  1. I've seen those kinds of stories from time to time over the years so I'm more than a little cynical (during Reagan, W. Bush, pre-Trump, and mid-Trump). But this is the first time I've seen it after the Republicans kicked a prominent Republican out of a leadership post because she refused to give silent consent, or vocal support, to an insurrectionist. So maybe they're highly motivated into actual action rather than only motivated to voice an idle threat. Their letter is supposed to come out later today. If it gives the Republican party a definite deadline (such as August 1st or June 30th) and a list of specific requirements it must meet in order to keep them in the party, then I'll take their threat as being serious (rather than being hot air). I'll keep my fingers crossed.
  2. I'd really like them to work something like that into the storyline. Make it more of "well, that was a really convenient place to hide the Stone because it was inside of one of the Sorcerer Supreme's most powerful tools that he'd never leave behind anyway". No one would question why he had the Eye (secretly the stone) with him all the time: it's too useful to leave behind. And few people would think of looking inside a mystical tool for an Infinity Stone.
  3. It was a really annoying way to depict the eye. (Almost as bad as having an Infinity Stone animating the Vision.) We don't know that the Eye isn't magical without the Time Stone. It is apparently an ancient non-technological artifact and it's been heavily implied that it was created by a mystic in order to hold an Infinity Stone. We know that something like the Cube would just melt through ordinary material like steel (as seen at the end of the first Captain America movie) rather than being held by it. The Eye could easily have multiple enchantments upon it which have nothing to do with time manipulation. (For example, I could see it being already being designed to be unbreakable and undetectable without stretching my imagination. The storage space inside could perhaps be larger than it appears so if nothing else, it might have an oxygen supply.) Maybe it could be newly enchanted to do something else powerful since it no longer has to use its magic to contain the power of the Time Stone. Or perhaps it could have picked up some of the properties of the Infinity Stone because it was the repository for one apparently for a very long time.
  4. We were literally doing it the wrong way: horizontal rather than vertical.
  5. Listening to analysis of this on MSNBC, they pointed out there was only one four star and only 3-4 three star generals signing the letter. So it was mostly lower tier people rather than those who would have had regular contact with a senator or president. They also pointed out that most of them hadn't actually served in more than a decade. So they didn't have recent experience with what the military has been going through with the never-ending deployment and little to no experience dealing with Trump as commander-in-chief. Anyway... There's not a firm number of retired generals and admirals available to the general public so as to make it easy to see if 124 of them is a significant number. Back from 2006, I found this article which estimated that at the time there was around 4700 retired generals. https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2006/04/how-many-retired-generals-are-there.html (There were multiple reports of a wave of retirements from generals who didn't want to take orders from the Amateur-in-Chief who claimed he was smarter than all the generals but let's ignore that for the purposes of making an informed guess.) The retired admirals are listed on the navy website mixed in with active duty admirals here: https://www.navy.mil/Leadership/Biographies/ An intrepid reporter went through the entire list and claims he counted more than 250 retired admirals but doesn't say exactly how many. https://www.reference.com/world-view/can-list-retired-united-states-navy-admirals-found-b229c1dfeecdf113 So adding the retired admirals and retired generals together, there's maybe 5000 of them total. That'd make it 2.48% of all retired admirals and generals signed the letter.
  6. Apparently we've been doing wind power the wrong way.... https://scitechdaily.com/more-compact-and-efficient-vertical-turbines-could-be-the-future-for-wind-farms/#:~:text=New research from Oxford Brookes, performance by up to 15%.
  7. I'd have suspected the Chrome update was the sole culprit if I'd done the update while browsing this site. But I was clicking through the forums and literally between one click and the next, the site changed. Are there any tech gurus on the forum who might know how to convince my computer/browser that my laptop isn't a mobile device so that it'll once again load the correct version of the website? Or maybe uninstall the Chrome update to revert back to their previous version? Honestly changing browsers away from Chrome to something else isn't an option a good option. I started using Chrome because other browsers weren't handling other websites well and kept crashing. And apparently my laptop can't handle running Chrome plus another browser without them both malfunctioning. edit: tried setting Chrome back to it's original settings. No effect on the problem I'm having (but it was a huge time suck as doing that logged me out of every website that I use for work in the background).
