Savinien
Re: Longest Running Thread EVER So... Near the end of that video clip, there is a kid in the snake and people yell, "He's behind you!" Just as the kid turns around, a guy comes running up and shoots him a couple of times. I'm the guy that ran past shooting him.
archermoo
Re: Longest Running Thread EVER This seemed a good place to post this. The Friday before the 4th I got a response from one of the jobs that I've applied for, asking for me to send a complete copy of my resume 'cause their system seemed to have eaten part of it, and asking when I'd be available for a phone interview. We went back and forth via e-mail (and a couple of voicemails), resulting in me getting her pointed to my on-line resume (here if you're interested) and set up for an interview at 10:00 the following (Saturday) morning. Next day, at 10:20 I left her a voicemail at her office number (not having really expected her to be there, assuming she would be calling me from home) and then sent an e-mail trying to figure out what was up. No response, or anything else from her, the rest of the day. On Monday I sent another e-mail trying to find out what was up, which also got no response. Not wanting to be a bore about it, I didn't send anything else. Until this afternoon. Over the weekend I decided that if I hadn't heard anything by today, I'd send one more query and then if that still got no response I'd give it up. I can handle rejection, I can handle a complete lack of response. But the respond and then nothing was odd to me, and I wasn't real sure how to handle it. To my surprise, 20 minutes later I got a response that basically said that the snafu with the phone call was her fault and then asking when I would be available for the phone interview. So I've got another one set up for tomorrow evening. We'll see how it goes...

Cancer
Re: Longest Running Thread EVER ... the snafu with the phone call was her fault ... So, if you get this job, will you have to work with her? This sort of thing can be valuable distant early warning data.
Bazza
Re: Longest Running Thread EVER ... Copy What You Like (more) When I was in high school I spent a lot of time imitating bad writers. What we studied in English classes was mostly fiction, so I assumed that was the highest form of writing. Mistake number one. The stories that seemed to be most admired were ones in which people suffered in complicated ways. Anything funny or gripping was ipso facto suspect, unless it was old enough to be hard to understand, like Shakespeare or Chaucer. Mistake number two. The ideal medium seemed the short story, which I've since learned had quite a brief life, roughly coincident with the peak of magazine publishing. But since their size made them perfect for study in high school classes, we read a lot of them, which gave us the impression the short story was flourishing. Mistake number three. And because they were so short, nothing really had to happen; you could just show a randomly truncated slice of life, and that was considered advanced. Mistake number four. The result was that I wrote a lot of stories in which nothing happened except that someone was unhappy in a way that seemed deep.
