I am pleased to announce the launch of the HERO System Mobile app on both the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.  You can install the app by searching for it in your app store or by using the links provided.  The app is free to use, ad free, and respects your privacy.

    Google Play - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.herogmtools App Store - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hero-system-mobile/id1352750917?ls=1&mt=8 Amazon App Store - http://a.co/byom955
This project is an extension of an export template I wrote a few months ago.  I had so much fun writing that template that I decided to develop a full app.

    Features
Import characters from Hero Designer using this export template Characteristics and Skills may be long pressed and a check will be made Dice rolling tools (3d6, Hit, Damage, and Free Form)  The H.E.R.O. tool generates random 250 point 5e supers (shout out to Cassandra for allowing me to use her original idea) Track statistics about your die rolls, including average values, distribution, total stun etc.
This is still very much a work in progress and I have plans to add more features as time goes on.  For now though I feel that it’s mature enough to release to the general public.

Feedback is always welcome either here or at phil.guinchard@gmail.com

    Happy Hero-ing

The PCs in my modified Champions Universe game have gone to visit Babylon.

After meeting their first Conurbite (the magical pretty people who live in Babylon), and I complete my description of her, I get back "It's Barbie Borg!"

I am now stuck thinking of Conurbites as Ken and Barbie versions of Star Trek's Borg, which is probably not too far off from how they appear from their description in Mystic World.

Babylon did allow me to entertain myself a bit when they bought a stripped-down copy (no weapons) of the Millenium Falcon from a Ferengi. They're now trying to figure out how to get it back to Earth.

The campaign has actually reached a point where I am in the process of thinking how I could expand it in different directions.

You might call the current campaign Phase One, and it will very likely continue on past this summer, perhaps replacing existing characters with new ones as the point levels are starting to grow a bit excessive.

My current plans for Phase Two is either an "Agents Of PRIMUS" campaign and/or a Teen Champions campaign with a New Mutants kind of feel, both set in my revised Champions Universe. There has also recently been some discussion about putting together an expansion team, currently called "Champions West" and to be based in Los Angeles.

Getting back to the current campaign...

There was also more down to Earth trouble for the team going on in the United States, since half of them have Secret ID, and the other two are Public ID types. The leader of the team, who has a Public ID, was asked to appear before the Senate Committee on Superhuman Affairs. Due to the fears and uncertainty in the aftermath of the V'Han War shaking things up, he was ordered by the committee chairman to have his Secret ID teammates reveal their identities to the government. It later turned out that a large contingent of Congress has been replaced by fetches, magical copies of people. This plotline was discovered to be the result of earlier PC actions in dealing with the Shadow Queen from Faerie (one of the Master Villain baddies in the CU). She had been allied with Black Paladin, and the team turned him against her, giving him her kingdom in exchange for his vow to do no more villainy within Millenium City. He has honored that vow, instead using his new Faerie resources to take control of elements of the United States government. This has been another one of the distractions the PCs are currently dealing with, heading off to Faerie to find the kidnapped congressmen and senators.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has extended an offer of worldwide police authority to the team, expanding them out from working in Millenium City to policing the world.

In my last session of my CU campaign, the PCs were in Faerie and entered Dracula’s castle, expecting to meet the Count and slap him around for information on a case they’re working on (all the PCs are 700+ Points). To their surprise, the arch-lich Takofanes was waiting in the throne room when they burst in, with Dracula acting as his right-hand man.

i opened things up with a PRE attack, using Takofane’s bonus PRE from the crown he wears (120 PRE total!). Rolling an 89 (putting everyone on the team in the +40 range), the three supers were immediately overwhelmed with fear (and two ran away in blind terror, leaving the group’s paralyzed with fear supermage to Takofane’s non-existent mercy).

i use that as an example to wonder if anyone imposes limits on PRE in their campaigns, or if a limit should be imposed.

One of the PCs has a 40 PRE, so he’s usually immune to villainous shock and awe of this sort and can be pretty intimidating to VIPER agents and even many supervillains.

