"Let the Music Play" by Shannon, from the Rhino Records set, Like, Omigod! The 80s Pop Culture Box (totally), with the rubberized 3D cover.

Alas, I don't own their Have a Nice Decade 70s set, with the shag carpet cover.

Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now?

"(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" sung by Johnny Cash.

So, here's the thing: I've really liked this song since I was a kid, but it never landed in my music collection until I paid my $0.99 to Amazon, and downloaded it (and "One Piece At a Time", about a GM factory worker smuggling out a Cadillac from the factory). And so I threw the song into my Now Playing queue, and listened to it.

And stopped it about halfway through. Something was wrong. I restarted the track, and was once again struck by something wrong with the track. And then it hit me: it was too clean. In my memory, the song was in glorious monophonic sound, coming from an AM station that would hum and crackle and drop out occasionally. Later, it was played back in a little Datsun truck from the worn 8-Track, repeating every so often, as the tape performed its infinite loop.

Glorious, imperfect analog. Some things are lost in translation.

"The sky above the port was the color of television tuned to a dead channel"--Neuromancer, by William Gibson.
