Does she like somewhat kinky author-surrogate hardcore pornography? Because that springs to mind before vampire stories as a description of Hamilton's work in recent years.

Especially her fairy series.

Re: Comics are getting too steamy...

I haven't read comics in years, but aren't most of the artists men? Men who probably got their start drawing nudes on their pee-cees in high school? Are there any "famous" female comic book artists?

Just my .02

You jest, but that's how I got started drawing "pretty well". As a kid I drew pretty badly. Enter puberty; Track down dad's dirty magazines; Suddenly my art is improving.

My original game group used to joke that I was the first guy they ever met who would take a picture of a nude woman and draw clothes onto her.

Re: Comics are getting too steamy...

One issue of Firestorm (Vol. 2, I think - don't ask me the issue number, I was dumb enough not to buy it) involved Killer Frost meeting up with a fire-based enemy of Firestorm's. They get to talking about their problems, particularly romantic, and realize they've got a lot in common, though from different angles: She can't even kiss a guy without freezing him solid, he can't touch a girl without reducing her to briquettes, and they suddenly realize "HEY! You're the perfect wo/man for me!" and they commence to making out, for the next two or three pages. It's as explicit as the editors would allow, and I honestly cannot see anything even mildly offensive in the presentation or artwork. They're even making serious, thoughtful, intelligent plans for giving up their villainous lifestyles now that they've found each other. Of course, Firestorm spots their quite spectacular display, shows up, and breaks up the "impending evil alliance." Should have left well enough alone...

As a friend of mine puts it: "When you read a 'Warning-Mature Content' you can trust that the content will be anything but 'mature'.*"

* -- He defines mature as 'having real character development and plot, and you can't solve all your problems by beating someone up/screwing/running away'.

Re: Comics are getting too steamy...

That would make more sense. I had wondered if I had missed a reference to some obscure bit of American culture.

This is of course why I prefer to play Australian* characters in PBEMs, no matter where they are set. There's always at least a slight chance of missing some reference like this.

* Or some reasonable substitute, like my "son of the Phantom-homage" character, who comes from a vaguely East Timor-like island, but went to boarding school in Australia.

I love it, Australian rules superheros.

"Look out, Dr Destroyer has a mega-death lazer cannon!"

"ahhh that ain't a mega-death lazer cannon. Now this is a mega-death lazer cannon!"

Re: Comics are getting too steamy...

Keep in mind that in my study/hovel for my stuff, I have more than the required posters/prints/pictures of the fine ladies on the walls. But I have my POV as well.

The use of sex, violence, and other gimmicks are just that gimmicks. They are used to mask weak writing and plots. To compare comic books to movies, the truely great hollywood movies are the older ones that have little or no sex. It is all implied and handled behind the scenes. Today it is a surprise and worthy of a filler story in the evening news that a movie is a blockbuster and doesn't have sex.

I find it sad that I have to screen the comics my kids see to keep the sexed up ones away from them. By the time I was my oldest's age, I was well on my way to have a sizable collection of comic books. There isn't much today that I find suitable and the little there is usually is cancelled quickly.

Someone mentioned rust age further back in the posts. I am lucky that a close friend owns a comic store and follows the business very closely. He can quote the number of comic book stores and comic book warehouses over the past two, almost three, decades. The numbers are falling further and faster. Maybe the internet has something to do with it, maybe video games. I tend to see this as the dark age.

Is this referring to Killer Frost 2's brief fling with Effigy? I think that involved Green Lantern, not Firestorm, but its been a very long time since I read the issues in question.

Killer Frost

Effigy

Hmm... I thought it was a Firestorm issue, but it's been long and long since I read it. But yes, it was indeed Effigy. I recognize him.

Ok, I was confused because I didn't recall them planning to give up their lifestyle. They were actually breifly partners until Effigy got fed up with Killer Frost and abandoned.

You're right. I actually have the issue in question: Green Lantern vol 3 127 Burning Desire. There actually isn't anything explict in it at.Effigy saves Frost They talk for a bit, sharing their troubles with superheroes and Frost laments about not being to able touch anyone and never meeting a man that can "satisfy" her, heatwise Effigy doesn't mention having trouble touching others. As far as I know, he doesn't have the problem (and did contact two people earlier in the issue). Effigy and Killer Frost embrace and kiss fully clothed for a panel amid a brilliant pyro technical display. He asked Frost "How was it" and she's quite thrilled about it, apparently about being touched. They aren't making plans to quit their villianous lifestyle. Effigy is going about how nothing can stop them "We're young, we've got superpowers, lets DO something! The world is ours for the taking!" and that's when GL shows up.

Comics are GETTING too steamy?

My friend (and knower of all things Pulp and Comic Book-ish) Jess loves to point out a Golden Age hero called The Red Torpedo, who steered his one-man sub into the underwater sea-caves of Queen Klitora.

I am not making this up.

Not really. It all depends where they got their data.

If they had used Enforcer84 as a subject we might be talking 6 or 7 seconds....

I'm sorry, I didn't hear you, I was think ing about sex.

You think about Enforcer84 every 6 or 7 seconds?

He likes me! He...really likes me?

Ack...what a low blow.....

No, I was thinking that Enforcer84 thinks about every 6 or 7 seconds.....

especially if it involves furry creatures..... :sneaky:

Furry creatures?

Not really.

Beaver Maybe.

Re: Comics are getting too steamy...

Well I just got done reading the Teen Titans graphic novels. The new series that is. I also went back and read some old volumes I had from way back. The new series is very well written and the art is great. But the story is much darker. I really miss the old feel, this new Iron Age stuff is so disappointing in a fundamental way. I can't really put my finger on it more than that. Jut disappointing.

No point I guess. I just thought I'd throw that out there and don't really expect an answer. But it may be the reason it is so hard to find anyone to role play superheroes instead of just people with superpowers.

Re: Comics are getting too steamy...

Well there was definitely a Red Torpedo (http://www.internationalhero.co.uk/r/redtorp.htm) but I've found no mention of Queen Bean. Will keep looking...

Nope, I take it back:

Crack Comics #7 No (no title) - vs. Black Shark, discovers Mermazons, a underwater race of Amazons ruled by Queen Klitra

Can't find a pic, but:

An Honorable Mention -must- go to Queen Klitora, ruler of an undersea empire, into whose aquatic caves the Red Torpedo steered his Red Torpedo sub.

No, I'm not making that up.
