Re: Zeppelins

Seems like a recoilless rifle might be a good weapon to mount on a zeppelin--you just vent the weapon exhaust in a direction neutral or beneficial to the existing motion of the airship and it's all good. I don't think such weapons were in existence in the interwar period, though. A modern zeppelin, though, could actually mount a fairly large RR--106 and 120 mm RRs were used in combat, and a 155mm RR was the basis of the Davy Crockett "nuclear bazooka" concept. I think there were airborne recoilless concepts as large as 2-300 mm, though limited ammo supply(due to weight) would be a real concern for something like that. Still, it would be a relatively precise weapon, compared to "dumb" bombs, and wouldn't require a direct run over a target(you could maybe hit a target 15,000 feet away with a big enough RR).

Re: Zeppelins

World wide race for airships being organized, this was in WSJ:

I'm sort of imagining a 21st century version of 'The Great Race' (as in the movie with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) or 'Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines'.

Re: Zeppelins

For the love of Zeppelins, here are some plans I've used.

“Graf Zeppelin” LZ 127 plans

Excellent find.

I have a book titled Hindenburg - An Illustrated History (ISBN-13: 978-0-7858-1973-8, ISBN-10: 0-7858-1973-8) by Rick Archbold that covers much more that just the Hindenburg. It has full color semi-3d deck-plans/cutaways for not only the Hindenburg but the Graf Zeppelin. With a wealth of old pictures it is the best book on airships I have come across.

Re: Zeppelins

Not so much modern, but, amazingly I discovered that of all places, Birmingham, Alabama had the capacity for mooring airships back in the day. (Lived here eighteen years and didn't know until Thursday, when I heard one of our older attorneys mention the mooring mast).

I also recommend this game http://www.sierramadregames.com/index_airships_at_war.htm

There's a bit of record keeping involved as you juggle your hydrogen/helium supply and ballast in order to have enough to get home. (Especially when some bastard keeps shooting holes in your gas cells! )
