    The 25 June...perhaps.
But not yesterday and today.  They DO make sense.  Case numbers started to rise just after the solstice...and now the death counts are rising.  Over 750 today with a few hours left.  And it's gone up by 6 in just a few minutes while I was looking at some different things...

At this point you can't look at the longer-term trendline for daily deaths;  it's now meaningless, with the massive upswing in cases.  It would be interesting and possibly informative to take the daily case counts and daily death counts, do some normalization on both (say, divide daily cases by 60,000, daily deaths by 2000, so they'd be on similar scales) then offset the daily deaths by 2 weeks, and perhaps another offset by 3 weeks, and see how well they overlap.

Does that mean someone can challenge him to single combat for the Presidency?  Cool.

The local government had been permitting the protest on I5, and providing police closures of the road for the protestors. IMO, tragedy could have been avoided if they just enforced the law about staying off the highway on foot in the first place. I haven't read a follow up for the last couple of days, but the radio news on the way in to work last Sunday said that this guy was the same one who ran the police barricades a week prior and almost hit protestors. Even if it turns out this was a different guy, it's a damned shame the local government had to wait for deaths to shut this down the same way they waited for several deaths to shut down the CHAZ/CHOP. I'm pretty disgusted at how the local government has been handling a lot of aspects of these protests.

I don't know if this is more than a conspiracy theory but Breonna Taylor's family has hired a lawyer to sue Louisville for her death. One of the contentions filed is the police weren't there to execute a drug search warrant. They were there to move Taylor and her boyfriend out of their place so it could be gentrified, and the mayor's office knew it at the time of her shooting.

This, I feel, is one of the most legitimate complaints against police.  When they find a bad apple in their midst the blue wall goes up and nobody will admit anyone did anything wrong.  Going so far as to throw away fellow officers who break rank and point out the bad actors in the bunch.

This is absurd.  Gandalf970 asked a very straight-forward question with a very straight-forward answer and nobody's managed to even touch on it.

All that's needed to disrupt casting is to land an attack that's not totally negated by defenses.  A single point of STUN or other such effect is enough to cancel the entire spell.
The procedure thus becomes holding one's action until the caster casts, winning the DEX vs DEX roll to act first when the caster casts, hitting, and dealing any damage.  This negates the spell, with nothing the caster can do at this point.

6E's Fantasy Hero contains text on page 165 that indicates Gestures and Incantations begin at the start of the Segment, and thus holding until the caster's DEX and the DEX vs DEX roll are unnecessary, making the process even easier.  Just go first on that Segment and hit them.

I'm going to drop this in here, not as a denial of any issues surrounding police misconduct, but because I found it a pretty typical example of the many interactions I've seen of SPD with people, including subjects. Most of our local LE are pretty decent folks.

It's a weird story.  Black guy in car hits two white ladies at Black Lives Matter rally.  My gut instinct on this is that he's not a white supremacist.

People should not intentionally run over other people with their cars.  People should also be aware that protesting in the middle of the highway carries very real danger of accident.  It's also not crazy to think drivers might become seriously afraid when their car gets surrounded by protesters.  Even if a demonstration has been peaceful, the driver who finds himself surrounded doesn't necessarily know that (or know that it will stay peaceful).

I once represented a client who ran over a repo man with his car.  I got the case dismissed when I got the repo man to admit that he intentionally stood in front of my client's car to block him in.  The guy thought he was so smart.  "Yeah I wanted to make sure he couldn't leave."  The judge knew where I was going with it though -- the guy's actions technically fell under the definition of felony Kidnapping (any person who, without lawful authority, causes another person to be confined or imprisoned against their will).  It's a technical argument, but I've had clients charged with kidnapping for less than that.  My client was simply using necessary force to prevent himself from being kidnapped.  The DA gave in and dismissed the charge, and then the judge called repo man back into the courtroom after the hearing was over and chewed his ass out for like 10 minutes.

The world really needs more cold-blooded economic thinking. Because from such a perspective, a chance to acquire a few million hardworking, educated and business-savvy Hong Kongers is an opportunity only a fool would pass up.

That is a counsel of despair Badger, and not likely to get something better in 2024.  If folk don't like either option and wait for something better, nothing is likely to turn up.  If people counsel despair, nothing is likely to change.

Democracy, like a vegetable garden, takes work to make it flourish.  Voting at every election is like seeding the plot and ignoring it until harvest time.  It is unlikely you will go back and find any tomatoes, potatoes or carrots, just a bunch of nettles and weeds.

We have gotten lazy, expecting the system to throw up good, principled candidates when experience is telling them that is not the way to get elected.

What is needed is not new systems or rules but a deeper engagement by the electorate.  of course, it might take a new system to garner that engagement.

We get the politicians we deserve.

I'm not terribly surprised that the Trumpier states are experiencing a more dramatic rise now -- they're more likely to have taken his nonsense directions seriously. That the Clintonish states started out with such a higher incidence does surprise me, though. It would be interesting to determine if more than coincidence was involved, and if so, what the factors were.

They govern by proxy.  They don't need to be the mayor, police chief, etc. when those people are in their back pocket, or controlled by them in some manner.

When I had my knee issue, the pain kept me awake also until i developed a routine.. Tough it out during the day to buiild up some tolerance and take your pain meds about an hour before bedtime so, they're just kicking in as you fall asleep. They'll stay in your system longer and you may be able to get a full night in.

If, as a store  owner, you REALLY want to stimulate mask wearing, try this:

"5%* discount for any shopper or shopping group) wearing a mask throughout their shopping trip in our store"

    * Pick your percentage.

More cynically (or realistically - businesses are already suffering)?  Raise your prices the same amount so those without masks are paying a premium.

    Shoulder Update:
It's 5:30 AM and I'm up.  Sleep so far - zero.
Yesterday I couldn't sleep until about 6:30 and then the jackass next door started mowing at 7:00AM.  Popped extra tramadol and slept like Captain America until 4 in the afternoon.

It's moving a lot better during the day with minimal soreness, it hurts just enough to keep me from sleeping.

Also, down 22 pounds in one month.  Meds have obliterated my sense of hunger.  I'm just putting food in my face so I don't pass out or something.
Granted I could use another 2 months like this so this isn't so bad.  Ok, take 2 on sleepy time.  Hope I don't see you guys for like 1/2 a day.

I had the same reaction and my thought was that every cop that dies during one of these things deserves it and every civilian who kills a cop during what seems to be a home invasion deserves a medal of valor.

How can a no-knock warrant be executed by plains clothes cops be perceived as anything else by civilians?  This is straight up evil by police.

Surround the structure, knock and announce yourselves as police, bring a warrant and act like actual law enforcement.

That actually is the usual evolution of pathogens, to become less lethal, so the infected people live longer and pass it on to more new hosts.  I don't think we know enough about the disease to do more than guess about that at this time.
