CrosshairCollie
I'm trying to get my HERO mojo back, and I'm considering using Quirks (with thanks to keyes_bill showing me how the concept works), but to help 'sell' the idea to the players, I'd like to give them some examples. I'm lifting keyes_bill's Teen Titans ones, but not everybody's seen Teen Titans and my personal span of entertainment choices is somewhat ... limited. So, I ask the HERO folks out there who've seen more than I have for help. In particular, good examples from anime (even if he hasn't seen it, I guarantee he's heard of it) and Buffy/Angel/Firefly would be ideal, since we have at least one fan of both of those in the group. Possibly anythying from newer comics, since I haven't bought a new one in close to a decade. However, anything from something even remotely popular would be very helpful, and I offer my thanks in advance. My list thus far (excepting keyes_bill's TT list): Captain Kirk: Speaks ... in ... OddRhythms Captain Picard: Catchphrases "Engage" and "Make It So" Dr. McCoy: Catchphrase "I'm a doctor, not a ..." Optimus Primal (Beast Wars): Uses 'Prime' in place of 'wonderful', even sarcastically Death's Head (comics): Talks to himself constantly, frequently ends sentences in "Yes?", "No?", "Right?" or "Eh?" Tommy Oliver (Power Rangers): Always wears one article of clothing matching his Ranger Color at the time, Always says "Aw, man" when recieving bad news Numbuh 5 (Codename: Kids Next Door): Loves her hat, frequently refers to herself in the third person Pavel Chekov: Catchphrase "It's a Russian Inwention"
Hermit
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics From M*A*S*H* Charles Emmerson Winchester III: Classical Music is his sanctuary Insists on being called "Charles", hates Charlie, Chuck, etc Whistles classical music when he's got a bad hand in poker Protective of those that remind him of his sister (He once ripped some soldiers a new one for mocking a stutterer) ............ Mind you, all the above might be covered under a broader psych, but you can certainly use quirks to play with it instead
ParagonAlpha
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics From Quantum Leap: Sam Beckett: Always says "Oh Boy" when finding out where he leaps. Buffyverse: Angel: Dresses in black clothes Spike: Billy-Idol rip off. (actually there's a funny story about that...nevermind) Willow: looks like a Librarian (1st 4 seasons) Buffy: Fashionable Slayage Oz: Plays is a garage band. Drives a styling van. Firefly: Jayne: Really close to his weapons. "I call her Vera." Shepard Book: Way to much hair. River: No power in the 'Verse can stop me. These suck but hopefully they spark more. sinanju
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics Firefly: Jayne: Really close to his weapons. "I call her Vera." Shepard Book: Way to much hair. River: No power in the 'Verse can stop me. More Firefly: River: "Also? I can kill you with my brain." Everyone: Cursing in Chinese Everone: "Shiny!" (equivalent of "Neat!" or "Cool!")
SKJAM!
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics From the Sailor Moon series: Moon: Heavy sleeper, likes video games, loves ice cream. Mercury: Brings a book everywhere, just in case she gets bored. Is mildly far-sighted and uses reading glasses. Mars: Likes manga; wishes her father spent more time with her. Jupiter: Every handsome boy reminds her of her old boyfriend; acts extra-domestic to soften her "big and strong" image. Venus: Thinks she's a matchmaker, messes up cliche sayings/makes malapropisms. Tuxedo Kamen/Mask: Often dresses formally and carries roses even in Secret ID; acts older than he is.
death tribble
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics Batman and Robin TV series: Neither use guns. That is a quirk or a lim. Talks in cliches. 'You fiends !' Robin makes spectacular quotes when excited or emotional 'Holy Unreasonable Fire Escape !'
