AmadanNaBriona
Re: Zeppelins My suspicion is that the ongoing inevitable drastic increase in the price of helium will end all mumblings of an airship renaissance. The underground airship movement will not be quelled. Of course, said movement is fairly pro-hydrogen. The relative number of air hours logged versus hydrogen accident related death ratio is terribly small. The Hindenburg, while amazingly dramatic and visually stunning, still had less casualties than a bad bus crash. Using a cheap lifting gas that can be cracked out of ballast allows buoyancy adjustments without needing a supply of expensive & slippery helium. megaplayboy
Re: Zeppelins Still wondering what the aerodynamic upper limit on airship speed might be. The Aeroscraft stuff apparently is designed for up to about 300kph, which is highly respectable. Looks like "old school" blimps and dirigibles/zeppelins top out around 150kph/90mph. If you could airlift 1000 tons anywhere in the world within 72 hours, I'd think that would have some material value.

Sydguy
Re: Zeppelins Hi, Could be interesting but soooooooooo slow. But it might be a mode of air travel where the flight takes longer than the security. See some comments on its impact here (the audio files are great) http://www.bbc.co.uk/threecounties/content/image_galleries/beds_zeppelin_gallery.shtml

tkdguy
Re: Zeppelins One of the nice little details about the Airship Ventures flight is that they have a champagne toast after the flight, as well as a ceremony handing out certificates (proof that you have actually flown on a Zeppelin). Cider is available for those who do not drink alcohol. Maybe this drink should be used instead.
Bolon
Re: Zeppelins There are those who are looking at airships, zeppelins or other blimp ships as a way to handle shipping to Far North communities in Canada. They can carry a lot for a low price, travel slowly but have low fuel costs.
