Not that he didn't know about alcohol -- he was apparently in 12-step programs for years -- but his act was carefully planned and honed over the years. In the 1960s it was common for comics, actors and musicians to go on stage with a "buzz" on. Attitudes about alcohol were very different then. In those days executives had wet bars in their offices. Clip of Johnny Carson and his guests drinking and smoking during the Tonight Show.