It’s been a while since I got a PRE attack this high, so I didn’t remember that the effect lasts for an hour per the chart. That’s pretty potent.

    Guess I should introduce myself.

Let's see... I'm Era, a bit autistic (and thus quiet and shy), love computers, computer games, role playing, programming, and other things.

I learned about Herosystem (5E) back in 2005 when I was in Korea (military), and in 2006-2007 I came here to get into my first 5E fantasy game in Brightwood (and haven't had a chance to play since )

Other than some posts years ago (commenting on powers and mistakes in the books etc) most of those seem to have been either archived or deleted...

So I've more or less not here or paying attention, But... I'd like to be here more now, since video games can't seem to keep my attention quite as easily the last year.

    ---
So I guess there's a few standard questions...
How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)? When I was on ICQ I wanted a way to differentiate myself so I was more searchable. So I decided on Era, then later while doing my paperroute the name Hawkeye came to mind (MASH), now of course I didn't want to steal that so I went to Crow, then Scarecrow.... yeah... not very exciting...

Hi! Been a Champions nut for a very long time (1985, 3rd ed) but been quite inactive over the last decade and a half. Ran a lot of 3rd and 4th ed but skipped over Fuzion (ugh) and 5th ed. Champions Complete has recently fallen into my lap and the old juices are starting to flow again.

How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?
I picked up a nickname as "The Missing Link" at my first proper job. Link is "Rinku" in Japanese which I was always a fan of. Nothing to do with Zelda - but because of Link from Zelda I got into the habit of sticking the "m" for missing in front to make a handle.

What was the first tabletop RPG you played?
      1st Edition Traveller, circa 1980.

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?
      Ditto.

    What are you currently playing/GMing?
Playing 2nd Ed Space:1889 (Ubiquity version) with the old gang via Skype. Prepping to run Champions 6th after we finish that campaign.

Edit: Just added a profile picture. Never played Captain Third in a tabletop game, but he's appeared in City of Heroes, DCUO, Pirates of the Burning Sea and has a miniature (pictured). Probably I should have a picture of Robo-bushi or Dwarfstar who go back to my actual Champions playing days, but Cap started as a wargaming tournament in-joke and the first drawing of him was as a forum profile portrait, so hey.

Sky Marshal--Before Silver Avenger Virgil "The Verge" Jordan was recruited by PRIMUS, he was one of the best pilots in the US Air Force.  For that reason he was selected to field-test the ACAPS (Airborne Combatant Augmentation & Protection System) suit as a possible anti-supervillain weapon.  In his first outing with the suit he took on a squadron of VIPER Air Cavalry attempting to hijack an armored car convoy--and shot down all twelve of them.

While it was eventually deemed that the suit was too expensive for mass production, Jordan was allowed to keep the prototype ACAPS for as long as he was attached to PRIMUS.  As Sky Marshal, he adds a tremendous measure of power and experience to PRIMUS's air combat capabilities, and is hailed by other heroes as a valuable ally to the cause of justice.

From this past weekend's session of my Champions campaign. The team was in Dallas on the day of the JFK assassination. Hexxen, the team's mage from Hong Kong, was born in the 1920s, so he's dealing with his younger self during the scenario.

GM (OOC): I'll let you roleplay both characters. I'll only step in if it seems his psychs aren't being played right. (His younger self is a hothead who doesn't like being told what to do, so there's some friction between the two versions.)
    Hexxen's PC (OOC): OK
GM (OOC): You can start roleplaying with yourself now.

    Stronghold Riot, concluded:

Warden Wildman inexplicably screams and falls to the ground unconscious.  Eventually, Malarkey and Pops figure out Wildman was taken out by a shrinker, Hummingbird, who rummages in Wildman's pocket and pulls out his ID card.  She flies with it to the blast door leading the outside, with Malarkey in fast pursuit.

