  1. Re: Is the Fantasy Hero book still in print? I don't know how badly you want it but there is a copy at a store in Shreveport LA called Excalibur Comics, Cards and Games. I was there last week and he had a copy on his shelf. I am sure you could Google it and get the Phone number and see if he would be willing to ship...
  2. Re: The Hero Forum's Hottest Woman in Comics. I definetly have to go with the White Queen, Emma Frost.... I would just be afraid she is frigid
  3. Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? Angels and Airwaves - We Don't Need to Whisper
  4. Re: WWYCD: the times of peace are upon us Scarab: Keep on rocking and work on endorsement deals.
  5. Re: Your occupation, please. My favorite character was a guy named Scarab. He was a Goth Musician recovering from a Heroine Addiction.... he was also a brick with an 80 STR.... he was pretty nasty. Occult based artifact empregneated itself in his body and gave him his powers.
  6. Re: Post Apoc Setting Very good read and a nice take on the genre. I agree that the other major players need to be discussed as well as what they have found out through their foraging over the 10 years they have been building. IE other survivors, how the flora/fauna fared in the aftermath etc... I am assuming it had not effect on the ocean life since there is mention of fish. The main idea I have trouble following is that all land masses were affected, especially from a meteor. It seems like there would be hot spots and zones that were not affected at all.... of course there maybe and you have not got to that part yet So far very good... rep for you sir!
  7. I think one of my favorite settings in a long time has been the Midnight setting from FFG. I have actually thought about trying to do a conversion of this setting now that I actually have some time, but I am not sure I am up to the task for I am but a Hero Padawan..... Has anyone attempted a conversion or seen one? (I was actually working on something very similar for about 2 years before this came out.... just goes to show, early bird decapitates and then devours the worm...) Also for those of you that may be interested I found this while being bored.... Midnight Chronicles I am sure it is old news but due to life interfering (I say we stage a revolution and quit our day jobs) I have not really kept up with, well anything game related...
  8. Re: Kudos to Killer Shrike I agree I usually stalk... err.... lurk in the forums and have found all kinds of cool information on Killer Shrikes HP... no to mention Edsel and Eosin have some info on there (Omega Team) that is worth looking at if your doing Dark Champions!!
  9. Re: DM of the Rings I can't see them no matter what browser... how sad..
  10. Re: [Campaign] The Last Dominion Well at least you are still having fun. Sounds like the group is really come together!! Hopefully some day we exiles may be able to rejoin the "Normals" for a guest appearance or two!!!
  11. I am sure there is one out there but I have not seen it. Is there a Timeline for the Hero Universe that lays out when events happen in the Heroverse? For Example: Turakian Age 0-1000 PSL Valdorian Age 1001-1911 PSL... I was reading in the Valdorian age about one of the Islands (can't recall the name) and it made a reference to it being occupied by Cthulu type creatures during the Turakian Age.
  12. Well I was pretty excited. I finally got a copy of the Valdorian Age and had some time to sit down and start reading it last night... Typically I try not to be critical of other people's work, especially since I have not been published, but I had to put down the book after the first 40 pages just because of all the corny names and the B-Movie fantasy gangs. I could not believe that I read that there is a gang in Lowtown that wears panties in their belts to associate them with their gang.... I can put up with a lot of idiosyncrasy but that about killed me.... I have read a boat load of bad campy fantasy in my life but this was just too much especially for a high end product from HERO games. While I am sure the rules information is great the game background information has been really hard to plug through. Now I am not saying that everything is bad there are some good nuggets in it and I have thought of a couple of plot lines that could be done nicely within the city, it is just that for a grim and gritty campaign world there seems to be a lot of campiness. Of course I could be wrong, maybe they were going for the over the top pulp fantasy feel but I didn't think that was what they were trying to do. Oh well just a rant from a fan that was probably too pumped up about a product that he had to high an expectation. I am sure I will go home tonignht and pick it up again and start reading, I will jsut make sure I have had a scotch or two first:drink: However having said this how does everyone else see it?
  13. Re: I need a name for a Robin Hood-like fantasy character Finn McCool... Not really a fox but it is a great name
  14. Re: Magic: The Gathering to Fantasy Hero Not positive which book, but I know I saw a Web spell somewhere.... Most of the spells used in M:tG are pretty much just common spells stolen straight from D&D with a little different flair added. I am sure you could find those pretty easily and then just re-name them for your game.
