  1. I will note that The American Revolution was...in effect....doing exactly what people seem to be railing against now. It's easy to support the status quo when it either benefits you or harms you minimally in comparison to others. The system we have in place has been corrupted by those in power and continues to become more corrupt on a daily basis. And...let's be realistic...if there are no consequences for the harm our current system causes, why would those in power ever change it willingly? If the threat of violence is off the table, what other alternatives are there? Work within a system that is so controlled by big wealth that there's no chance of significant change in a dozen lifetimes? Vote? We're seeing the answer to that. Gerrymander voting into irrelevance. Those in power LOVE peaceful protests....because they can safely ignore them. Protests without the threat of consequences is like a shark without teeth. Strikes are a potential middle ground, but again...our system has effectively weakened organized labor for decades and it's only now starting to have any semblance of a recovery. I'm not advocating violence. I abhor it. But....like the French and Russian Revolutions of previous eras, I can't see the establishment giving up any kind of power without some type of forceful coercion.

Spider-Man making over a billion world wide draws a pretty stark comparison between it and the previous three MCU films.  Some characters are just more liked, and they also went with a more reliable cast and crew for this one as well.  The formula is this:

    1) Pick a director who loves the material and is an established quality

    2) Cast it with great talent

    3) Write a solid, enjoyable story that honors the source material and the fans

    4) Focus on entertainment, not checking off special identity and narrative boxes

When they stray from this, they stumble.  When they stick to it, they succeed.  All the other excuses and explanations offered fall short.

Oh, it also helps if you stick with beloved, time-tested characters.

Well...we enjoyed Shang Chi and Eternals too. "shrugs"

    Justifications to take the vaccine....

    Ethically....it saves lives.

    Scientifically....statistically proven to save lives.

    Logically.....it saves lives.

Forgive the flippancy of my response, but as I'm celebrating my first Christmas without my only sibling....my tolerance for anti vaxx rhetoric is nonexistent.

  4. From my FB review....

Movie review: Spider-man: No Way Home (2021). In the interest of preventing spoilers, I'll only be referring to elements of the film that are obvious from the trailers. In this third installment, Peter Parker is dealing with the aftermath of having his identity revealed in the last movie. Dr. Strange tries to help and all hell breaks loose. Now there are some plot threads that don't quite add up and a few annoying bits, but the sheer amount of fan service in this film is just so satisfying. The film is also generally well scripted and shot. The first fight sequence is the best IMO, but there's a lot to love throughout. Special props to the returning villain actors who are given the opportunity to revisit and revitalize some of their iconic roles. Alfred Molina is particularly good. There are two post credit sequences (though one of them is more or less a trailer for an upcoming film). I'm giving it an A. Definitely one of the better MCU movies and well worth seeing.
