Re: A Thread for Random Videos

Notice how the soldiers going after the Dread are both Confederate and Union? Just how annoying ARE the Dread?

I wonder what's in the chest they stole from the Dread. And I'm guessing the third man to be hung is the judge who gave them the job. But there's so much that isn't told and I'd like to know.

And the dialogue is wonderfully archaic but eloquent, much as the HBO series Deadwood was, but without the profanity.

Which wasn't particularly authentic anyway.

Well we can deduce certain things.

1. The video is set in the Reconstruction Era or a bit after. (Which of course is the generic western era) Looking at it again only the leaders are in the opposed military uniforms. The others are a civilian posse being led by the two military veterans who made common cause against the Dread. The Confederate's wearing a uniform that his girth has outgrown.

2. That gives us an idea who the Dread are. The original Klan were only one of a number of resistance movements that sprang up and then faded away in the Reconstruction. The Klan made their come back because of Birth of A Nation, while the others were long since forgotten. Hence the Klan-like hoods. The Dread are apparently one such group that managed to get a grip on the local area when the occupying forces moved out, such a grip that they didn't just harass powerless minorities but were making the transition from resistance movement to full blown mafioso cult. They seem to be really good at scaring the bejesus out of people, but it's all psychology. When the posse comes after them, they don't pose much of a problem.

3. We can guess at the contents of the chest. It probably contains their ceremonial props, their membership rolls and maybe some actual cash on hand.

Bah! Go ahead and take all morbid and creepifying out of it! The makers of the film actually attribute the Dread with spookier natures.

On the run after a botched robbery, Erwin, who’s experienced a change in heart, tries to take advantage of a deal he’s made for himself and fellow thief Thomas. Instead he calls down the agents of a malevolent supernatural force who will hunt him to the ends of the earth rather than see him escape.

Info from here where some background stufff is available, as well as the song and soundtrack. The soundtrack might be enjoyed by those who like the Firefly soundtrack.
