Lucius
I'm working on a character for a "crazy anime/ wild martial arts" style game. My character's name and theme is "Oni Ni Kanabo" which means literally something like "Ogre with a big iron club" and is also an exression that means "overkill." He's an enthusiastic character who tends to go overboard on things, and ALSO has the ability to literally become the embodiment of overkill, an Oni Ni Kanabo. Naturally, I am trying to create an appropriate martial art. I don't think I need much help with the mechanics, but I may need some appropriately flowery, "over the top" names for the manuevers. I'm assuming each mechanical manuever will have several names depending on circumstance: For example Running Stroke "Counter Weakness with Strength." Named after Sun Tzu's words of advice, this is for using the move when standing still, or not moving far 'The Charging Bull" When making a half or full move. "Death from Above" when superleaping. "The Falling Tree" or "The Avalanche" when leaping down, or (given his size in Oni form) when towering over his opponent and striking. Dodge "Counter Strength with Absence." Again, named after Sun Tzu's advice. "Evasion of the Tengu" (he is supposed to have learned some of his arts from Tengu) "Become the Void." Block "An Oni Laughs at Puny Mortal Blows" when doing a "chin block" type block. "To Dam the River" Escape "You Can't Grasp the Wind." (Now I think of it, the Dodge names work here too....) Disarm "You Didn't Need That" Takeaway "I Need That" "Domo Arragoto" I also need a name for a Throw And I would be happy at any other suggested names or manuevers! Lucius Alexander The palindromedary is out of ideas.
Bloodstone
Re: Wild Martial Arts Move Names I also need a name for a Throw "Here I am, Rock You Like A Huricane" No, that would just be silly...
Arac-4105
Re: Wild Martial Arts Move Names Throw: "Ground's Introduction" or variant on that theme Takeaway: "Shouldn't Play With Knives" Just my $0.

Lucius
Re: Wild Martial Arts Move Names "Here I am, Rock You Like A Huricane" No, that would just be silly... Silly is not necessarily bad for this. tkdguy, thanks for the resource, I'll check it out later. Lucius Alexander The silly palindromedary still wonders when I'm going to design a palindromedary martial art.
Lucius
Re: Wild Martial Arts Move Names A bit more background - The character is Human, but has "fused" with an Oni in a way that enables him to take an Oni form - and an even more powerful "Super-Oni" form for short periods. He has also associated with, and learned from, Tengu. The art will be usable bare handed, with clubs, and with swords, so sometimes the name of the manuever may change depending on weapon (or the lack of it.) Lucius Alexander The palindromedary is at two with itself
CourtFool
Re: Wild Martial Arts Move Names Assuming Oni translates to Ogre Running Stroke "Oni Crush" Dodge "Miss Oni" Block "Oni Block" Escape "Miss Oni" Disarm "Oni Take" Throw "Oni Throw" More 'Monkey Grabs Snake' style The Rushing Bull (oops, you already have this one) The Grashopper Leaps Away The Monkey Steals the Coconut Discarded, the Prey Falls
pinecone
Re: Wild Martial Arts Move Names "Moon touches the mountain" Throw? Running stroke? " Storm of anvils!" rapid strike? "The Falling Tree" or "The Avalanche" when leaping down, or (given his size in Oni form) when towering over his opponent and striking. "Evasion of the Tengu" (he is supposed to have learned some of his arts from Tengu) "Become the Void." I like "Become the Void" How about: Flight of the Tengu or: The flock that scatters Block "An Oni Laughs at Puny Mortal Blows" when doing a "chin block" type block. "To Dam the River" Irresistable Wall Escape "You Can't Grasp the Wind." (Now I think of it, the Dodge names work here too....) He's a big strong guy, so I'm assuming he'll use brute force to escape: "Bursting the Chain" "Breaking the bonds" Or something along those lines. Lucius
Re: Wild Martial Arts Move Names Interesting concept. Thank you. I am still ironing out the origin story, but it is definitely going to involve becoming "fused' with the spirit of an Oni in a magical accident as a result of his usual tendency to go at things full throttle... Crashing Wave (when using Running Stroke against multiple opponents) I like "Become the Void" How about: Flight of the Tengu or: The flock that scatters These are good, especially "Crashing Wave." The more I think about it, "The Flock Scatters" sounds good too. Irresistable Wall He's a big strong guy, so I'm assuming he'll use brute force to escape: "Bursting the Chain" "Breaking the bonds" Or something along those lines. "Swatting Flies" "Grasp the Stinger" I have this image of the oni as a dangerous, sometimes hostile creature, but also as something more attuned to natural and spiritual realities; "in touch with the Tao" so to speak. To some of those who referenced the fact the word can be translated "Ogre" I will point out that the oni was (if I'm not mistaken) the inspiration for the D&D monster the Ogre Mage. So where possible, rather than an expression like "Irresistable Wall" I think I'll use "Immovable Mountain." But thanks, you put me on the track for thinking of that. Also, thank you for helping me cast the "Escape" move in terms of being an unrestrainable force; I may use your suggestions but I am inclining towards "River Breaks the Dam." Lucius Alexander The palindromedary suggests I look up some Japanese geographical features and even include mountains and rivers by name.... Susano
Re: Wild Martial Arts Move Names I have this image of the oni as a dangerous' date=' sometimes hostile creature, but also as something more attuned to natural and spiritual realities; "in touch with the Tao" so to speak. To some of those who referenced the fact the word can be translated "Ogre" I will point out that the oni was (if I'm not mistaken) the inspiration for the D&D monster the [i']Ogre Mage[/i]. Ogre Magi, yes. Oni are demons, sent from Yomi (hell) to trouble the living. Their normal duty is to guard dead souls and to punish sinners, but then tend to get carried away and become bandits and the like, stealing food, drink, and women. They can be smart and cunning, but tend to drink to much and fall prey to tricks and disguises. They are powerful, strong warriors, and a single oni can be a match for several samurai. If an oni names his techniques, he might use very grandiose names ("Smashing The Mountain Into The Sea") in order to make himself look more powerful or important. Or you might use more basic terms ("Yama [mountain] Stance" for Root). See ABII for more Oni and such like.

Rapier
Re: Wild Martial Arts Move Names I have a villainous group, "The Brothers Grimm," named after characters from legend. Rumplestiltskin has a Martial Throw called "Throw 'Em in the Well!" All Martial Maneuvers should be named after a theme. I've had Animal 'Artists' with things like Monkey Picks Peach (OUCH!), Skunk Gets Scared, Mule Doesn't Wanna, Lion Bats Meerkat, Poochie Just Pooed and Beaver Chews Wood. Go with a theme and RUN WITH IT!
