I like that idea.  Mr. Shrike has rules for making a potion master ... add small icons and talismans to the list.  HMMMM!  I think I may have to toss out all my work I have done so far and remake my clerics.

Toubaris (travel, skill, commerce) Potions healing, Potion Endurance, Talisman of glibness (+2 on trading for one day), Talisman of alarm, Oil of movement (rub on shoes get +3 to run and all run is at 0 End)

Themis (Law, Protection, Vengeance) Potion of armour, Flask of protection (break it for a 6/6 FW at you location), Oil of vengeance (rub it on you to get a damage shield)

Ohhhh I can see some possibilities now.  Lesser potions (up to 20 AP), Potions (21 - 40 AP), Greater potions (41 - 60 AP)  Substitute Oil, Philter, Talisman, Icon, Coin, etc  As long as it has limited uses and defined durations (We need the worshippers to come back again to donate)

Marilea (Plants, Earth, Death/milestones)  Dust of crops (CE field to a fruitful field), Talisman of labour (Healing only to offset Birthing), Loam of Healing (Place over wound to HoT),  Greater Talisman of Alarm (Protects for up to a season).

Hear me out.  rather than casting spells a cleric has learned to focus their faith and belief into a more portable form.  Sort of like the old Bard Games alchemists.  They used Force of Will to make Agents react in a certain way to make "..potions, inks, dusts, creams, salves, unguents, elixirs, simple explosives, smoke bombs, agents and reagents, glues, poisons...".  Though some potions are universal Cough Healing Cough, some will be distinctive to the deity in question.

So what do you guys think?

At worst it explains all those potions in circulation!

I have been making Cleric type NPC recently as I was trying to integrate Divine types without going the heal-boy route. So I have twelve deities that control various domains. Yes I was stealing from DND, but then expanded it. Now the Clerics look more like DND sorcerers. Each MP represents a spell level (0-15= L1, 15-30= L2, etc) with a max of 76-90 or L5.

Also each MP has own charges /uses.

Finally, the spell lists will be very limited, only going on the Domains of the deity. Want a Fireball, well unless the deity has the fire domain, NOPE!

So with those ground rules I present Eladrin, Follower of Toubaris, God of Commerce, Skills, Travel, Liberation and Oaths

    That’s good to hear.

For the RSR, you could set it at -0 Limitation if you don’t want to have the roll reduced by the Active Points. That will eat up a bit of your cost savings. You could also leave it at its current value and just house rule that the roll is not modified by Active Points.

You could also set up special perks that offset the minuses, perhaps earned as part of rank among the faithful, or don’t apply minuses for spells that are in the favored portfolio of a deity. Like the healing god doesn’t give any penalties to healing magics they provide, but other portfolios they also provide access to are less favored so have the penalties.

Those are some other ways to give flavor.

For a divine source, I think having a limitation expressed something like “must be in good standing with deity” would be a good limitation to replace the unspecified ones. This shows that they are getting their powers from a divine source.

For a RSR, I like what the Narosia campaign setting used, having a deity as a Contact instead of a skill roll, and that Contact roll functioned as the RSR. There were also Perks that added to the roll for being a favored servant. It gave it a nice flavor that you are drawing upon your patron/matron for magical support.

If you’re trying to cut costs for the larger Active Point multipowers, I suppose you could use your “Good Standing” limitation for them but vary the limitation amount per the structure you are already using for the custom limitation. It would seem to make sense that wielders of higher-powered prayers could be watched more closely by the deity providing the power.

That is part of the System, so it feels weird to not use it, and it helps give me a handle to the NPC.  As a GM this would help me role play the NPC at a session!

When you calculate the cost of the contact keep in mind you are paying for what the contact will do for you, not what it can do.  So, while a church may have access to useful skills and resources and contacts of their own are they going to put those at the disposal of the character?   If not, you don’t have to pay for them.   To a starting character would only have basic access, they are not going to be able to talk to the higher-ranking member or get access to secrets guarded by the church.  The chance of them able to get in touch with someone who can actually help them is going to probably be fairly low.  Sure, you can talk to the local priest all the time, but if he is rarely of any use you don’t need to pay more.  That would probably work out to an 8 or less roll with no other modifiers.  So, it would cost 3 points.

The fringe benefit Priest also cost 3 points so either way would probably work.  The fringe benefit comes with some assumed responsibility and would probably give you a little more in the way of benefits like free shelter, some extra rights, but would require the character do things for them.

Would the Church provide me with free healing right up to bringing me back from the dead, including seeking out my remains should I disappear for an extended period?

Will the Church declare a Holy War if my character is threatened or insulted?

I'd probably pay 15 points for either of those!

Whatever you pick is probably fine. Speaking from my 40+ years of experience as a GM and worldbuilder, I can say your players probably will probably neither notice nor care about your choices for such details... unless they get in the way of a PC getting what the player wants, in which no amount of internal logic will prevent complaining. So don't stress about it.

In fact... it might be more interesting to try this exercise: Write down the domains you want available on slips of paper, Put the slips in a bag and shake them up. Pull out three domains at random. See if you can make up a god for that set of domains, no matter how deranged the combination may seem. With a little work, you can probably come up with a myth to justify why the same god deals with, I don't know, Death, Light, and Travel.

I also recommend the World Creation Superdrafts threads in the Non-Gaming Discussion forum. A game of competitive shared world construction, in which each participant takes the role of one of the gods making that world. There've been six so far, I think, in which people came up with amazingly creative gods In the last one, I went rather conventional with a God of Love; but other people produced gods of Metal, Colors, Moons, Doors, and a truly terrifying God of Tyranny -- among others. I guarantee these will broaden your horizons when it comes to designing gods.

EDIT: Here's the link to the last one. Enjoy.