Malarkey:  Now, lass, I'd hate to pin your wee self to the door with one of my shillelaghs.  Truly I would, but you're not leaving me much choice.
Hummingbird:  Maybe we can make a deal.  I help you, you let me leave.
Malarkey:  I'm listening, lass.  How are you to help us?
Hummingbird:  I can take down Bulldozer for you.
Malarkey:  And how's a wee slip of a girl like you going to do that?
Hummingbird:  Mental blasts.  He's a brick.  Probably not a lot of brain in there.
    Malarkey:  Aye, that's true.

Despite Maker's EMP doing major damage to them, the big guard robots together take her down (into GM-Discretion Land) then move over to her unconscious body.
Circe:  They're not going to blast her again, are they?
    GM:  Nope.
AR-307 #1:  You are under arrest.
AR-307 #2:  You have the right to remain silent.  If you refuse that right...
Circe:  Okay, that's fine.  We can get the cuffs off later.

After doing a Move-Through on Shadowboxer (and a grabbed Ripper), Bulldozer makes his way over to Nexus.

Bulldozer:  Hey, babe.  What say you dump these losers and take off with me? (flexes his muscles)  I'm ten times the man your teammates are.
Nexus:  Um... yeah... that sounds like a good idea...  (OOC)  Inside my head, I'm screaming over the Mind Link, "Good God, nooooooo!"

Honey Badger winds up for a haymaker on Osmium... who just smiles and waits patiently.  When HB swings his fist, Osmium catches it in one hand.

    Honey Badger:  WTF is that?
GM:  It's a Block combined with a Grab.  It's one of the Brick Tricks martial arts maneuvers.
Honey Badger:  Now that's just cheating.

Eventually, Ripper and Bulldozer are taken down, as are the rest of the villains except Osmium.  The GM decides to take things out of combat.

GM:  You know that scene toward the end of Avengers, where Loki comes to and finds the Avengers all standing over him?  That's what it's like for Osmium now.
Osmium:  Fair enough, you caught me. (raises his hands, then nods at Honey Badger)  You're a damn good fighter.  But you gotta admit, that Fist Grab was awesome.
Honey Badger:  (grudgingly) Yeah, that was pretty slick.
Osmium:  When I'm out of jail, I'll buy you a drink.
    Honey Badger:  (smiles)  That's cool.

The heroes help the Stronghold staff round up what supervillains they can, though a fair number managed to escape.  A good number of them got out through a tunnel down around Cellblock Level 5.

GM:  The escapees include Doctor Decapod and Psi-Borg, a few of the members of Vermin, all of the Secession Squad members you captured...
    Malarkey:  All of them?
GM:  Yes.  (pause)  Back when you captured them, someone commented that it seemed awful easy to catch so many of them.  That's because they wanted to go to Stronghold.  If you're looking to recruit supervillains for your cause, a prison full of supervillains is a great place to do that.
Malarkey:  Especially if they're all going to owe you for helping break them out of prison...
GM:  Yep.  And once they had the specs on the field generator to neutralize the Power Negation system, it was just a case of Manassas creating a bunch of them disguised as things that could be smuggled in by a disgruntled or friendly guard.  Distribute them to the villains willing to play ball, and you're good to go.

OK, this requires a little more set-up that the funny one-liners I typically post here, but it was too awesome not to share. This is a low-fantasy FH game set in 11th century Europe.

    Dramatis Personae:

Thyri Torvaldsdottir: PC, Viking shieldmaiden with a mysterious past and serious anger management issues.

Father Edmondo: PC, Priest of Rome, the "face man." Edmondo and Thyri have an odd codependent relationship that includes an unspecified level of intimacy. (Hey, it's the 11th Century; celibacy for priests was encouraged, but not mandatory.)

Geralt Mac Uaid: PC, Irish warrior, also a chirurgeon (medic).

Jarl Calder: NPC, Thyri's nemesis. 5 years ago Calder raped and killed Thyri's mother, had her entire family declared outlaws, seized their lands, and oh yeah enslaved Thyri and tortured her for years before selling her into a pit fighting ring. (The other PCs don't know this part of her backstory.)

Hjortur Larsson: NPC, respected elder and neutral arbiter.

