  1. Re: Weirdest Party You]ve ever had My character got a third eye as well. had to wear a bandana all the time to hide it. Celebmegil the Fighter/Mage. That entire party was evil, twisted, nasty, rapacious and ugly. That was their good points. How we managed so much gaming with that group of characters I will never know!
  2. Re: Weirdest Party You]ve ever had An old D&D version of Markdoc's campaign world from about 26 years ago. Three brothers who gave rise to a family of related characters in at least three campaigns that I know of. The Brother's Snotgobblerson - Bjorn, Lars and Gunnar. My character was Bjorn and he was a D&D fighter with no attribute above 10. Somehow he became a fearsome Beserk. One of the wierdest games I ever payed in.
  3. Re: Recommended power level Start and Max I do the same as Markdoc. Most foes are usually SPD 2. But given that I use the random phase determination method of combat (rolling a dice and anyone that SPD or higher has a phase) means that even a SPD 2 warrior can be a formidible foe if the phase dice rolls low.
  4. Re: Spending experience points I tend only to put a brake on experience point expenditure when it is patently obvious that the character has had no opportunity to acquire or build the new skill or attribute. For instance, spending 3 pts on a new combat level when they never pulled their sword out or spent off-time practising/sparring with their fellows would be a no-no. On the other hand if they spent a month travelling through the wilderness with an experienced outdoorsman I would let them buy Survival without them explicitly saying "During the trip I'll carefully watch what Borg does when he builds shelters, sets traps for game etc etc". Some things can be taken as read in most groups .
  5. Re: Wanted - Comprehensive Western Martial Arts Design Or condmened prisoners with helmets on their heads with no eye slits who were shoved into the arena to provide comic relief. The crowd shouting "he's on your left, No, your right" as they whaled about blindly. Now, that is where some Defence manouvre and Combat Sense may come in handy - at least until the next intermission when you are needed topside again.
  6. Re: Skinning cats I find that when it comes to skinning cats PS: Hunter or Trapper will suffice.
  7. Re: A Question Of Marriage 6d6 Drain on Wallet.
  8. Re: Help Required. Undead PC You read things wrong - my post count was 32. My age is somewhat older. In fact, I have half a decade on you Doc. As to boards, only joined recently. Have been away from gaming for three years and have only recently restarted a game.
  9. Re: Help Required. Undead PC Pretty new. I have only been using Hero since 1983. Just never had a concept like this to deal with before. The player is one of those who is never happy with building a "normal' character. Thanks for the ideas guys.
  10. I have a player in my Fantasy game who wants to make an undead necromancer PC. I liked the idea - being not alive but with free will, secret ID (undead after all). How would you suggest we build the character? As an automaton, or some other way? Cheers Brian
  11. Re: Mount Up! Buying Mounts in Fantasy HERO! This was really funny and something I never really thought about using before - but now I will. Real life story, my Dad used to work on a big farm here in New Zealand when I was a nipper. he had this horse that just loved killing sheep when she was alone. If there were sheep in the next paddock, she would let them amble up to the fence line to chew on the nice longer grass that grew alongside the fence, then reach over and grab them by the back and try to flick them into her paddock. If she succeeded she would chase them around and stomp them to death, if the act of grabbing and tossing them hadn't killed them in the first place. Could never work out why Dad didn;t shoot her but he said that apart from that trait, she was a damn fine working horse.
  12. Just a question as to how you would hande combat in a shield wall. I was thinking that because there is no leaping around, dodging etc, that DCVs would be lower. However, the character would get bonuses for his own shield and those on either side. Any thoughts?
  13. Re: How often is the Skill: Acting used by your characters? I have had a few characters use it. A ninja PC in my Sengoku game had it. Used it as a complimentary skill. Also, in another game a character who was impersonating a knight used it.
  14. Re: Monsters Who hasn't used that After Man book? It is about the most fantastic resource for the most 'realistic made up' animals I have ever seen. The pictures are handy as well!
  15. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER Nope. You have to drive in Napoli to see really crazy drivers. One of my cousins told me, after I queried why they bother having traffic signals, was that they made good year-round Christmas decorations.
  16. Re: Need some advice about designing a campaign Why don;t you have a look at Markdoc's magic system on his Gothick Empires website. I use the same system and it works really well. Magic is flexible and not tied to a particular framework.
  17. Re: Paladin help In my game Paladins are warriors dedicated to a particular temple or religion. Some have skills with sorcery and others do not. I decided not to make them clones of the old D&D paladins.
  18. Re: ORCS! What makes them our favourite enemies??? I like Orcs. In my game they are more often than not on the side of the bad guys, but mainly because they are always attacked by humans and the they figure that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. But sometimes they are not the bad guys. Hey, they love their kids too - especially with some salt and a nice brew.
  19. Re: Bleeding In my games, when a person goes to negative BOD they are bleeding to death. They take an additional 1 BOD every Post-12. When they reach negative starting BOD they die. A First Aid or Doctoring roll will stop further loss of BOD. I figure that any wounds that do BOD but don't go below Zero BOD are scratches, bad abrasions and such like.
  20. Re: Why do we object to mechanics? I don't mind Mechanics. It is Engineers I cannot stand.
  21. Re: Ships of the Dark Ages and Medieval Period I suggest that you get hold of the Columbia Games supplement for Harn called "Pilot's Almanac". It will answer all of yoru questions and give you some cool maps as well.
  22. Re: And off we go! I used pretty much the same story in a Segnoku session (original aye?). A good little filler!
  23. Re: Norse Beastiary - a little help I think that ICE put out a book with duel stats for Rolemaster and Hero system called Campaign Classics: Vikings. It has various mnonsters such as Aftergangers and/or Doppelgangers which were very cool.
  24. Re: And off we go! that sounded fun Mark. Shades of Usagi in that scenario perhaps?
  25. Re: Are HERO gamers more wedded to more "realistic" game physics? The thing that I like about Hero System is that it is scalable. I have played in campaigns that have had starting characters created as normals + 5 points, with experienced NPCs being in the 25pt range. Have also played in games with 300-400 pt monsters.
