AdamLeisemann
Re: Genre-crossover nightmares Wait...they're not? It can be so much more. The only difference would be the aesthetic. ^.^ Take a "Conan" story. Now, with the violence and mature themes (including horror) prevalent to them, they are clearly not kids' stuff. On the other hand, Conan is not pornographic either, even though the movies have their (unerotic) nudes (though I don't know if that's part of the original tales, or just based on breasts being the cheapest crowd-pleaser.) Would any of that change if our barbarian hero was a wolf or a bear instead of a human? Personally, I don't think so. To me, furry is just another aesthetic, just like how many anime could just as easily be done in live action (Grave of the Fireflies or Barefoot Gen in particular). Those were animated because that was part of the desired aesthetic. Okay. Enough ranting from me.

Old Man
Re: Genre-crossover nightmares Just be glad you don't see the appendages controlling those puppets these days. You laugh, but I sit and watch and I try to figure out how they're controlling the muppets. It looks like most muppets take at least two people to control--two hands and a mouth. Some are obviously radio-controlled, like Elmo on a trike. And lots of the new shows are shot against a bluescreen to make it easier to hide the operators. But I still can't figure out how Big Bird's beak moves, or how the guy in the suit can see past all the feathers.

Only one of his hands moves, if you watch closely. And it's pretty easy to weave cloth that seems opaque far away, but can be seen through close up. A couple of feathers in place to cover the area wouldn't block vision by too much. And Big Bird rarely if ever does anything that would require the operator to see well. Old Man
Re: Genre-crossover nightmares Actually I went and did some serious googling after I posted that. It seems BB's right hand either doesn't move or is attached to his head with a wire (I'll be looking for this next time I'm stuck watching Sesame Street). The muppeteer has a monitor in there so he sees what the audience would see. It all sounds very... difficult.
austenandrews
Re: Genre-crossover nightmares Doing research for my HeroCentral game, I found out a lot about how the Muppets are operated. It's pretty impressive. The mind boggles to imagine the sardine-tight crowds under some of those group scenes. I guess good oral hygeine is pretty high on the list of required traits for a Muppeteer.
