While he wasn't flattering to them, that's not what Dr. Mid-nite said. he said they were out of touch with the realities of the rest of the country.

All I can say is that I'm deeply disappointed in results I'm seeing around the country. The worst president in my lifetime....easily...and people are flocking to him. Clearly evil men like Mitch and Lindsey retaining. Even if Biden wins....anti intellectualism has won the day. People want to be "ruled". I'm absolutely disgusted right now....

With all due respect, I came nowhere near to saying that. I was stating that that rural and suburban communities(of which I happen to be part) tend to see the problems and issues in America as something that happens to other people...often with the caveats such as "well they shouldn't live in such a slum" or "well if they only worked harder..they'd be fine" and other such general statements that ignore American realities. Issues are something that happen to other people and everything would be fine if they "just stopped causing trouble". They don't see it...so it doesn't exist. At the same time....because they're isolated both in reality and thought from America's urban areas...they also believe in issues they're told exist because they have no context to believe otherwise. Again....out of touch. And you might try asking for clarification before quoting me out of context next time. Thanks.

And more people live in urban areas than live in rural areas. If you're going to use that logic, I'll simply say people matter more than land. Again, I live in a semi rural area....and I've lived in urban and suburban areas in the past. I have firsthand experience.

Allow me to once again reiterate how absolutely despairing it is to witness a family member undergo the slow-yet-sure metamorphosis to Trump supporter/science denier. FOX "News" is like The Joker: scary when it isn't ridiculous.

It has often been used as a way for the opposing party to shirk responsibility and focus on politics over policy. What you've described is a specific important scenario where a lack of political acumen (that indicates genuine incompetency) is a deciding factor; what I had in mind are the endless stories about gaffes Trump has made that have no relevance to the danger that bureaucratic machinations pose (which most United States citizens fail to recognize, because they are both busy and mildly ignorant on such matters). If the media is supposed to be the watchdog of the government, they shouldn't bark every time he says or does something foolish yet otherwise tame...that is how alarm fatigue comes about.

Oregon could become 1st US state to decriminalize hard drugs through this November's ballot initiative.

Possession of small amounts of heroin, cocaine, LSD and other hard drugs would result in a $100 fine or the person could opt to go into new, free addiction recovery centers which are to be paid for by taxes on marijuana sales.

I'm excited to see this since it's a variation on the approach I've advocated for years. Portugal, the Netherlands and Switzerland have each decriminalize hard drugs with no uptick in overall hard drug usage in their populations (Portugal with no uptick according to the article, the Netherlands and Switzerland according to my ever-failing memory).

When you consider how much the US spends on law enforcement, prosecution, and prisons over drug possession offenses, we could probably instead pay for rehab plus a new house for each drug offender and still come out cheaper and have less of a drug problem.

No, we can put this fairly on the leadership. I live in that country on your northern border, where almost all our leaders took this pandemic seriously early on. Our per capita case and death rates are far lower than in the US, and while we're also experiencing a second wave it's nowhere near what America is going through; and our leaders are reinstating more stringent measures. Europe's approach to the virus was piecemeal and varied greatly, so it's not surprising things are getting bad again for the continent as a whole. Other countries like South Korea brought the outbreak under control even sooner.

But the goal was never to stop the spread. It was always to slow the spread, to test as many people as possible, to identify carriers and contact trace. Until there's an effective vaccine or treatment, COVID won't be stopped. Our priority is to keep the health care system from being overwhelmed. The benefit of firmer coordinated action now is minimizing the resultant deaths and chronic illnesses. All of that is doable.
