  1. Re: Champions "What Ifs" SPOILER He did. :sigh: One of the dumber things from TC. QUIT PEEKING IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE!
  2. Re: Finally, I bought the game! Only one problem... Yes, that's pretty much it, (paraphrased, I believe). Here in June, 2003, is one of the earliest posts/threads I can find referencing this.
  3. Re: Finally, I bought the game! Only one problem... (My initial feeling is that when you refer to "people" you actually mean "bblackmoor" but I could be wrong.) I disagree. I played Champions, back in the BBB days, for nearly a year before I purchased the main book. That book being BBB, of course. This was even before Heromakr, or at least, before the group I was with knew of Heromakr. (I started playing around 1992-3, if anyone knows when Heromakr actually came out.) The math wasn't a problem; it's really applied junior high mathematics. I have a player in my FtF game and the ONLY book she has is the Fantasy Hero book, though it was an error by the store personell because she was trying to order FREd. My personal opinion on why HERO Games isn't booming is because the younger audiences (those who haven't graduated high school) who enjoy Collectable Card Games have closed off the higher-thinking areas of their brains. Once they become more intelligent, they'll enjoy HERO.
  4. Re: Character Name Help Well, if he's a Vietnam Vet, he's going to be at least in his 50's. Are you sure that's the age you're wanting?
  5. Re: Champions "What Ifs" What if: Doctor Destroyer actually died with no clone! Who would be the big master villain for HERO Games then? Eurostar succeeded in legally taking over a European country or two? UNTIL was as ineffective as the UN? Steve Long enjoyed CLOWN?
  6. Re: Finally, I bought the game! Only one problem... No one said it was an official title. It's a nickname, as you well know. Being anal retentive just makes you look petty, again. BBB - Big Blue Book = 4th Edition FREd - Fifth Revised Edition = HERO System 5th Edition 5ER - 5th Edition Revised = HERO System 5th Edition Revised
  7. Re: Finally, I bought the game! Only one problem... I play Champions for the most part and am starting a Teen Champions game; however, I'm in a Star Hero game, and have been tempted to purchase the books for this genre since I'm unfamiliar with it. The only reason I haven't is because I have a limited income where money gets allocated to things that are necessary (rent, food, insurance, fuel, and other "bills") and pleasures (internet, cable, Netflix) that have a higher priority. When extra money is available, I tend to purchase 2-3 books, which turns out to be about 5-8 a year.
  8. Re: Finally, I bought the game! Only one problem... I haven't heard that. In fact, the only people I've ever known to play any Hero games have always been those who've already graduated high school, so there's never been a "convincing" necessary, only "can I afford it after I pay bills?" Actually, you only need Sidekick, FREd or 5ER to play the game; the rest is really icing. And Hero Games isn't the only one to do this, and it makes sense, to me. If you put everything into one big book, it would end up costing about $100, which, while it would be a savings in the long run, would have fewer people willing to purchase. Then, with only one book, the company goes bankrupt. Pretty much every RPG goes through some basics: Core Rules GM book Setting Extras - weapons, monsters, groups, et cetera that can be purchased by GMs and players alike Expansions (either the setting or rules) Great success Different genres/settings (D&D had Ravenloft, Birthright, Forgotten Realms, and more; WW has Vampire, Mummy, Mage and others) More books to detail the different genres/settings. For an RPG company to be successful, they need to produce more books for players (which by default are for the GMs as well) as to books just for GMs (though there should be some). When you stop producing new books, you stop producing a new source of income. Unlike Bibles and dictionaries, there generally isn't a reason to purchase multiple copies of the same gaming book (though I have done that for the Ravenloft setting in 2E D&D, but there was a legit reason. ).

  10. Re: What in genre bit do you like that no one else seems to enjoy ? Heh, I've been on a Teen Champions kick recently. I started one up on HeroCentral and two other have followed this week. You might look into starting one or joining one of the two new games.

  13. Re: Map of Hero System Players - Please Contribute! Was it really "all of a sudden" or did you really slowly dissipate when you weren't watching?
  14. Re: Just Picked Up Champions Worldwide I still haven't been able to read all the way through it, yet. I'm on Central American heroes right now (it's just not an entertaining read for me). I'm not really excited about what I've seen. I've been least impressed with the brick write-ups. They pretty much seem to be the same, with minor variances. Maybe it's the brick archetype in general, but none of them I've read so far strike me as "unique" or even "outstanding." For 5E, is there a female brick other than Black Diamond in the CU?
  15. Re: Homages you would like to see officially
  16. Re: Homages you would like to see officially You can't wait even five minutes to quash my dreams of the fantastic?
  17. Re: Homages you would like to see officially I would like to see an homage done for Hawkman and Hawkwoman. Not only were they a married couple, but they were my favorites. (Strangely enough, I've never made an homage to either. Hmm.) I second the Juggernaut, though would like to see a Wonder Woman one done as well. The Female Furies would be pretty neat, but they're not as big of headliners as some others. What's funny is that until people mentioned it (on a previous thread about homages), I never thought of Grond as a Hulk homage. I had always pictured Ogre as one; Grond seemed better written, IMHO. Anyway, I think it would be real neat if DC just up and decided either (1) they didn't want to worry about the RPG market any more and allowed Hero to make official translations of DC characters, or (2) they wanted to make extra money so they loaned the rights for Hero Games to make official translations of DC characters. (Yes, very similar, and each very unlikely, but one can think of nice things.)
  18. Re: Map of Hero System Players - Please Contribute! Fine, fine, fine, I contributed.
  19. Re: Revamping the Horsemen I never treated them as the Biblical aspects, but have thought about doing so (it just never reached fruitation). I personally try to introduce them one at a time into the campaign (generally starting with War, but that's me; if you wanted to go in the order according to Revelations, that could add more dramatic effect) and then introduce the scenario. I much prefer them over the less enthusastic, less interesting Crowns of Krim, who apparently are taking the niche of the Seven Horseman ([scarcasm]and we can't have two types in that niche, oh no![/sarcasm]). I'm running a game on Hero Central in the CU, so I'll probably use The Wrath module but substitute the Crowns, though in my face to face campaign (which uses the San Angelo setting) I'll be using the Seven Horseman.
  20. Re: Experience Points If it helps any, here's what I use: _____________________________ Base XP for being in a scenario: 1 point PCs were on a very long, involved adventure: 2 points Adventure ran more than one session: +1 point The adventure was difficult +1 point Characters were heavily outnumbered +1 point Characters were clever, inventive, or subtle +1 point Players role-played well +1-3 points Characters solved a mystery +1 point Teamwork, both in and out of comabt +1-2 points The adventure was a resounding success +1 point Players role-played very poorly, or not at all -1 point Playing solo, against team cohesion -1-3 points The adventure was a terrible failure -1 point* The italicized words were where I would stress the most important word(s) about experience. For example, in the bank and at the mansion, you weren't heavily outnumbered, even though the enemy had more. Now, had there been multiple supers with multiple 8-man teams of agents attacking you at the same time, then you would have been heavily outnumbered. Being outnumbered is genre for heroes, especially by simpleton agents. Overcoming great odds is the stuff legends are made of. *For terrible failure, I'm refering to an adventure where the players had a good chance of winning, but really messed things up. There may be an adventure or two down the road where I expect you to lose (and may even design it that way), but if you play it like heroes in a comic, I won't consider it a terrible failure at all. Something terrible would be allowing innocents to get hurt, captured or killed where you had a reasonable opportunity to prevent this, but messed it up with lousy roleplaying decisions or just trying straight combat where that wouldn't have been prudent. _____________________________
