  1. Re: Top Signs that you need to rethink your GMing. I have a friend who once gamed with a GM who would watch porn on his laptop. During play. The truly worrying part of the story is that his GMing actually got better once he started watching porn during sessions.
  2. Re: Your PC's might be underpowered if... Your Secret Identity isn't to protect your family from danger, but from embarrasment.
  3. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... I was playing AD&D yesterday and one of the characters was in trouble. There is a lot of backstory here, but the short version is that he had just been mistaken by some unsavory characters for his half brother (an ex-character) who had done a lot to piss them off. In the process of defending himself (without using lethal force, which was a nice surprise from the player) he drew the attention of the guards. His guilty conscience kicked in, and he started running. Riprock (OOC): Wait, you've done nothing wrong! You could get out of this by - GM: None of you are there, so let him make his own mistakes. Me (OOC): Quick! Everyone use their Party Telepathy to beam him an idea that doesn't suck!
  4. Re: Do any of you still play 4th edition and FH Circa 1990? My group never played with anything before Fifth Revised, so we'll be using that when I finally start up my FH game.
  5. Re: WWYCD/W:The gift The term "Rolling Dreadnought damage" to be a positive one for once. (Whenever I play Dreadnought my luck seems to vanish. My group started calling it Dreadnought damage during a session where I consistently rolled 30-35 stun on a 12d6 attack. I think the highest I did in the sessions was 45 stun, but that was on a 20d6 move through!)
  6. Re: I need help with math Gideon and Gojira explained the math well, so I'll just recommend that you check out Hero Designer. This nifty little program is an immense help with making characters. It's easy to use and does all the math for you. There used to be a free version with less functionality in the free stuff section, but I can't find it right now. The version they're selling is well worth the price, though.
  7. Re: Looking for a thread There's also 1001 Things Mr Welch is n longer allowed to do in an RPG, but most of the best ones are in the first 250 (although some of the later ones are hilarious.)
  8. Re: Looking for a thread Here's the list of 250 Things Mr Welch Is Not Allowed To Do In Any RPG. There are a lot of variations on the list out there, but this is the one that was posted on here originally.
  9. Re: Malazan Books of the Fallen HERO It's been years since I've read the books, but if memory serves they should be perfect for FH. The warrens are weird, but require something that few game systems deliver: they all provide access to power, but they all do it differently. The Malazan world is one where the magic system is a loose skeleton that the players can design anything in. There is room for pretty much any character concept, no matter how weird it is. I'd like to go into more specific examples, but the only things I can remember off hand would be spoilers for those who haven't finished the series yet (even then, they're probably horribly muddled spoilers). I should really go reread those before I plan my upcoming FH game!
  10. Re: Brick tricks How I did it with Dreadnought (amorphous form brick) is he has 60 STR, but then he also has a multipower of tricks he can do. He lacks the control to apply as much force as he can while also altering the way he hits, all of the Naked Modifiers in the multipower are only on parts of his STR. For example, he has armour piercing or AoE (one hex) on 40 STR as two of the slots. It's a lot of fun to play, gives me a lot of options and doesn't unbalance our game.
  11. Re: What are you playing now? Dreadnought: the second hero system character I ever built, he's an amorphous brick made entirely of nanobots. Can you imagine how sad I was when VVV contained someone who not only had the same powerset and name, but was better than me at it? Metalhead: Teenaged son of two world class superheroes. Got the ability to turn himself into metal from his father, got some music based sonic blasting from his mother. Wants to be a rock star. Pak'Cha (DnD): Ranger from a species of humanoid dragonflies, he's one of the leaders of one of the rebellions against the Illithid empire at the dawn of recorded time. Very fun to play, with an amazing party dynamic.
  12. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... Overheard from a Call of Cthulhu game at a local gaming store. GM: "This isn't Scooby-****ing-Doo! You don't split up!"
  13. Re: How would you do it? Interesting power, to say the least. How I would do it is with a mental entangle, area of effect one hex, affects physical world, trigger (occupying the same hex as someone; activating trigger is an action that takes no time; trigger resets automatically). That way you enter someone's hex while desolidified and the entangle hits them. Since it's AoE one hex it not only hits everyone in the hex but it's nearly impossible to miss with (since your own hex has a DCV of 0). Everyone hit by the power has to take some time to shake off the disorientation (break out of the entangle) before they can act again.
  14. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... We started a Teen Champions campaign tonight. We started with character introductions, which saw my character (a density increase brick/sonic blaster named Metalhead) out fighting Subterranites in the streets of millenium city with a lot of other teenaged heroes in the middle of December. I come face to face with the Subterranite King, and we square off. King: Your people are weak, and we shall- Metalhead: Wait. I've been out here in the freezing cold fighting your people for an hour now. I am tired, I am cold, and I am ****ing pissed. So please, just shut up and let me punch you.
  15. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... Keep in mind that you're talking about an immortal time traveller from another dimension in a champions setting. None of those things lend themselves to characters who stay dead for long!
  16. Re: Yet another character assistance thread You'd also need a second Damage Shield for mental attacks. Put a limitation on the two damage shields "Only up to amount of the initial attack". If all of the reflections are a conscious effort, then put another limitation on them that they only work on attacks he Blocks. If it's just something that happens, give him armour to represent the reflected attack not hurting him, and use one of the (numerous) ways that people have come up with to use Missile Reflection without taking an action (such as with Duplication, Only to Missile Deflect, although I find this clunky)
  17. Re: The Ultimate Roleplayer I'll buy the pizza: Penalty skill levels vs GM disfavour
  18. Re: Your Character/Game Equation My Champions GM once described Dreadnought as Batman + The Hulk + Reed Richards. We have since rewritten the equation as Dreadnought = Iron Man + The Hulk + Reed Richards
  19. Re: Historical Archtypes Brick: Thor, Hercules Metamorph: Loki
  20. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... Anthony: To quote Nietzsche, "There's a hole full of monsters. Don't fall in."
  21. Re: Humans are "Special" Personally, I'm a fan of the approach from the RPG Star Thugs. I'm not a fan of the writer's sense of humour, but he provides some good in-game explanations for genre conventions. One of them is his explanation of why humans are anything special in a galaxy full of species more advanced than us. The reason is because the entire human race is mildly psychic. For almost all of us, it's completely uncontrolled, so that not even we notice, but some poeple manage to harness it. Most species exibit some variation in the type of psychic powers they have, but humans can only learn Ishikendo. Ishikendo is the ability to understand and alter vast and complex systems. The way this manifests in most humans is that we get sudden flashes of inspiration, which are in fact just us tapping into the galactic unconscious and finding a solution that works. It also explains why so many aliens speak English. When humans developed languages, they naturally gravitated towards languages they passively picked up with their minor psychic powers, and English is basically a direct rip off of one of the galaxy's main trade languages.
  22. Re: Character: RAD Interesting, but I predict that someday, he'll end up facing a gadgeteer villain who figured out how Rad's invulnerability works and comes equipped with a RKA with Affects Desolidified. Splat.
  23. Re: Creating a Martial Art The way I'd look at it is how the character looks at the martial art. If they are taking moves that work well together and blending them together, I wouldn't get the KS. However, if the character is specifically trying to create a systemized art, I'd buy the KS. To me, having the KS means that not only do you know how the moves work and fit together, but you know WHY everything works, and can teach others.
