My American friends, may you find some comfort in seeing that the arrogance, ignorance, and spitefulness of the modern right-winger extends far beyond your borders. :(

I'm generally... well, not comforted but at least feel a bit less collectively stupid when I see similar things in other countries.  But not Canada.  I look at our friendly neighbors to the north like a little, smarter brother who learns from big brother's occasional idiotic mistakes and is better for it.

Asteroid Launcher, an online app for planning I mean modeling potential asteroid impacts.  Purely hypothetically I'm sure.

So, is it possible there are alternate universes where all of the "Launch Asteroid" results actually happen?  In other words, did I just create a bunch of extinction-level events on alternate Earths?  (Still, it felt good to nuke Columbus, OH.)

    2) On the other hand, if the Democrats wanted to eventually stop the Republican sideshow for some reason (like raising the debt ceiling this summer to save the government from default), it'd be interesting for them to do a "Draft Liz Cheney" thing.

As speaker, she wouldn't be onboard with endless meaningless investigations of pretend "crimes" nor would she be onboard with any "Impeach Biden" movement for no crime at all.

She'd be spending all her time trying to keep the Republican crazies in line and likely not have any time left over to promote a real Republican agenda of any sort (whether Trumpism or a more conventional Republicanism). And at worst, if she did manage to reign in their crazies and prevent them from recruiting more crazies to run for office in the 2024 election cycle, that'd only be good for the country in the long run.

If the Democrats block voted for Cheney, they'd only need a couple of disgruntled Republicans to cross over and vote with them.

It'd tie the Republican caucus in knots for the next two years while providing, perhaps, the chance for a couple of pieces of bipartisan legislation to pass like raising the debt ceiling (or getting rid of the whole concept of "a debt ceiling" altogether).

Part of me (okay, mainly the contrarian part) would really like to see the Democrats nominate and vote for her, if for no other reason than to watch all the MAGAT heads explode.  Think they could get a half dozen or so Republicans to vote for her?

We have spent two years trying to keep Covid out of the house to protect our frail and now bedridden mother. Vaccination, boosters, masking whenever we leave the house. Yesterday, my brother tested positive, with a second test for confirmation. We are now trying to keep my brother as far from our mother as possible, as much as possible, but we can't afford to, like, send him to a hotel for a week. I am terrified.

CORRECTION: I just thought of a way to get him out of the house for a week that's in our budget. I hope he agrees, and it's not too late to prevent contagion.

    Dean Shomshak

C'mon, Dean, getting him arrested isn't a very nice solution.  (just kidding)  I hope all works out okay for your family and especially your mother.  Wishing you best of luck.

  7. Given that (at least in my opinion) the GOP House members had no intention of actually doing their jobs, but instead just being obstructionist / perpetually try to impeach Biden / posture and pontificate without legislating... I'm not sure them being tied up indefinitely just trying to elect a Speaker of the House is all that much worse, or even all that different.

The villain known as Tick Tock is a master gadgeteer, who has a legion of tiny wind-up robots to help him with his crimes - though a handful of them are dedicated to recording every utterance of their master and broadcasting it online.  (He also has a bit of a crush on Pretty as a Picture! and often dedicates a minion robot or two to record her as well.)

Hubby picked up the Sentinels of the Multiverse card game that we're gonna crack open on Christmas Eve to play

That's a great game.  My daughter and son-in-law got me that a few Christmases back and we've had a blast playing it, both at home as well as at GenCon the last two years.  I have a pretty complete collection now (including most of the variant cards).

To me, it's a foregone conclusion that the Republican Party, with its various factions, will eventually cannibalize itself. Could this be the beginning?

Marjorie Taylor Greene And Lauren Boebert Get Personal In Very Public Spat

I mean, could this actually be the beginning? Please?

I dunno if we can say that, just on these two having a spat.  I mean, they're Bart Simpson and Bud Bundy, so it's rather hard to take them as representatives of the Republican Party.

I would say that sounds exactly like representatives of today's Republican Party.

I'd say that's insulting to Bart Simpson and Bud Bundy.  Each of them has way more intelligence than Greene and Boebert combined (not that that's saying much), and a lot more sense than a vast majority of today's GOP.