Our Heroes have returned to Thyri's native Sweden, where of course they run into Calder. Thyri goes Berserk and attacks Calder; after a lengthy fight, Thyri succeeds in beating the shit out of him, but Edmondo convinces her not to kill him.

Afterwards, Elder Larsson appoints himself as judge to hear their dispute and decide if Thyri should be punished for assaulting a Jarl and generally being an outlaw, or if her charges against Calder are justified. Thyri tells her emotional story, the first time the other PCs/players have heard any of it. Calder of course tells a completely different story, and several of his men are willing to back up his version of events. Edmondo on cross-examination is able to poke a few holes in their story, but nothing conclusive. And since she's been declared an Outlaw, she doesn't have the right of trial by combat so the fact that she already defeated him isn't considered conclusive. So it's basically He They Said, She Said, which of course is likely to go down in favor of the noble.

Geralt: [grasping at straws] "If he enslaved and tortured you for that long, do you maybe have any scars that can substantiate your story?"

Edmondo: [sudden realization] "Oh, is that what that's from?"

    Thyri says nothing.

Edmondo walks over to Thyri and reaches towards her. Thyri shoots him a Back Off look. Edmondo returns a Trust Me look. Thyri, suddenly looking vulnerable for the first time since they've known her, nods.

Edmondo pulls Thyri's hair aside revealing the scar on the back of her neck that she always keeps hidden - where Calder had branded his initials into her with a hot knife.

    Calder: "Uh..." [blank stare]

Elder Larsson: "...Well that seems pretty conclusive to me."

And Larsson rules in favor of Thyri. (Sentence TBD.)

I love it when minor bits of character backstory written months before, and which the GM had honestly forgotten about, become a big dramatic reveal and wind up being crucial to the plot!

Durzan Malakim reacted to Killer Shrike in Building a Light spell is harder than I thought
I'm still attached to the Earth, via the bonds of gravity as well as a certain sentimental fondness for the planet where I still keep all my stuff. I just moved away from the Hero System after the last Here There Be Monsters campaign I ran (which is all 6th edition), and roleplaying in general. This is due mostly to changing life circumstances (kids, job, other hobbies, a sort of pervasive lack of available free time), as well as a shift in appreciation towards more narrative games. I also drifted away from posting on these forums as I was doing increasingly less Hero System related gaming but also because many of the people I enjoyed collaborating or trading posts with also drifted away, though some remain.

Also these forums have themselves experienced some vicissitudes over the years and there were times when I would have posted but the site was experiencing difficulties or I could no longer find some old post I wanted to reference and had no desire to rehash old ideas all over again without aid of just referring back to a thread that already covered the same ground. And of course, after the couple hundreth thread on how to model a vancian magic system or quibbling over how to do magic missile or light or whatever, my attention wanders. There is some kind of existential limit on how many times a person can cover the same intellectual ground and remain interested in it; some ideas in this domain have been so often re-tread over the years that I just no longer am inspired to spend energy or time on treading that same ground once more. Jadedness, ennui, operational fatigue, "been there, done that, figured it out, moved beyond it"; call it what you will...I just don't have anything new to say on the subject and don't care to keep repeating myself.

I still love the Hero System in general, and I spent more years playing it than any other game system if measured pound for pound, ounce per ounce of games run and time spent...over two decades of time of actively using the rules for a wide variety of genres and campaigns and occasional one offs.

As far as 6e vs 5e, the differences in the editions is not very large for the most part. In the large majority of cases taking a 5e effect and simply re-expressing it in 6e terms is simple, and in many cases results in a more or less identical write up. Occasionally there is a more effective 6e way to approach a problem, but the 5e way is still a viable one; after all the Hero System is the way of many ways to model the same idea. The situations where a 5e approach is no longer viable at all and an entirely new 6e way of approaching the problem is required are pretty seldom, but generally easy to navigate when encountered. Pretending that 5e material is irrelevant to the current mores of the system or of no value when looking for ideas that are re-usable or mine-able for a 6e game isn't really warranted, in my opinion.

