Alphabet Game 2021

Well, you could fudge a bit...urchin roe.  AFAIK, "sea" is kinda redundant....  Of course, unless you followed Iron Chef Japan religiously, you probably never heard of it....

V...vanilla *anything*, long as it's using the real stuff.  It's one of the amusing twists of language.  "Vanilla" means boring and plain and basic, whereas true vanilla is one of the most exotic, rich, and complex spices.

OK, I'll cheat.  But MAN!!!! This looks YUMMY!

Desserts that start with X - Xuixo Pastry

Xuixo is a viennoiserie pastry from the Spain. It is a deep-fried, sugar-coated cylindrical pastry filled with cream.

In Catalonia, Spain, bakers put crema catalana (Spanish crème brûlée) in dough that looks like a croissant, deep fry it, and sprinkle sugar on it.

It’s kind of like a cross between a churro croissant croissant, but it’s filled with cream.

And since I'm just that way...crema catalana ingredients...also YUMMM.....

Hm, I know where to get those data, but the names of them aren't going to span the alphabet well.

The relevant figure is kepler_radtemp.png

So yeah, go to https://exoplanetarchive.ipac.caltech.edu which is the database of record.  There are some standard plots like the above updated more or less daily.

You can query the database.  Start by clicking "Data" in the narrow medium-blue band near the top.

That will take you to a page of lists under various headings.  Click the very first one: under the heading "Confirmed planets" click "Planetary systems".

This takes you to the database query response form, which is formidable as all get out, very wide and very long.  Near the top is a row of headings, and near the bottom of the headings row in each column is a text entry box.

Scroll sideways a little bit; I think the 14th column in the table is "Planet Radius (Earth Radius)".  In the textbox near the head of that column type in "between 0.5 and 3"  (This will select planets with known radii that are between 0.5 Earth radius and 3 Earth radius.  FWIW, very few exoplanets smaller than Earth are known.)  It will update the data in the table as soon as you finish entering that criterion.

7 or so columns to the right of that is one labeled "Equilibrium temperature (K)".  This is the hypothetical average temperature of the planet based on its central star's luminosity and the planet-star distance, with some assumptions made that are standard but not easy to track down.  273 K = 0 Celsius, about the freezing point of water.  373 K = 100 Celsius, about the boiling point of water.  To give yourself a little leeway, type in "between 260 and 375" in that text box.  Again, the form will update the presented data once your specification is complete.

There are a few hundred exoplanets that will fit these criteria and be displayed (exactly how many depends on what specifically you entered in the selection criteria).  Their "name" (usually a catalog number) is in the first column.  The list comes out sorted by the last selection criterion, so if you do it as described above, the list will be sorted by temperature.  Glancing through the results I got from the query described above, most of the names start with K.  There a smattering of names starting with T, and a handful starting with L.  Not that well suited for an alphabet game....