  8. Thanks for the response. It was working fine until around 12:20 a.m. yesterday when between one click and the next in the General Discussion forum, the whole layout of the site changed with a lot of site features being deleted. This seems to be the only site I frequent that changed. It looks like maybe it suddenly after years decided my desktop is a mobile and is using the mobile version instead? If that's the case, I have no clue as to how to change it back. I've done everything I know how to do except completely delete Chrome and download it again. Maybe that's my next step. Again, thanks for the response.
  9. I've never seen him try to park it in a cannon.
  10. Yeah, it appears my crappy experience is only on Chrome which has taken away such features as: Home > Forums > Other Forums > Non-Gaming Discussion links at the top and bottom of the page The notification button at the top of the page is now hidden inside the menu button. and the links across the top of the page are missing for News Browse Clubs Forums Downloads Online Users Leaderboard Activity Store Support Social Media Gift Cards This would appear to be a major problem since there's no way any longer to access the store anymore from Chrome or to even know that sections like the store or the downloads section even exist. @Simon @Hermit Not sure who should know about this so I just tagged you both.

    Micronauts!

Acroyear, Time Traveler (not Commander Rann), Biotron, and Baron Karza aren't Marvel properties but rather are part of the original Mego toy line. Commander Rann (who is Time Traveler but not in the trademarked sense), Marionette, and Bug are original Marvel Characters. But I think Bug is the only one who still regularly shows up in comics.
  12. I had a friend a couple of decades back who lived in the Netherlands and couldn't understand why someone who lived in, say, the Dallas area couldn't easily get to the Houston area since it was in the same state. Of course he was used to tiny Europe and being able to get to anywhere in Europe with a Eurail pass. So I measured the longest end to end section of the Netherlands and started using that as my standard unit of measurement which I called "The Netherlands". Dallas is many "The Netherlands" distant from Houston. After I did that, he was annoyed but had a more instinctive understanding of the distances involved. And in discussions of "why doesn't the US have an equivalent to Eurail so that you can go anywhere in the country on the train", I started pointing out that Amsterdam is closer to Baghdad than Miami is to Seattle.
  13. Did they just change the site again so that it's a whole lot less user-friendly? I can no longer navigate from one forum to another without going through a series of menus and several other clunky changes.
  14. Judge orders release of Trump obstruction memo, accuses Barr of being 'disingenuous' https://thehill.com/regulation/551755-judge-orders-release-of-trump-obstruction-memo-accuses-barr-of-being-disingenuous Jackson, who was appointed to the federal district court in Washington, D.C., by former President Obama, wrote in a scathing 41-page decision that "not only was the Attorney General being disingenuous then, but DOJ has been disingenuous to this Court with respect to the existence of a decision-making process that should be shielded by the deliberative process privilege." "The agency’s redactions and incomplete explanations obfuscate the true purpose of the memorandum, and the excised portions belie the notion that it fell to the Attorney General to make a prosecution decision or that any such decision was on the table at any time," she added. (So basically the memo didn't say that Trump was cleared by the DoJ of accusations of obstruction following the Mueller investigation...as AG Barr said it did.)
  15. They're not going to move Peter through high school and college fast enough for him to learn to be a world-class tech/science guru. Does this list of skills sound like Peter: Computer Programming Criminology Cryptography Demolitions Electronics Forensic Medicine Inventor Mechanics Navigation Security Systems Systems Operation Weaponsmith Plus this (partial) list of sciences: Aeronautics Architecture Astronomy Astrophysics Biophysics Chemistry Computer Design Cybernetics Dimensional Physics Electronics Engineering Exobiology Genetics High Energy Physics Mathematics Mechanical Engineering Metallurgy Physics Subatomic Physics Robotics Vehicle Engineering Plus enough Wealth to be able to casually build the things he dreams up, and perhaps give those things away, without having to worry about the expense. That's what Reed brings to the table but which Peter, for the most part, doesn't. Well, she disappeared in the Snap. Prior to that, she lived on another continent, in an obscure country, in a city which was hidden behind an energy shield, and was overprotected by a smothering older brother.
