"Hey' date=' is that a Hobbit in your cloak, or are you glad toWHoaGodthatshottothekneereallyhurt!"[/quote']

Seeing as Merry's "assist" against the Witch King is such an iconic moment in fantasy literature, it amazes me that for three and a half editions of a certain fantasy rpg, a rogue wasn't allowed to inflict extra "backstab" damage against the undead....

Re: "Neat" Pictures

I took it as the rings dooming them more than they already were.

Only if you also assume that the rings doomed the Elven kings to be under the sky more than they already were, and the Dwarf lords were more doomed to halls of stone than normal Dwarves.

"doomed to die" just expands on the phrase "mortal Men." They're doomed to die by virtue of being mortal Men, just as the Dwarf lords have halls of stone by virtue of being Dwarf lords, etc.

Lucius Alexander

The palindromedary surmises that no rings were forged for Ents because Ents, like trees, already had lots of rings and get new ones every year anyway.

Why was it that only the humans became the Ringwraiths?

Re: "Neat" Pictures

Sauron intended for all the rings to havethat effect -- but the Dwarves cannot be influenced from outside, their rings could only make those wealthy more wealthy. And the Elven rings were presumably never touched by Sauron, made by Celebrimbor alone. And when Sauron made theOne Ring and put it on, the Elven rulers percieved him and took their rings off before he could dominate them.

I thought the story had Sauron making all of the rings mentioned, and gave them out as gifts before making his One to seal their fate. But after reading a bit of Wikipedia, I see that apparently wasn't so, though the elven rings were (according to Wikipedia) made by elves under Sauron's tutelage.

I don't remember the name Celebrimbor at all. Who was that?

And why can't Dwarves be influenced from outside?

And why didn't Sauron know that little bit of very, very important trivia about the Dwarves? Even without the elves taking off their rings, his plan was apparently flawed, since the Dwarves' rings wouldn't bring/bind them.

Re: "Neat" Pictures

Celebrimbor was the master craftsman of the Noldor of Eregion, the besties of the Dwarves of Khazad-Dûm. He was the grandson of Fëanor, and so was of Finwë's family and royalty. The incorruptability of Dwarves was a gift of Aulë when he made them, to better withstan the rigors of a world dominated by Melkor/Morgoth.

And I'd hazard that Sauron didn't know this little factoid, because no-one did. True, he started out as a Maia of Aule, ut he had long since defected to Melkor when the Dwarves were created.

Well, the Dwarves slowly died in their halls of stone and the Elves slowly died under the sky...
