It just has a complex system that allows both electric motors and the internal combustion engine (ICE) to provide power to the wheels, but without set gear ratios or a traditional transmission. It also does most of its breaking by running one of the electric motors as a generator and storing the energy in the batteries. Well, except while the OP in the thread mentions a urinal, the original story he linked doesn't. And mentions it was a roadside toilet break.
