  1. Re: What game would you LOVE to play in? I would like to play my old character Brok Bloodspear again in Markdoc's Gothick empires game. Hell, I would like to play rather than ref...just for once before I kark it.
  2. Re: Pirate Hero Not sure if it has been mentioned in this thread yet but try checking GURPS Swashbucklers. Good resource material. Also, the old Fantasy Games Unlimited "Privateers and Gentlemen" RPG and tabletop rules.

  4. Re: Rant? Speed in Hero The same goes for my games. Most players are SPD3, with two out of six being SPD 4. When you use the random phase method (rolling a d6 to determine what SPDs act) the difference in SPDs is not that great. In our last major combat I rolled six 1s in a row when determing which SPDs could act - so everyone went (PCs and all NPCs, everyone got post-12 recoveries so no-one got tired from END loss and I had a crap load of number crunchign to do.)
  5. Re: Soldiers marching. At the Battle of Austerlitz (2 December 1805), Marshal Davout'sIII Corps marched 110 km (about 70 miles in 48 hours and went in to action when immediately. Apparently he had hardly any stragglers. That was on crappy early 19th C roads.
  6. Re: Traveller=Pulp Hero+Star Hero I always thought that the original Traveller looked a lot like the Earl Dumarest books by E.C Tubbs - Low passage that involved a high risk, middle passage, jump space, lots of planets visited by occasional ships etc etc
  7. Re: Help me build a tricorder-like hand-computer I have been thinking of running a Star Trek game for some time now and was was also wondering about this. But I then decided that I wouldn't bother with the game mechanics of all the whizzy things like tri-corders. Instead I was going to use them as skill modifiers (+2 to roll or something like that when using it for appropriate task - like reconfiguring the trans lateral flux capacitor thingy). Everyone already knows what they do - they have seen the movies and TV series enough.
  8. Re: Western Hero Book I thought that the Western Hero genre book was on of the best ever produced by Hero Games. I ran a short lived campaign using it.

I personally don't understand the need to define everything in the game world in Hero System terms. If that is your thing however, how do you build a cup of tea in Hero system?

Not sure if he is costed exactly right but... Seth Williams a.k.a. "The Baby-faced kid" Seth Williams is good with his two six-guns, and he knows it. He has won a number of gun-fights and is building himself a reputation. However, he is also honourable and will not fight dirty unless he really has to. He prefers to do his gunplay up close as he uses fast draw revolvers with short barrels which greatly limit his range. He has worked as a cowboy and as a gun-for-hire. He is currently not wanted by any jurisdictions that he knows of. Although he is young he has covered a fair bit of the country and knows the west quite well (in a general sense). He has had some schooling and can read and write to an average standard.   11. Re: Pimp My Stardrive! Personally I like the Space Opera style of stardrive (FTL - go as far as your supplies of consummable last or the fuel runs out). Played a great game of SO many yarns ago where we had a mega-skilled engineer who really pimped our drive, allowing us to do the whole "Kessel run in four parsecs " thing.

  17. Re: Terran Trade Authority I brought a second hand copy a few months back of, and I think the title is "Starliners of the Terran trade Authority". I have all the others. Another book I really like is a book called Tour of the Galaxy, which reads like a scrapbook for a holiday (with a bit of espionage thrown in). Full of things like brouchures, receipts from shops etc etc. Remember that one?

  19. Re: Ars Magica I have only played one Ars magica game and it was set in Harn world and was a lot of fun for the short time it ran before the GM went overseas. I found the rules OK, not great - but the magic side I really enjoyed. From my limited experience it was combat-lite game and we never even had anything that resembled a combat in the entire game.

Re: Hero System and Rpg.net After years and years of reffing Hero system I find that the only thing that slows down combat is when people don't begin to think about what they are going to do until it is their phase. If everyone is on top of their characters and know what they are doing then combat is fast and furious. I tend to make people decide in seconds or else they miss their turn (I count them as defending, putting levels into DCV).
  23. Re: Traveller-era guns I used Blasters in Traveller games many years ago. From memory they were TL11-13 or something like that. They were not uber-weapons so didn't unbalance anything. Traveller doesn't have personal force-fields so a high velocity slug or needle will always be a great way of delivering lots of killing damage to the target.
  24. Re: Traveller: Jump Drive Not at all risky. First off, you use your flash TL telescopes to scan the next system to see if there is a gas giant in system (wobbling stars and all that stuff). We can do that now from Earth.
