Great writing, great art ... and they gave Wonder Man, who had typically been just an overstuffed can of beef in a costume, some major character development as well as some of the best lines I've ever read ... and the most amusing fight scene, as detailed next. Wonder Man's book was surprisingly solid, considering the star. And you're right, excellent writing - that's why I stuck with it so long. Elementals By Bill Willingham. Comics like that are why I still read. I love to point out to people that talked about Authority (when they were in there boozed up and total crap phase) and how they act like how people would really behave with powers that the Elementals already had covered that ground, was quite brilliant about it, and left them sober most of the time. It is the only comic that I collect. The rest I buy and then eventually give away but those I keep. Wildcats The Joe Casey run. Not so much superheroics more than Corporate power struggles. When Grifter is put out of action he basically gets a 'Temp' to fill in for him. I hear that Morrison (JLA) might be picking up the title as he was a fan of that run as well. (As a side note, the writer I missed the most on that title when it was Wild C.A.T.S. is James Robinson.) Quantum and Woody by Christopher Priest. That thing was hilarious. Only title I was picking up from Acclaim. A large part of the Milestone Collection Some were good and some were bad but all in all I enjoyed the line. DP7 Yeah I read it and loved the winnebago. I hear that Warren Ellis is being given the Universe so I am kind of interested in seeing what comes out of it. It might be good. It might be bad but I am going to really withhold comment until I actually have something in my hand. The Young All-Stars I loved those books. The only comics that I actually ever hung up on my walls. I loved the covers at the time. One of the main heroes ('Iron' Mike Monroe) got the clap, that was the first time I had ever heard of such a thing happening in comics. One of the most wonderful stories I ever read (even if it did kill most of my desire to continue RP'ing one of my fave characters)(*), and they had to rush it to a half-assed 'stopping point' (it was nowhere near complete enough to be called a proper ending) in a few issues because that's how much lead notice they had that CrossGen was goin' down... with tons of story left yet to tell. In my fantasy world, Disney turns the sucker into an animated series but has Studio Ghibli do everything creative with it, and just handles distribution. I know, dreaming, me. Who would have thought such a cruddy toy could become such a great premise and comic? I liked New Warriors back when they first came out, but got out of comics at about the time Rage lost his grandmother. Just how did Marvel 'drop the ball'? I seem to recall losing interest as they brought in some of the newer characters and the art (IMO) worsened and Fabian (IIRC) was no longer on it, BUT the most recent version of the New Warriors was selling out on a reality TV show. I vaguely remember this, and it seemed cool. Again, what did Marvel do to Jack Monroe? Okay... this will lead to spoilers... so if you plan to read Brubaker's EXCELLENT run on Cap, you might want to avert your eyes. Actually, THIS wasn't bad, just tragedy. TRUE Tragedy, and not just shock value. Jack Monroe was shot by a shadowy figure in the latest run of Captain America comics. Jack was drinking pretty heavily Most likely the Winter Solider, who may, believe it or not, be a brainwashed Bucky. In another issue, we see what lead Jack Monroe to this sorry state. Jack finds out that the supersoldier serum in his body is finally breaking down, an imperfect creation finally going wrong. The hallucinatory schizephrenia he suffered from originally may return. Jack is on borrowed time. Knowing this, he goes to visit 'Baby Bucky' who is now a happy little girl growing up in a loving home. He spies on her, knowing it would be wrong to introduce herself to the girl who surely doesn't remember him. Then he over hears someone talking about the kids... he sees apparent Drug Dealers joking around how "The little monsters just eat it up". Jack decides he's going to help the kids before he completely snaps, the last decent thing he can do is make sure the young girl who once relied on him is safe from scum like that, and it is clear he doesn't have much time at all. Images of Cap's first sidekick, the REAL bucky, comes through the mirror when he washes his face. Images of past hims mocking him. Clearly, he's flipping out, but he keeps trying to take the drug dealers down so they can't hurt the kids. Finally, in the moments before he is shot, it is revealed to the readers that the "Drug Dealers" were nothing of the sort. They were just ice cream truck drivers, innocent men who in his psychosis, Jack has been hunting as if they were vicious criminals because his hallucinations had started long before the more obvious manifestations. Jack dies never knowing that his attempts to do the 'right thing' have been anything but. To this day I am not sure if the man who shot Jack did it to get at cap, or as a mercy killing. Tragic. I was torn between "That SUCKS!" because I liked Jack Monroe as a character, and marveling at how good the story was. I'm leaning towards the latter.
