It's said that there is no such thing as bad publicity but...

What the story doesn't mention is why the numbers shot up so astronomically this year...some of that is here:

https://www.iihs.org/news/detail/hyundais-kias-are-easy-targets-amid-boom-in-vehicle-thefts

In short:  car theft is way up generally, and the absence of security measure that almost everyone else has, makes them the target of choice.  And as for the timing?  What else...social media.

In 2021, that comparative ease went viral on social media. In one of the earliest-affected states, Wisconsin, the fad caused overall losses from Hyundai-Kia thefts — the amount paid on theft claims per insured vehicle year — to soar to more than 30 times the 2019 level. An insured vehicle year refers to one vehicle insured for one year, two vehicles insured for six months and so forth.

Back in the early 90s, I think, Hondas were easy to break into; a large broad-blade screwdriver forced into the key slot in a door could easily give enough torque to force the lock to rotate so you could get into the car.  I had a car that wasn't a Honda but resembled one of their models.  Sometime ... I didn't notice it when it happened ... someone tried forcing their way in the passenger side door, and rendered the lock inoperable from the outside.  I was a solo at the time so I rarely used the passenger side door.  It was an unknown time later when I wanted to open the passenger side to put some freight in that I discovered the damage, which I never got fixed.
