Re: Foods for those that just don't care anymore

They couldn't get away with the tobacco in Oregon' date=' where all restaurants and most workplaces are required by law to be smoke-free. This was in response to situations like non-smoking waitresses at bars developing lung cancer from decades of heavy second-hand smoke.[/quote']

Several years ago, a group of folks got a smoking ban placed on the local ballots. It banned smoking in places that served food, unless they were classified as a casino. A rival group decided that the best way to fight this was to place their own weaker smoking ban on the same ballots, thinking that the confusion would mean the first wouldn't pass. But since these were separate ballot measures, both passed, with the stronger one taking precedence. Many local taverns fought the new law, though a few embraced it. Ichobod's, for example, installed glass partitions and an independent air system for the restaurant, with "to go" service for those who wanted food in the bar. Other bars, without the dedicated space for that solution, instead provided menus for local restaurants offering delivery. Some added smoking areas outside. And a few decided to ignore the law, and eat any fines that resulted. In the meantime, several larger chains of taverns with slot machines managed to get the law weakened enough so that they would fall under the casino designation* and could allow smoking and serve food. I haven't been to the Heart Attack Grill, but I'm guessing that they have outside tables for smokers.

*Which ended up biting one of the companies in the a** after big casino competitors got the NV Gaming Control Board to consider requiring certain amenities, like a kitchen open a certain number of hours, a restaurant of a certain size, and a floor plan of a certain square footage, and to make the requirements retroactively apply.

Re: Foods for those that just don't care anymore

Yesterday, i went to explore the local mall for the first time. I found a candy store that was going out of business. Everything was 75% off.

I left with two pounds of bulk candy for $6, and that was pretty restrained. I got a lot of gummy things (been on a real gummy bears kick lately) and some imitation gourmet jelly beans. Bean flavors include French vanilla and Strawberry Cheesecake. I'm not a big jelly bean eater (since the Jelly Bean Incident of Easter '79) but these are different enough to try.

I think this is actually the second time I found a candy store just as it was going out of business.

So are you the Grim Reaper for candy stores?

Earlier in the month, they'll have this...

More soda exploration! Today I'm having the ginger ale with bits of ginger in it from oogave.

This is really good! The ginger is stronger and spicier than other ales. The smell is strong, and the flavor is reminiscent of really good ginger snap cookies. Not too sweet like the extra dry from GuS. The bits of ginger in the bottle are very small and very few, so it's not like a suspension or a bubble tea. Definite thumbs up. The company has some other great sounding flavors, too. I need to hunt down the vanilla cream, and I'm told the watermelon cream (!) is amazing.

Re: Foods for those that just don't care anymore

An online friend has sent me two packets of Cincinnati CHili spice mix, something I've wanted to try for a long time.

I find the directions a bit odd:

1: Mix the spices with six cups of water and a can of tomato paste.

2. Stir in a pound to a pound and a half of ground beef. Do not brown it first.

3. Beat everything together with a fork.

4. Boil it up, turn down the heat, and let it simmer on a slow boil for an hour to ninety minutes.

When it's thick enough for your taste, serve it over spaghetti or dish it out and let it sit in the fridge for a day or two before heating it up and pouring it on top of spaghetti. Top with thinly shredded cheddar.

It's the way the beef is handled that bothers me. I've always browned ground beef whenever I've used it. Now I am apparently meant to simply boil it, fat and all. They do specify lean ground beef, but still....

That seems odd to me too' date=' though the boiling time's about 2-3x what I normally use for chili so at least the meat should be safe to eat. Does seem like it would result in greasier chili though.[/quote']

Well, this is the sort of chili they serve in Cincinnati and southern Ohio. It's hard to find anywhere else. There is some dispute on whether it's a good idea to skim off the fat; some prefer to, while others call it "pure flavor" and stir it back in. In any case, I am told the flavors improve when allowed to sit in the fridge for a day before serving.

It's a weird recipe, but it's how they like it in Ohio.*

....

If there really is an "Ohio," which I highly doubt. Have you ever met someone from Ohio?

*Note that the recipe given in my link is "wrong," as pointed out in the comments. I'd find a better recipe, buCommunity is about to start.

The Hard Times Cafe chain serves it in these parts. As an ex-Cincinnatian, I find it isn't the same. In fact, I'm convinced the special ingredient in Cincinnati Chili is Ohio River water.

Yes, but then again he was a devious looking fellow and might have been pulling my leg about this whole 'Ohio' biz ;)

Re: Foods for those that just don't care anymore

I've tried that. (Sounds like the same stuff I tried.) I was underwhelmed. My sister serves it to her family often' date=' though, because the prep is really easy and the kids like it.[/quote']

I would't eat a bowl of it, but Cincinnati style chili works really well for chili dogs. Assuming it's the stuff -I- think it is. When I was living in Louisville there were a number of chili places within walking distance of my high school. I ate a lot of chili dogs...
