  1. Re: The "Nice Happy" Thread Must be why I'm such a cheerful guy.
  2. Re: The "Nice Happy" Thread Lots of stuff to be happy about right now. I'm working on a couple of different craft projects right now. First one, my wife and I are creating some Girl Genius costumes -- she's going to be Agatha Clay/Heterodyne, I'm going to be Gilgamesh Wulfenbach. My costume is nearly done -- I'm working on creating Gil's electric staff, and it's coming along nicely. And I just learned today that Studio Fogio are supposed to be at Gencon, so we're going to wear them there. And I got some more work on my second project finished last night. I'm very pleased about that. I should be able to finish it with a couple more days of work. My fingers are really, really sore though. :ouch: And I got one of my major "outside" projects finished yesterday, too. Well, nearly finished. Still have some cleanup work to do, but that shouldn't take too long. I ran sprinkler lines to our container gardens out back, so now we won't have to water them by hand! And tonight my beautiful bunny wife and I are going to see Prince Caspian. w00t!
  3. Re: How do you visualize combat? Usually I run it straight, but for dramatic effect I sometimes play up descriptions. For instance, in a recent combat one of the heroes threw some shiruken at a villain. He hit, but rolled crappy damage (nothing got through, not so much as a point of Stun). I described it as "the villain bats the throwing stars away harmlessly."
  4. Re: The cranky thread My condolences. What happened, if you don't mind telling us about it?
  5. Re: Components and Failed Spells In situations where time is not a factor and there's no danger to life and limb if they fail the spell, I generally don't make spellcasters in my games make rolls. They can give themselves enormous bonuses by taking Extra Time, using superior materials, having another spellcaster assist them, and the like. So their normal (say) 13- roll can easily become an 18- roll. Now, if they're trying to cast a spell where failure means something bad will happen (accidentally summon a demon, for instance), or if time is of the essence, then I make them roll. (I pretty much do the same thing with some other types of rolls, too, depending on the situation. If a thief needs to climb to the top of a wall, but he's got all afternoon and has access to a ladder, I just let him do it without a Climbing roll).
  6. Re: F-Bombs Away! In RL, I drop the f-bomb often enough that I'm sometimes shocked I haven't been called to the Hague to face charges of blatant WMD usage. So as a player it wouldn't even register unless someone specifically pointed it out. Even then I'd probably just shrug. So I haven't the faintest clue what any of my characters would do.
  7. Re: A DC Animated-style HeroMachine Where'd you find Valhallen's "Magic Axe"?
  8. Re: Disadvantage Point Limits. Keep in mind that many GMs jigger the points you get from disads. I've seen a lot of people do 250 base + 100 disads (or 100 base + 50 disads for Heroic characters). It's often easier to come up with 100 points of disads than 150.
  9. Re: Musings on Random Musings Oh no you don't! You're not getting out of my Thunderbolts game that easily!
  10. Re: The Deconstructing of Wynnie Wonder Something like that once happened to my character in a game long ago. We fought a robotic villainess. My character Myrmidon, a robotics expert, ended up reprogramming her so she had free will -- she could decide for herself whether she would work for the bad guys or not. Last we saw her, she went off on a walkabout to try to figure out what she really wanted to do with her life.
  11. Buck McThrustpecs! This one had me rolling in the aisle... !

  14. Re: What is Your Inner Character? Chaotic Evil Elf Monk Elf??? Must be because I'm so adorable... while I'm ripping out your heart with my bare hands.
  15. Re: Musings on Random Musings Pft. You wish. Zornwil could clearly beat Death Tribble in a standup fight. Now maybe -- maybe -- if Death Tribble had time to prepare and access to his arsenal, then it would be a fair fight. Otherwise? No way. I'm glad you agree.

  17. Re: WWYCD: "Tell me about your teammates." How Arachne feels about the Avengers: Banner: Um... He's OK. I guess. He's a pretty good leader and all. And he looks really hawt in spandex. OMG, did I just say that out loud? Hornet: He's pretty cool, and he talks to me about science and stuff. I'm not as smart as my dad but I'm still pretty smart, so I understand most of it. Well, some of it. He's also kinda a babe, which is funny 'cause I thought all scientist types were stuffy and geeky and stuff. Ms. Marvel: Geez, she's... um... wow. When is the boob fairy going to come pay me a visit? Oh, as a team mate? Um. Well, she's really strong, and she likes to hit stuff. That's good, right? Black Knight: She's kinda cool. She has a horse with wings, which is pretty awesome when you think about it. And she's got this whole "turns things into other things" thing going on, which is really handy when you're fighting a guy made out of adamantium. Iron Girl: Oh my god, her broom closet is bigger than my parents' whole apartment! I have no idea how anyone could possibly need that much money! Still... I hope she's my Secret Santa next Christmas... Cinnabar: She's like my big sister. My big, sad, lonely sister. I wish I could get her to crack a smile once in a while. No luck so far, but I'll keep working on it!

  20. Re: WWYCD: "Tell me about your teammates." How Gabriel Shaw feels about the other X-Men: Stereo: Belligerant and filled with bluster, he takes "Angry Irishman" and runs it into the ground. He has a smart mouth and is far too independent for the team. Still, he is tactically versatile and quite powerful. If I can direct his anger, he will be an asset. HipHop: Insolent and cocky. Filled with the need to show off and to prove his worth, probably due to his father's ... misfortunes. Still, despite his smart mouth he has proved willing to work with the team in whatever capacity is needed. Big Guy: Ah, Dominic. You hide a great deal of pain and insecurity under that playful exterior. Still, the X-Men is not a therapy session or a daycare. You cannot bring your problems into the field with us. Rebus: A complete unknown. I will learn more of him. (Yeah, Shaw is kinda a d**k).
  21. Re: A Thread for Random Musings There's a family of red foxes living in a culvert near the street on my drive home. I've been seeing three or four little ones playing and cavorting in the ditch almost every day for the past couple of weeks. They're really getting big now -- I expect they'll be old enough to leave home soon. It's really a thrill to catch sight of them on my way home.
  22. Re: A Thread for Random Musings Yay! I managed to sell my Tyranids and my Chaos armies. And I've got a buyer for the Eldar army.
