Pariah
For today's in-class activity: Quote Background: You have discovered, quite to your surprise, that the family living next door to you these past few years are actually aliens from another planet, and they have been gathering information preparatory to a formal first contact between our two worlds. One thing they have been researching is the science knowledge and ability of ordinary Earthlings. Knowing that you are a student of physics, they have approached you with the following assignment. On the alien homeworld, their basic unit of time measurement is slightly different than a second on Earth. They have given you the length of their basic time unit, measured in Earth seconds. They want you to build a pendulum that swings with a period equal to their base time unit. You are provided with string, scissors, tape, weights, rulers and meter sticks, and any other basic scientific tools you may need. Your assignment is to calculate the parameters of the pendulum you will need, to construct it, and to submit video evidence that it swings at the desired period. archer
This is obviously a test of ingenuity and cunning rather than scientific prowess. Bribe one of the aliens with a selection of cultural artifacts (video tapes) to build it for you.
Cancer
Real academic April Fools' papers EDIT: Arguably the winning abstract: Quote Though it may be a behavior that has been observed and documented for millennia, and despite the connection between it and the full moon, the astronomical community has afforded very little attention to lycanthropy. We hope to address this deficiency by using the population of known exoplanets as a natural experiment to better characterize what properties of the moon are necessary to trigger a transformation into a werewolf. We additionally investigate which exoplanets are most likely to have exomoons which may cause werewolves, with a particular focus on LHS 1140 b. We also propose a new mission called the Werewolves From Infrared Radiation and Spectral-typing Telescope, or WFIRST, in order to better characterize exoplanetary systems. This will allow us to explore the impact of stellar type on lycanthropy more than it has traditionally been considered. We believe this represents a major step forward in our understanding and recognition of the burgeoning field of exocryptozoology. ============================================ 1 hour ago, archer said: This is obviously a test of ingenuity and cunning rather than scientific prowess. Grailknight
You just need a little trial and error to find how long it needs to traverse the an arc of 1/2 of their unit and a frictionless material so no velocity is lost to air resistance or the suspension point. Pariah
Yesterday I stopped at the store before school and picked up (among other things) a six-pack of Coke Zero Sugar. I put three of them into the fridge in the prep room I share with the teacher next door. At lunch I opened the Friday to discover only two bottles. Wait, what? So I went through to ask the sub who's covering for my neighbor this week if she knew anything about it. She wasn't there; she had apparently left for lunch. But in her trash I found an empty Coke Zero Sugar bottle. Who does that?