As to the content contributed by others, I don't generally editorialize that material unless invited to. The material presented is intended to be used or not as people see fit; though no one has ever accused me of having insufficient ego, I don't take the position that my material or opinions on how things might be done is more important than that of other Hero System aficionados. Rather I post people's material when asked to as a service to the community. I wouldn't post contributions that I were offended by, or were disinterested in, or that were of low overall quality, or if it would just take me too much time to get it into a format friendly to the site (such as content in the form of word docs). Otherwise if someone has a body of work they want to share and they want to use my site as the platform from which to do it, and it doesn't take more time than I have to give to it, I post it for them.

If you or others disagree with a given contributor's material, you are welcome to take it up with them; if they take your feedback to heart and submitted altered versions of their material I would do my best to get their contributions updated and pushed out to the site in a timely fashion.

As to eepjr24 specifically, he did a lot of work for the betterment of the site by going through the thousands of hero game effects that were corrupted when my site got hacked by a malicious injection attack some years ago that forced me to purge all of the effect names and notes. This took weeks of labor on his part, and was an amazingly generous thing for him to spend his time on. I did mildly edit some of his material such as his Soldier package to provide an example of a different way to lay out abilities and to offer more configurable options to allow broader re-use, and the magic system write up of his Warlock system (embedded in the package) to tune it up a bit, but by and large I posted it exactly as he submitted it without editorial interference. In all our dealings, eepjr24 struck me as a very reasonable and well-meaning person eager to use the Hero System and still in the honeymoon phase of his enjoyment with the game. Perhaps if you sought him out with constructive criticism, a useful collaboration or positive feedback loop could be established between you, and it is not inconceivable that he might submit updates or new content more to your liking.

You are also welcome to provide me with your own versions of things that you feel are more correct or relevant and if we come to an accord I will add your stuff to the site as time allows.

Hi. New to the forum, brought in by the MHI game. In all my years of gaming none of the groups I have been associated with have even been remotely interested in the Hero system, so the rule set is totally foreign to me. Hoping to find out more before committing to the game.

    But in the meantime, introductions.

How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?
    - 1upus because Lupus was taken. And no, I do not suffer from lupus. Latin for wolf

What was the first tabletop RPG you played?
    - first ever RPG was D&D, basic box, which I'm sure dates me

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?
    - in the 1980s, way before Star Wars d20, my gaming group of the day reskinned AD&D into a Star Wars RPG set around the classic trilogy. A long time ago before the prequels were even imagined by fanboys.

    What are you currently playing/GMing?
    - haven't GM'd for a long time due to a lack of preparation time.Current gaming revolves around John Wick's Blood & Honor. Relatively rule light and I live the collaborative fiction feel if the way the game runs.

Additional note: What brought you to the Hero System?
    - as mentioned, I am a huge fan of MHI and only discovered recently there was an official RPG. Here to find out more.
I'm also a big fan of the GrimNoir stories amd am considering reskinning Champions to create a Grim Noir game.

Hello, my name is Trentin and it's been WAY too long since I've played Hero...

    :-D

I played the heck out of 5er, been a fan for a long time. Revisiting the 6th edition and really liking what I'm seeing. I'm hoping to create some digital tools for the game, and some adventure frameworks for "pick up and play". First I need to immerse myself in the game again and start GMing it. Looking forward to more discussions with the fans!

Durzan Malakim reacted to Susano in Welcome to Hero Forum - Please Introduce yourself (especially Lurkers)
How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)? "Susano" was my first email address (susano@digex.com) and I've used Susano ever since. Susano was selected since I was a huge fan of the manga Orion, and my friend who created the account used the name of one of the main characters for my handle. I've used "Susano" for my net handle ever since.
What was the first tabletop RPG you played? Basic Dungeons and Dragons (i.e. the original blue book)
What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed? Advanced Dungeons and Dragons
What are you currently playing/GMing? Friday Group - Dungeons and Dragons 5E
Saturday Group - Shadows Angelus (HERO System 6E)
Sunday Group - The Well of the Worlds (HERO System 6E)

I am playing in Friday and Saturday and am GMing Sunday.
