinion. Second, could the general font size be reduced at all? Could a thinner font style be used? Ask three of those could make the rules that little bit less intimidating and thus more prospective players may check it out.
  7. Re: Turakian Age meets Terran Empire Ah yes. I've given some thought to the fact that alien races would have magic too. I think that most races would know all of the general arcana just as they have the same general technology in TE, with various strengths and shortcomings compared to Earth/Ambrethel. Some unique magic to boot of course, just as Trolls have their own magic and the like. I do know that I must consider psionics versus magic. Psionics probably ought to be a branch of magic, but perhaps they are more akin to "wild talent" magic. That could be interesting considering that most magic is conducted through magitech... I think I could easily fuse the Church of the Infinite Dark with DEMON rather easily. Actually, it will probably be quite fun translating Champions characters to such a setting.
  8. Re: Turakian Age meets Terran Empire You're on a similar track to what I think. First, I do intend for it to have "magitech" in a similar vein to WH40K, where everything seems too fall somewhere in between magic and science. Basically, Clarke's Third Law meets Niven's Corollary. Second, racial issues was indeed an early thought. I have two ideas that could be compatible. One is that, due to proportion of races, humans continue to dominate the planet. Additionally, "half-races" are more common and possibly rival pure races. I had the idea that a similar phenomenon occurring amongst Dwarves and Halflings - thus more Gnomes - as well as among the Orc-kin (Orcs, Goblins, and Trolls), which made me think of two possible new "subraces" that would be like Hobgoblins (1/2 Orc, 1/2 Goblin) and Bugbears (1/2 Orc, 1/2 Troll) in D&D. I do wonder the fates of the Drakine, Erqigdlit, Leomachi, Pakasa, and Seshurma. The other idea, which could work with the preceding idea, is that of a colonized moon and terraformed Mars and Venus, possibly other works throughout the sugar system. And yeah, I pretty much do need to have dragons versus space fighters.
  9. Re: Turakian Age meets Terran Empire I believe it was Dragonstar, now that you mention it. I think War hammer 40K comes closest to what I envision, in that it has that sort of special effect that lies somewhere between technology and magic, but doesn't necessarily favor either in terms of presentation. I wish I knew the trick to making that merger. In many ways, this setting is where Clarke's Third Law and Niven's Corollary clash, or come together, or something life that.
  10. For a long time I have owned both the Turakian Age and Terran Empire campaign books, but I could never quite get a campaign off the ground for a variety of reasons. Then I came up with a way to merge them. It comes down to this: what if that apocalyptic battle against Takofanes never happened? The Valdorian and Atlantean Ages never happened, nor any dark ages in between them. Magic never crashed, but instead slowly waned until society uses advanced artifacts (i.e. "magitech" or the like) to conduct much of what magic used too do. Last, it managed to take to the stars and become a member of the galactic community. The idea is that of a more literal fusion of High Fantasy with Space Opera. Perhaps it could be called "High Science Fantasy." First, what does anyone think of the idea? Second, while I plan to share some of my ideas regarding the possibilities, I'd like to hear some of my fellow HEROphiles' uninfluenced ideas first. What kinds of possibilities might such a different history hold for Earth and the alien races of the galaxy?

  12. I think I already know the answer to this one, but I figured I'd ask to be sure. Could a player combine Offensive Haymaker with the standard Haymaker maneuver to add 8 Damage Classes at the penalties of -5 OCV and -5 DCV and the other penalties normally invited by using either?
  13. Re: I've... forgotten how to run Champions... If I could recommend a comic, it would be Astro City. It provides many refreshing looks at the superhero genre that stray from the same old same old through analysis.
  14. Re: MYTHIC HERO: What Do *You* Want To See? If there is a Legendary Hero in any capacity, perhaps a little discussion about what makes a legend, and thus how to forge a new one within a campaign. For some reason, I think Chuck Norris Facts should factor into the discussion somehow, as they are really just the internet equivalent to the Twelve Labors of Hercules and such when you get right down to it.
  15. Re: MYTHIC HERO: What Do *You* Want To See? What about the Titans of Greek mythology or Giants of Norse mythology? That is, beings who are nlt gods but are on par in various ways. Perhaps you could have a small note regarding the Abrahamic god in that an omnipotent god is beyond the scope of a game system - they're pure plot device. Besides, there's always Atun from Egyptian mythology. Also, what about Lovecraftian gods and demigods? They aren't actual myths, but the Cthulhu Mythos are predicated on being the backdrop of actual history, including religion and mythology as once thought. Perhaps notes on "horrorizing" gods could contain such information.
  16. Re: What are YOUR character trademark(s)? Well, if we're talking non-mechanical things, I tend to go for these things too. I encourage my players to do the same when I GM.
  17. Re: What are YOUR character trademark(s)? I like to give my characters Super-Skills regardless of genre. I think that they help ground a character to the real world in vague ways. Brawler + Looks Worse Than It Is or Can Take A Punch go a long way to ground an otherwise fantastic character in cinematic realism in my opinion. Similarly, I love to build Powers with Requires A Roll so that I get more mileage out of various Skills. Another "trademark" I've been adapting lately are bonus CHAR with OIAID. I call them "Hero Mode Characteristics," which are meant to simulate how, for example, Bruce Wayne generally seems easier to incapacitate than Batman regardless of resources.
  18. Re: Why do people post power costs on their character sheets? I design HD export templates both with costs and without costs myself. I think that costs are good for character approval, but I also think that fewer numbers becomes more immersive. When I post characters here though, of course I post the numbers.

  20. Re: WWE Snark-Free Zone It is depressing to see a bona fide wrestling legend in such dire straits, but hopefully most current professional wrestlers will take note of it. It reminds me of how the Macho Man was infamously "cheap," but who wasn't up to his eyeballs in debt? Mach. Who could live comfortably as a retired pro wrestler? Mach. On the other hand he's dead now, so...