  15. Re: Help save a campaign I am no expert but just by reading the character descriptions I am wondering how these folks all managed to get together? Or more importantly why they stay together? I have noticed a trend in gaming, one of which I must say I fell in to as well with my last character, where everyone wants to be a brooding loner. The problem with that is loners do not work well in groups. They have completely opposite goals to a "Team Oriented" campaign and in reality would probably never stick around after there need had been met. As far as how to save it I really like what nevereverend had to say. You really need to make some of the key points that they missed come back to haunt them. Take something that was mentioned in passing and use that to do something radical. For example take something like "The King is dealing harshly with those who do not pay the proper taxes on their estates." which is something that they may have overheard or spoken directly to the characters. Suddenly Feng gets a report that the Kings troops have seized his lands and he has been stripped of his title. When he protests he finds that one of the tax collectors working in his area has been dipping in to the tax funds so his share of taxes were not actually paid. You can spin this in several directions, was it just that the tax collector was greedy? Was he bribed by another noble who wanted Feng's land? Was he set up by the gladiators guild to try to coax him back to the ring to make money for them? The key is to punish the players to an extent to get them to start paying more attention to the story, otherwise it will just wind up as a hackfest which is something I am sure you do not want. As for the Ranger who wanders off... well if I were in your situation I would probably put them in an unwinnable situation and let the chips fall as they may. Though it wasn't intended (we had a character roll back to back 20's when he was scouting.. back when we still played d20) a prominent fighter in the party was exploring a sewer after he had been baited in to it. He stumbled on this room that was basically the throne room for a local vampire lord/sorcerer..... he fought bravely for a little while but eventually was overcome and never heard from again.. It really pissed the player off but it also proved a point. The fantasy world is a dangerous place and there is ALWAYS someone bigger and badder than you.. As for your story it sounds like it is pretty cool, I just think that you need to reign the players in some. Good luck and keep us posted as to how it all shakes out!
  16. Re: Must see site !!! WT Frak, who is this clown?
  17. Re: Villains of the Cult For as powerful as your villians are they seem awfully slow. While the Bone Golem would pose a threat just becasue of his abilities the priest would be chewed up rather quickly in the campaigns I have played in. In the last FH game our averag speed was 3-4 for 150 point characters. Couple that with a High Dex and they wouldn't even get their first attack off before they were down... well, not the golem... Also you shold add some special FX descriptions to the powers for teh golem. I would be interested to see what the Dance of the Clematis is. Other than that They look good.
  18. Re: Fantasy Hero combat slower? I think the only time the game drags on is when VPP's are in play. It just gives you too many choices to make. We kept our games simple by using MPP's (Except one character..) and it speeded up the combat quite a bit. The problem that almost always seemed to slow the game I was in was tactics. People try to overanalyze things many times and then a combat that is supposed to take place in less than one minute takes an hour to resolve. Luckily I had a great group to game with but even then we got bogged down at times worrying about tactics... In actual playing though it always seemed that fantasy combat flowed better. Maybe it was just the GM's style or that your powers are so limited (swords, bow's etc) that it took less time to resolve.
  19. Has anyone had any luck getting 5er rebound? I dropped mine the other day and the back binding completely split I have seen some other RPG books spiral bound at Kinkos but I didn't know if it was too thick....
  20. Re: FH Campaign So what was the game choice? Are you gonna go with Supers?? It may be fun to have a bit of a change of pace. Our group will do that occasionally just to do something different. As for campaign lengths I have preferred teh longer campaigns for the character development. It seems that you usually quit right as your characters are getting really good and have enough EP to really flesh them out....
  21. Re: Campaign: The Turakian Age Okay, I burned all afternoon at work reading the thread... First of all great work, when my Fax rang while reading the Undead battle with the amulet I actually jumped... Thanks for the hard work to keep us all updated!
  22. Re: Archaeology skills I have heard of Civil Engineers on job sites as well. Usually they are the very large jobs with a lot of excavation and dirt work involved. So I guess Contact Civil Engineer would be good. Typical field sites do have a lot of staff. Unless you are doing deep excavation though you would not worry to much about shoring and slopes. However you do make a good point.
  23. Re: Archaeology skills KS: Field Survey KS: Field Excavation KS: Pottery/Artifacts of Specific Culture and period that they are studying. KS: Dating techniques (Flurocarbon, tree ring, Carbon etc...) you can probably lump these as a general skill. The more intensive dating techniques are done in a laboratory and while you will know about the throry and practice behind them they would not do you any good in the field. However you may want to take carbon dating alone since it would allow the character the ability to test his own materials. KS: Funereary Practices KS: Mythology/Religion KS: Anthropology Especially since Archaeology is a subfield. KS: Linguistics KS: Forensic Anthropology KS: History (specifically time period and culture that you are studying) KS: Art History KS: Archaeology of course... KS: Cartography KS: Geology KS: Research KS: Statistics... yeah statistics... how else you gonna analyze the data... KS: Customs Especially of the culture you are studying.. KS: Diplomacy/Law What permit?? I thought it was okay to dig up these ancient and sacred ruins.... KS: Technical Writing Then depending on the specific culture that you are studying you may want to know about lithics, military history then there are some good general skills to have like deductive reasoning, survival as mentioned earlier, hand to hand combat since most countries don't allow firearms and you may need to be able to defend yourself. This list is by no means comprehensive... A lot of this comes from the courses that I took while getting my undergrad degree.. of course that doesn't cover the other things like Biological Anthropology, Medical Anthropology, Epidemiology..... As for the languages 12 sounds like an awful lot.. unless of course your doing a pulp era hero. All of the professional Archaelolgists I know only know two or three languages. Of course it also depends on the area that the character is specializing in. If it is in an area where there are a lot of different cultures then it may make sense but most people studying say the ancient Aztecs would have no use for knowing Japanese, German etc... For that you would of course want English, Spanish, KS: Aztec Alphabet or something to that effect. Crater Maker also had some good suggestions about contacts. It is a very tight knit community and many of them are familiar with each other even if they don't study the same areas. I am not sure about the structural engineering but Architecture would be another good one to know. Of course if you know how a building is built it may be able to help you understand the mechanics but you would not really need to know the property of the materials and loads etc.... Just some food for thought.
