Kristopher
In other words, how "kid safe" are they supposed to be? What's acceptable, and what's clearly not? Just to be clear, I don't ask because I want to swear up a blue streak, or start posting superhero dirty stories, or anything of the sort. It's just that a couple of the NPCs I'm thinking of posting have rather unsavory personalities, and I want to strike a balance between saying what I mean to say, and saying too much. I worry about something I posted regarding Crimson, and I don't want to become known as someone posting for shock value or without decency. Pattern Ghost
Don't worry, I'm sure anything like that would blow over.
Pattern Ghost
Though it would kind of suck if you got a bad rep over it.
lemming
Well I would think a few steps back from the worst of NGD for the other forums would work. But that's just my opinion. Context and appropriate warnings in the thread title would be a good start. There are some stories I just wouldn't share on the boards from my past games, but the only times I've related those were when I wanted to kill a conversation. I don't read the Non-Gaming Discussions forum here, for protection of my sanity. If that's what you mean by NGD. No offense to anyone who does, I just know I'd end up foaming at the mouth ticked off about something sooner or later.

I participate regularly in several of the threads there, without any problem. You very quickly learn which threads and posters to avoid to keep your temper in check. Bartman
As far as your original post is concerned, I would just take simple precautions to keep things PG or PG-13. At one point the boards had a language filter on them. Which used to make things interesting. They just looked for strings and then removed the strings wherever it found them. I for one am glad they went away in the great crash last year. I was a little rediculous to not be able to write about a character cocking his gun without it becoming ****ing his gun. I would prefer not to have to go back to those days, so I would request that you refrain from using such language. That way Hero Games never feels the need to put a language filter back on. Lord Liaden
Hey, Kristopher: looking back over the thread on Crimson I think I know the sticky point you're referring to. If that's the worst sort of thing you're worried about, I wouldn't. The reference was rather oblique, and a child who happened to read it on the screen wouldn't pick up on it, while I doubt that an older person who did get it would be offended. For the most part these boards are pretty mature and civilized as online discussions go - the Hero community is largely self-moderating. We sometimes discuss mature subject matter here, but the lack of intent to shock is generally clear. Just keep politeness and respect in mind, and you should be fine. Blue
Being purposely abusive/insulting. Swearing without self-editing (You can substitute other characters for F***, we'll know what you mean). Graphic descriptions of sex. Nude pictures. "Revealing" pictures that do not have some sort of warning that they are revealing (some folks have kids around or are reading this board from work). I'm not the board-police, that's just what I've observed. And keep in mind that you can edit your own post (if someone complains about it) by clicking the EDIT button beneath it. Hermit
Yeah, speaking for myself, I find a warning before hand rather nice and appreciate it. So you seem to be on the right track to me. I'm #$#$ing delicate, ya know?
death tribble
I know of two people who were specifically banned from the boards. One because they put up a link to a pornographic website on every single forum and on practically every single thread they could find. And they were not trying to disguise the fact; The other for a continued and what seemed protracted assault on Steve Long for some reason they alone know. Some of the other posters will unfortunately remember these incidences.
SCUBA Hero
IIRC, the porn link poster was not a regular - just someone who saw & porn-spammed. Who was the other? swrushing?
Hermit
I think the other went by various handles, including Night/Shadow Stalker and such. He even rather rudely PMed a few people to make snide comments. But we should dwell on more pleasant things... "Four arms on Grond and agents with blasters... figuring out how to create the taskmaster, How to bring Dark Sereph down, by gumming his wings? This are a few of my favorite things..." Blue
Don't worry about it. Unfortunately it'll happen again eventually. It's unavoidable.

Hermit
Originally posted by Kristopher I didn't mean to drag all this up... Nah, not your fault. I think it was very cool of you to ask what the line was around here in the first place. Not many people take the feelings of others and the mores of an online forum into account like that. Vondy
1) avoid personal attacks, racial slurs, and needless flames 2) if you are going to discuss graphic sex and violence put a disclaimer on your post 3) attempt to avoid the excessive use of harsh language (not becuase its "over the line," but because it does not speak well of you (replacement characters need not be "disclaimed") 4) give people the benefit of the doubt, or ask if unsure and 5) don't feed the trolls!!! So, presumably, if you were to declare that the trolls never existed, it would be a retcon, wouldn't it? Did I ever tell you how much I hate Connor Hawke, the new Batgirl, and Kyle Rayner, and how anyone who likes them are morons... Alan
