Re: Grond is up with podcast

Dunno. If Cryptic's motive was avoiding similarities with established characters, you'd think they'd have made a little more effort to keep him from looking like Goro from Mortal Kombat.

I swear the first thing that came to mind when I saw the picture was a deep voice saying, "FINISH HIM!"

Well' date=' they'd be crazy not to use it if the MMORPG is successful at all. :)[/quote']

I thought I read somewhere that they owned the Champions world from 6th ed. back. Found it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champions_Online

History

The game's announcement followed the cancellation of Cryptic's Marvel Universe Online[10] as well as the sale of their Intellectual Properties City of Heroes and City of Villains to distributor NCSoft in November 2007.[12] On February 28, 2008, Cryptic announced they had purchased the entire Champions intellectual property, selling the rights to publish the 6th edition back to former owner Hero Games. The 6th edition books will synergistically allow players to adapt their Champions Online characters to the pen-and-paper roleplaying game.[13]

Some of the ones I've seen give me the impression of video game characters, not because they basically are but like the designers felt that shading wasn't enough and they had to "add stuff" and it never looked right. Either stuff looked like it was thrown on or excessive detail was added for no good reason. The latter I felt about Dr. Destroyers new armor. Before it had evolved into clean simple lines with a few touches of elegance and then went straight into bling.

I've also noticed that a lot of characters in MMOs tend to veer to cartoonish monsters rather than genuinely ugly or even close to horrific monsters. It could be because of the age group playing the game but that would mean they crop out gore and nudity and not develop a fear of offending people because a mob has too many teeth and drools.

Hero Games sold the Champions and Dark Champions IP to Cryptic. Cryptic then gave Hero Games a license in perpetuity (free, as confirmed by Steve Long) to publish RPG books using that IP. As the owner of the IP, Cryptic must approve anything that Hero Games publishes using those two IPs. Hero Games also gets to use Champions Online conceptual art and screenshots in their books. We've already seen this in both Monster Island and The Book of the Destroyer and will continue to see this in future Champions and Dark Champions books.

I have edited the wikipedia page to reflect that Cryptic licensed, not sold, the rights to publish Champions/Dark Champions RPG books to Hero, which is what was stated in the press release cited as the source for the information in the article.

Re: Grond is up with podcast

I wonder if there's any significance to both Grond and Talisman (mentioned in Witchcraft's description) both being seen recently in the southwest.

Kelcyron

From what I understand, one of the major locations in the game is an area of the American southwest that includes Stronghold, Snake Gulch, and the HQ for "Project Greenskin". Talisman might be in the southwest in connection with one of those storylines or whatever she is up to may be a separate storyline taking place in that area (perhaps something involving Native American mysticism).

Yuppers. People tend to mix up the Champions IP and the Hero System IP. DoJ sold the Champions and Dark Champions IP to Cryptic, who then licensed the right to publish RPG materials using them back to DoJ. However DoJ did NOT sell the Hero System IP. They still own that. They just sold the IP for 2 of the settings to Cryptic, not the game itself.

Re: Grond is up with podcast

From a market share perspective, its a pretty hairsplitting difference.

But, on the main topic, I don't care for the Grond appearance --> looks like they took a Hulk frame and added extra arms and horns.

Granted, that's all Grond really is anyway, but at least the classic and CU Champs versions have some characterization.

Also, what's with the glowing bubbles on his back? Warts? Grond sized bacne? Something else?

Re: Grond is up with podcast

I think because this incarnation of Grond has some radiation in his origin, these are likely places where his inner radioactivity is erupting through his skin.

(I tried to phrase that clinically, but it still sounds gross.) :idjit:

So it's radioactive acne!

*oh dear, I'm writing that up in my brain right now*

I challenge anyone to use the phrase "erupting through his skin" without making it sound gross. :hush:

Re: Grond is up with podcast

I really don't mind the look of the new Grond but then again I never played in a straight Champions setting. All those characters where a) something to punch or B) someone to interact with. I've always thought that the players are the heroes and NPCs are window dressing and that's pretty much how it will be in the MMO.

Storn's version will always be how I think of him. This one looks kind of artificial or created. Kind of Goro meets the Van Helsing Frankenstein monster.

Re: Grond is up with podcast

It looks okay. Not better or worse than the official version' date=' IMO. Just different. I don't see why they needed to change the background - the original was better in that regard... again, IMO.[/quote']

The only substantial difference in his background AFAICS is the inclusion of "radiation" as one of his mutating factors, which Cryptic appears to have emphasized. I raised this point on the Champions Online discussion forums, and one of the Cryptic forum reps mentioned that they had in fact followed the relevant text about Grond from Champions Universe, and quoted this line: "the mutated victim of a horrible chain of unfortunate circumstances combined into one massive radiation accident" (CU p. 100). Apparently they didn't realize the context of the term "radiation accident" in the Champions PnP game.