  16. The word "conservative" has no meaning in American politics anymore since it has multiple factions with diametrically-opposed ideologies trying to claim the label. In the past when participating in an attempt to form a viable nationwide 3rd party, I suggested the name White Hats. In the old westerns, you could tell the good guys from the bad guys because the bad guys wore white hats. And the good guy would never lie or shade the truth while wearing his hat, he'd take it off and hold it in his hands while speaking. Ronald Reagan was also famous for wearing a white hat when puttering around his ranch while president. So that name is a nice call back to both images. If she does leave the party and form a separate caucus, I'd prefer for that caucus to not de facto caucus with the Republicans. It's OK to be on the same side of an issue when that seems appropriate or to reach across the aisle to work with a Republican on an individual basis. But there shouldn't be "we're going to promote Republicans, we're just protesting enough to give some political cover to ourselves".
  17. For me it isn't that they burned up their good franchises but that their best franchises aren't part of Phase 4 but will be Phase 5 or later: X-Men and the Fantastic Four. I want to see what Feige does with the FF. They're explorers as much as heroes so they can help fill out a lot of the unexplored portions of the comic book universe. In the comic books, the Thing does a lot of guest appearances. SFX expense probably wouldn't allow for that. But they could easily have Reed Richards be the superhero tech consultant in any movie. Or have heroes drop by the Baxter Building looking for assistance only to find that no one is home.
  18. I like the main characters. They're not "obvious" so there's layers of motivations and background being revealed each episode. And having ladies as the main characters in an era when ladies didn't have equal rights or substantial freedoms is interesting (particularly because the show isn't being preachy about it not being RIGHT but is just dealing with it as part of the environment). Do you understand the origin story of Ms. True at all? There's talk about her being "left behind" which seems to be a point of trauma for her. There's talk about her having been in a war (before WWI). We know she tried to drown herself (whether voluntarily or involuntarily). There's also oblique references about her knowing (apparently beyond doubt) that the future will be better but she apparently has no power to foresee the distant future. I thought maybe she was supposed to be on the mysterious skyship when it left. My wife thinks that it's a simple explanation like a loved one went off to war and was killed. And maybe she lived in the war zone. (Boer War? India?) Opinions?
  19. If SF doesn't trade up and snag one of the top QB's, I think there's a good chance that there could have been a free-for-all of teams trying to trade up to get one of the available QB's. Having one team trade up to get a QB stabilized the "tradeup for QB" market. If it hadn't been SF trading up, it would have been someone else. And if it'd been one other team, there could easily have been other teams trying to trade up, which might have locked SF out of getting any of the top QB's. Sure that might have screwed over the Pats as well but making sure that happens not SF's goal. SF think they still have the pieces NOW to be a top contender if they have a healthy QB. Let's say Mac Jones had fallen to them at #12. Does a classic college pocket passer learn the SF system and be ready to lead them on a Super Bowl run this year if Garoppolo doesn't pan out? Lance played in a more pro-style system in college, is supposedly smarter, and has the stronger arm. They think he can lead them now if necessary. They weren't so sure about their other choices. The franchise is looking for a Super Bowl win, rather than having a team with a higher average win rate over the next six years.
  20. I don't think sitting with Garoppolo, who was decidedly average in 2020, was a viable option. 2016 torn ligament in his throwing shoulder, 2018 torn ACL in his left knee ended his season in September, and two ankle injuries in 2020 keeping him off the field most of the season. In four years with SF, he's had one year (2019) that he was undeniably "healthy". Well, they felt they needed a QB, there was a QB who they thought would fit perfectly into their system, and that was the deal they could make. I never like overpaying. Or paying. Or making an even trade. But sometimes you have to. If Garoppolo comes out next season and passes for 4000 yards and 27 TDs like he did in 2019, the trade to get the draft pick looks terrible. But I don't think there's a GM or coach in the league who expects that to happen.
  21. They filled needs (with negligible additional cost to themselves) and got a potential Hall-of-Famer without additional costs to themselves. That sounds like a B-. If they'd taken a potential Hall of Fame QB then filled holes without additional costs, it would have been an A (plus or minus). With the league going further incrementally pass-crazy, a top QB is several steps ahead of a top anything-else unless your team is set for QB for more than the next three years. Having needs without filling them, reaching for bad players, paying way too much for a good player so that it wrecks the rest of your draft, having traded away this year's draft picks for players in previous years who didn't work out...that's getting down into C, D, or F territory. 2 cents
  22. If the laws were sane, you wouldn't have to marry someone in order to easily become financially and legally responsible for them. < grumble, grumble >
  23. He needs to explain to the horse how vulnerable he's become to attacks from the sides.
  24. Sounds like the kind of thing I'd do if I didn't have a wife who made me behave ethically.