Supreme
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics Ash from the "Evil Dead" movies: Says things like "Groovy" and "Gimme some sugar." In the Wild Cards novels they had a character named Cap'n Trips who was stuck in the 60's in terms of personal culture. He transformed into other super-heroes, one of whom was "Jumpin' Jack Flash" who was stuck in the 70's (wore jumpsuits with gold-chains and call every woman "baby"). Haven Walkur
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics Some of these might quirks might spill over into full-fledged character traits, but that would all be in how you played them. Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop: Lousy luck when gambling. She's an excellent gambler, but her luck always lets her down. Smokes like a chimney. Messy and disorganized. Always after the big bucks. Selfish. Self-confident. Obnoxious. Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop: Tends to be a "mother hen" towards his friends Generous Hurt when his cooking is criticized Grows and trims bonsai plants Likes animals and children Gruff when embarrassed Loyal Doesn't talk about his days as a cop Spike Speigel from Cowboy Bebop Smokes like a chimney Has attitude as an art form Claims (untruthfully) not to like animals Teases Jet about his cooking Often hints at his 'tragic, romantic' past Often bemoans his fate Unlucky Selfish Single-minded Does casual conjuring tricks with small items
Haven Walkur
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics Miroku the Amorous Monk from Inuyasha: Tries to bed every attractive woman he meets Always uses the same pickup line: "Will you be the mother of my child?" Sure his Wind Tunnel power will someday consume him Kogome from Inuyasha: Drags her bicycle around everywhere Attracted to Inuyasha but denies it Change of pace here from the anime, but I'll keep it "classic" Columbo from TV show Columbo: Dresses like a bum Always seems half-asleep Gil Grissom from CSI Loves insects Knows sign language Perfectionist Says odd things in social situations: Example (to someone he's just met, who has an extra finger on one hand): "Did you know duplication of the middle finger is the rarest form of polydactyly? Less than X number of people worldwide have that condition." Uncomfortable with strong emotions, his own or others'
Dr. Anomaly
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics A couple more Star Trek-related ones: Scotty: Will start a bar fight over his beloved ship being insulted, but not over his captain being insulted. The "Picard Manuever": Every time Picard sits down, he gives a short, double-handed jerk to the bottom of his shirt to smarten it up and remove any folds or wrinkles. Stargate: Col. O'Neill: Pretends to be as thick as two short planks...but his hobbies are astronomy & (to a lesser extent) basic cosmology. You don't have those as hobbies if you're lacking in the brains department. Stargate: Atlantis Dr. McKay: Almost always snacking; being scared in particular seems to make him hungry. He never seems to gain any weight, though, despite being almost constantly scared & nervous -- perhaps he burns the calories off because of his nervous agitation. Cancer
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics Rorschach of The Watchmen made very frequent non-word vocalizations, probably throat-clearing ("*hrm*"). SKJAM!
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics Dr. Octopus (at least at some points in the comics): Smokes cigars, likes to appear cultured, dresses up when he gets the chance. Super Squirrel
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics My favorite quirk to date that I have played is Palon in The Savage Earth. AmadanNaBriona
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics An example that I used for a werewolf character (who started life as a wolf, rather than a human)... I stole a page from David Eddings Belgariad and always talked in 3rd person... as in... "One wishes to know why the female is acting that way?" Of course, I also spent a bunch of time practicing my canine/lupine body language... I got a bit obsessive with that characterization
SKJAM!
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics From Saint Seiya: Seiya plays Spanish guitar. Surprisingly well. Hyoga has a thing for blonde girls. (It's related to his "obsessed with his mother" Psych Lim, but in itself is just a quirk.) Shun has green hair. It's not really Distinctive Features, since no one ever reacts to it, but it is a plot point. And from the Left Behind books: Rayford Steele thinks his prematurely grey hair makes him look "distinguished."

You don't have those as hobbies if you're lacking in the brains department. Data and T'lek: Formal (refers to people by rank, title, and last name, even longtime friends.) Dr.Jackson: Believes in the best of people (not blindly trusting, but more likely to consider an attack by a new people is a misunderstanding than an act of aggression) Data and Carter: Spouts off technobabble at the drop of a hat Tom Paris: Enjoys simple pleasures, takes hobbies seriously (who else would spend hours getting every detail right of an old theater to show an episode of MST3K?) Captian Janeway: Coffee addict Captian Sisko: Migrating hair (on the top of his head in the first epsiode, down on his chin in the last) 7 of 9: Unaware of how her appearance can effect others General George Hammon: Uses "red phone" as a threat Plain Simple Garak: Courteous even to people he hates
SKJAM!
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics Yu-Gi-Oh! (Mostly from the manga, as the animated version cut most of the personal life stuff). Yugi: Wears his school uniform habitually, but also likes leather and buckles; borrows softcore porn from Jonouchi; Bruce Lee fan. Jonouchi (Joey): Likes porn; good at building models from kits; must have the most fashionable sneakers. Honda (Tristan): Likes porn; has an unspayed dog; gun fancier Anzu (Tea): Wants to be a dancer; wears clothes that show off her legs; has very few female friends. Bakura: Hand-modifies miniatures for his role-playing campaigns; prefers to wear his hair long; is not interested in girls (but there's no evidence he's gay, either.) Kaiba: Wears a picture of his brother Mokuba around his neck in a card-shaped locket, his one concession to sentimentality. (Mokuba has the other half of the picture in his locket.); Likes to wear white. Mai: Wears a lot of perfume; dresses slutty to distract her opponents; carries extra supplies "just in case". Black Rose
Re: Needed: Quirks from TV/Movies/Comics And considering the type of "porn" they'd be looking at (cheesecake with a side of T&A), I doubt it would be all that bad if we did. I could be wrong, but I have a feeling that the really icky-bad smut in Japan is mostly read by sarariman - salarymen - and are only occasionally seen by your typical teenager. Much like reading your dad's Playboy as a kid.
