A list of great movies would not be complete without mentioning The Princess Bride.   'Nuff said.

I've always enjoyed My Favorite Year.  Starring Peter O'Toole and Mark Linn-Baker, it's set at a live-TV comedy show with O'Toole being the often-drunk guest host (a swashbuckling actor named Alan Swann) and Linn-Baker the hero-worshiping junior writer (Benji Stone) tasked with riding herd on Swann until the night of the show.  The on-air fight scene at the end is hilariously great, but there are also some wonderful moments throughout, particularly Benji's "silly G**-d***ed hero" speech to Swann.

With appropriate respect to Neil deGrasse Tyson, Carl Sagan's 1980 PBS series Cosmos was a masterpiece that I don't believe will ever be equaled. I was about12 years old at the time, and I'd been watching Star Trek reruns for years. But this was something completely different. This was science fact. Beautiful visuals, amazing music, and Carl Sagan unfolding the mysteries of the universe to my eager young mind. This TV series literally changed my life. I don't know if I would be a science teacher had I not seen this when I was young.

All  five of these examples so far were remakes of something else.  If that’s the list I’ve got to include Battlestar Galactica.

If on the other hand you’re looking for perfection that should never be screwed with,  I’ll go get my trusty board with a nail thru it and defend with my life our last, best hope.....Babylon 5.

As a big fan of Robert A. Heinlein  I agree the movie sucked on many levels.
But on reflection and after hearing of Virginia Heinlein’s medical bills I now sooth my soul by watching the film and whenever that Norwegian military hating son of a slag writer/director fraks up the story I just hear the sound of a cash register and see all her bills being stamped PAID.

I would like to see a remake of Starship Troopers that wasn't a complete middle finger to the original book.

As far as The Princess Bride is concerned, I think anyone who suggests a remake should be put into the Zoo of Death.

(It's possible that I'm a little opinionated where these movies are concerned.)

    The loss of Elliot Stabler.

He was the series hothead, but was a good balance to Olivia Benson's more compassionate outlook on the squad.  Elliot was written out of the show because he had one too many shootings, and because the actor was getting too expensive for the show.

The problem isn't that the character left.  It's that the replacement detectives that came later were all so weak characters that they were simply walking emotions and bad decisions then actually human beings.  And the fact it took Olivia so long to make Captain is an insult.

This thread seems to have drifted off the stated topic.  “Jumping the Shark” generally means a particular point in a long running series where you can point to and say “this is where the trouble started”.  Like the shark jump on Happy Days or the birth of the character Meath that Jonathon Winters played on Mork & Mindy etc.
Here we seem to be complaining about stuff in the first season of a show we personally didn’t happen to like.

All these complaints about the quality of the effects.  Am I the only one old enough to have sat thru live action TV Spider-Man? To anyone who has a problem with the Ben Affleck version of Daredevil I wish to turn your attention to the acting chops of Mr. Rex Smith as the man without fear.  Not happy with the physique or accent of Chris Helmsworth, may I remind you of Eric Allen Kramer.   And let us never forget David Hasselhoff as Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

You may be right, but I see Mary more as a Leslie Tompkins/ Doctor of Crime Alley kind of character.  Giving her sister a much needed ear on the street.

For what it's worth, I can't think of a single instance of a company giving something away and it _wasnt_ advertising: even donations to flood victims and children's hospitals are done amidst great fanfare and considerable "hey!  Look at us!  Look how great we are!"

Once we accept that they're all evil in some unforgivable way,  we'll...  I guess there's nowhere to go from there: they are all evil in some unforgivable way.  Now let's go have some 'roo burgers and get to gaming.

The teacher gave her fifth grade class an assignment: Get their parents to tell them a story with a moral at the end of it.

The next day, the kids came back and, one by one, began to tell their stories.

There were all the regular types of stuff: Spilled milk and pennies saved. But then the teacher realized, that only Janie was left.

"Janie, do you have a story to share?"

"Yes ma'am. My daddy told me a story about my Mommy. She was a Marine pilot in Desert Storm, and her plane got hit. She had to bail out over enemy territory, and all she had was a flask of whiskey, a pistol, and a survival knife.
She drank the whiskey on the way down so the bottle wouldn't break, and then she parachuted right into the middle of 20 Iraqi troops.  She shot 15 of them with the pistol, until she ran out of bullets, killed four more with the knife, till the blade broke, and then she killed the last Iraqi with her bare hands."

''Good Heavens," said the horrified teacher.  "What did your Daddy tell you was the moral to this horrible story?"

"Don't Screw with Mommy when she's been drinking."
