  1. Re: Real Locations that should be fantasy Very very cool. The living bridges were amazing. Make sure you follow the link to the Hobbit House at the end of the article (http://www.darkroastedblend.com/2007/10/environmentally-friendly-houses.html). Good find. Repped.
  2. Re: "Dark Flow" Discovered at Edge of the Universe Wow. The things we don't know just seem to continue to grow. Something like this that can turn everything we think we know about the universe on its head; that's pretty cool.
  3. Re: Real Locations that should be fantasy That series is on the History channel, Cities of the Underworld: http://www.history.com/cities-of-the-underworld Cool stuff there.
  4. Re: I killed a PC. Nice. Repped.
  5. Re: Japan Plans Solar Space Powerplant to Beam Power to Earth The proposed Japanese plant will be a 1 GW generator, which, according to the article, is enough to cover 229,000 Tokyo homes. The 150,000 homes is from a different article for Solaren, Inc. The math doesn't add up - the Solaren plan is 200 MW, which they claim is the estimated average usage of 150,000 homes (American homes). So for 5x the powerplant only 1.5x as many homes would be served? Tokyo must use a lot of power. My math is rusty, but if it's a 1 GW plant, using the $2.1B that ajackson supposed (which, by the way, is $240,000 per hour, not $24,000), this would be $0.24/kWh. That's about what Hawaii paid for power in 2007 (http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/electricity/esr/table5.html). But all of this is moot - what's important is this, like the Solaren plan, is an actual plan to beam power from space! That has geeky sci-fi coolness written all over it, and it might actually be done in my lifetime.
  6. Japan is planning a $21 Billion dollar solar power in space plant to beam power to earth: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601101&sid=aJ529lsdk9HI
  7. Re: Making a master Table Booklet I did much the same thing back in 4th edition at Kinkos with photocopiers, scissors, and glue sticks. Liberal use of the reducing feature on the copiers and I was able to produce a two-page sheet with just about every relevant chart on it.. Laminated it and it was my main play aide. Production value would be much higher today with the publishing tools available.
  8. Re: 5ER - specific throwing damage situation Yeah, I think I'm seeing what the maneuver is all about now - it's the classic use your opponent's energy against him.
  9. Re: 5ER - specific throwing damage situation That's what makes the most sense. So Martial Throw adds 20% to the number of dice, and in 5ER you can also trade damage dice for distance.
  10. Re: 5ER - specific throwing damage situation There's less description in 6E for this maneuver - nothing about trading dice for distance. I'm a little stuck on the v/5 bonus damage - is it the velocity of the throw or the velocity the character had before the throw? This sounds like a good question for Steve in the rules questions forum: http://www.herogames.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=3
  11. Re: 5ER - specific throwing damage situation Martial Throw is a little bit different. I didn't see in your OP that it was a Martial Throw, and now that I'm looking at the rules I can see where some parts of your question came from. Per 5ER p 400, using a Martial Throw "Characters can increase the distance they Throw a victim by subtracting damage from the Throw, - every -1d6 of damage adds +1" to the Throw." Plus you add in velocity damage at +1d6 per v/5 that the target had, so if they're already moving they take more damage. Personally, I don't see the physics in reducing damage to increase range - if you're going to throw something farther it's going to take more force to get them there. I'd be curious to see how others adjudicate this.
  12. Re: 5ER - specific throwing damage situation Per 5ER p35, extra strength would be 50 (close enough, I'm rounding the 105kg to 100kg), so the distance would be 20". Damage is the STR damage (5ER p36), so 12D6. This assumes it's a standing throw. If you're picky on the 105kg then you could use 49 extra STR, so you'd be looking at 19". Damage is the same either way.
  13. Re: Power Discussion: Barrier :rofl:ROFLMAO! Good think I wasn't drinking anything when I read that, I hate having to clean off the monitor after I spit something through my nose on it.
  14. Re: Fortune favours the brave It's the same as 5ER as far as I can see.
  15. Some beautiful photographs that could be useful for any Star Hero campaign (warning - this page is pretty big; there are approximately 80 photos on it): http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/07/24/stunning-space-photography/ Quite a few of these are ones I had not seen before. The universe is a beautiful place.
  16. Re: 6th Edition Hero System Megabundle for $80 That's a great deal - SOLD!
  17. Re: 6th Edition Hero System Here's a link to the 6th edition stuff that I've found: https://www.herogames.com/browse.htm?keywords=6th&categoryID=220000&releaseDate=-1&available=Y&book=Y&pdf=Y&characterPack=Y&multiBook=Y&other=Y&damaged=Y As Steve posted earlier, bundles and whatnot are still coming. Artwork for the items is not posted yet, so it makes it harder to find them. Putting in "6th" for a search term seems to help. I'm waiting for the bundles
  18. Re: Fantasy Art Thread Clowns are already scary. Gigglepuss just doesn't try to hide his evil intent like most clowns. Good stuff
  19. Re: 6E Rules changes confirmed so far Paizo was the publisher for Dragon magazine before WOTC pulled the plug on it. They are also a distributor for a lot of gaming content for various systems. When 4E came along, they decided to stick with the 3.5 OGL rule base and produced their own game and world based on it; Pathfinder is the result of that. Since it's not WOTC, it's not technically D&D 3.6, but it's in that vein of thought. I remember looking at the beta of the rule set, which I believe is still publicly available, and thinking that it wasn't bad. There are a number of people who are not happy with 4E and have refused to move to the new system. The OGL doesn't apply to 4E, and the licenses for 4E are much more restrictive, so it seems unlikely that there will be as much 3rd party contributions for 4E as there were for 3.0/3.5. More information is available here: http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG They used to stock a lot of PDF content from previous editions of the game, but looking today I can't find that on their site... I wonder if WOTC pulled the plug on that. That's unfortunate, as there were some good prices available on some of the older content.
  20. Re: 6th Edition Hero System Must... resist... temptation... wait for bundle... don't click yet...
  21. Re: Cost of new books According to Lemming:
  22. Re: Cost of new books Will there be a package deal for buying both books and PDFs together?
  23. Re: [uF] It's the end of the world as we know it... That looks pretty sweet.
  24. Re: Fortune favours the brave I like the structure of the faith build as well. But with Luck... I like it loose. One concern I would have with the more structured approach suggested is that it gives too much control to the player, and that makes it look a lot less like luck. Sure, there's luck on the die roll, but getting to choose what the effect is... that just doesn't feel like luck from a roleplaying standpoint. Maybe it's just me - I like the GM having more control over the specific outcome. Granted, the current RAW for Luck are different from any other HERO mechanic - maybe there's a way to come up with a more internally consistent mechanic, but I'd rather see the GM ultimately in control over what specifically happens.
