It's also difficult (at least for me) for any tv show to remain watchable after 3-4 seasons.

I saw it two months earlier and alongside Nathan Fillion. Well, he was in the audience if not right next to me personally.

No.  According to NPR the sex tape that he is referencing doesn't exist.  Of course being the good, thorough journalist that they are they had to watch a number of other sex tapes make sure that they weren't the one.  You know, just to be responsible.

I like all the CW superhero shows. I realize that there have been legendary comic book stories along the way; stories that are real landmarks. Most of them are not. I consider the CW shows on par with following a monthly comic. You're going to get episodes that range from brilliant to blunder. I've found them much more watchable than the endless cycle of "reality TV", criminals as heroes, hokey sitcoms, and yet another police procedural shows.

I've been catching up on Sleepy Hollow, currently nearing the end of Season 2. I enjoyed the 1st season, but missed the start of Season 2 and just never got back to it. Not a great show, but a fairly entertaining one as long as you don't mind some deliberately over-the-top Romance dialogue between Crane and his wife. But some of the visuals are really well done. The plot is totally bizzaro, as you might expect from a series whose central premise is that Ichabod Crane, who was a spy for George Washington during the American Revolution - which was actually an occult war trying to stop demons from conquering our world - anyway Crane pulls a Rip Van Winkle and wakes up in 2013 and he's being chased by the Headless Horseman who is British RedCoat with an assault rifle who is also one of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse, and he's partnered with a local cop who's descended from a long line of Witnesses, and oh yeah his wife is a witch and she's trapped in limbo and their son is

I asume you are in the group saying "not a bad movie" either. I belong there too, firmly. Should have not cut that much on either of the two, but otherwise they were a solid start for the DC Live Action Universe.

Superman not killing was always a "stated character trait". He just always had a CvK. It somehow even applied when he was brainwashed or controlled. But they never delved into why. Men of Steel exactly goes into that area.

Actually I recently stumbeled over thise video, that deals with a lot of the criticisms:

    Totally good advice, and thanks.

I'll be clear, this is mostly just banter. For example, Old Man, totally reasonable individual and while I disagree with Old Man on MoS having at all an angsty characterization, it will not lessen my view of Old Man at all. He's one of my favorite members.

I actually don't think it's a great movie, I just think there's a different standard being applied to that movie than to pretty much all the other comic book movies by some people, but it's not a big deal. I'll debate that, but I certainly don't let it lessen my opinion of people.

I suppose what I'm passionate about is the freedom for writing to take the elements of a character to new places. That's where a lot of this is coming from on my part, I suppose.

That last post was the result of the THIRD time on this thread that someone suggested that people who don't agree with them on exactly how Superman should be depicted, those people are morally questionable or deficient in character. The first two times were quite specifically directed to me, while ignoring my whole point on why writing an ideal as a character has often lead to highly questionable moral content.

I can totally deal with the fact that as we argue on the internet, we might gloss over important points the other makes. Making declarations about each other's lack of morality is simply not something that any reasonable person is going to do when arguing the moral virtues of a particular character, so I, for my part, didn't enter into that pit of unchecked irony.

I basically ignored the first two. I allowed myself one response, it's now done.

I'll probably continue to point out scene by scene summaries of the marked absence of angst in MoS, etc.

So, to be clear, yes, they may feel passionate about this, but I haven't, one single time, suggested that anyone's morality is lacking for any reason, and most of those I've been arguing with have not done so either. Those who have, well, I'll just assume they had a bad day and move on.

    Thanks for your reasonable response.

Wow Darkness, you are really passionate about this topic. If I may be so bold, might I suggest that those on the opposite side of the discussion feel just as strongly about their opinions. I agree with much of what you are saying, but I don't think either of us are going to convince anyone to change their mind. Don't get so wrapped up in it. Just an observation and suggestion.

With Hero, you only ever need the main book. Everything else is superfluous. I think the 6th edition being two volumes was a mistake. But hey, whatever you need to do to sell more books.

It's kind of amazing. They do it to a bunch of black metal songs.

I thought Thor 2 was better than Thor 1. I would rate them both around the same level as Iron Man 3. I enjoyed watching all of them, but they were not the best of the Marvel lineup.

It would be good, I think, to also read something that was written prior to the 1980s, to get a more thorough understanding of how the character has been portrayed. Restricting one's reading to only Crisis and post-Crisis material will certainly deliver the modern trajectory of the character, but not necessarily the core of him. There was over 40 years of material that was written prior to Crisis, and I think that has more to say about who Superman really is than all the post-modern experimentation that has struggled (and continues to struggle) to keep him popular/relevant.

I kind of disagree with the notion that iconic characters should be changed in fundamental ways to adapt them to the current zeitgeist. Rather, I think the creative challenge ought to be finding ways to maintain the character's core being, no matter how "old fashioned", despite the changing times. None of the attempts I've seen to turn Superman or Capt. America into douchebag anti-heroes have ever worked, no matter how much that characterization may resonate with a contemporary readership.

    I'd go with:

    Man of Steel (1986)
    Superman for All Seasons (1998)
What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way (2001)
Secret Identity (2004 - technically am Elseworlds but really good)
    Kingdom Come (1996)

All are really enjoyable. "What's so funny" is the story featuring the Elite that is essentially a response to the Authority comic series (and was in my opinion brilliant).

There are others, "What ever happened to the Man of Tomorrow?", "All Star Superman", etc. Lots of really interesting stories in the last thirty years or so. That isn't even getting into the Justice League or World's Finest or Batman/Superman. But I like all the ones I listed.
