eepjr24's first breakdown is a really good one...

It might be worth working out the idea of -10% of AP per Charge used... of course you never get more than 10 Charges, so perhaps a floor of 20% (-80%) for this. Each charge after the first loses a percentage of it's Active Points as you go, but you can theoretically have a large number of charges (if you buy a Power with 22 Charges you should still be able to use this idea).

I wonder if maybe this was made into it's own Limitation with a standardized Recovery rate (similar recovery to Chargers, let's say); so this could be used on any power... Cool idea.

    Greetings all,

I'd like to pick you brains on pricing a disad.

I'm looking for some input on a power disadvantage.  I have in mind a power that loses effectiveness the more it is used.  Not Burnout as long as you have charges it still works,  but charges that are less effective as they are used.  Each use drops the effectiveness of the power by 10 active points.

The idea is simple.  I can use a custom power disad.  I'm trying to figure out how to price it properly.  Should it be costed similarly to Burnout, or should the disad be worth more?  After 5 uses the player would be out of charges, but charges 4 and 5 are not going to be nearly as effective.  And a blanket disad worth -X/Y is a whole lot easier than tiering each individual charge.

    Any input is welcome. ?

So I did some math (surprise, surprise) and would use the following chart:

If power will be reduced for every charge until there are none: -3/4                                       (AP drop * charges = ~Original AP)
If power will be reduced by about 1/2 of the original AP then charges run out: -1/2           (AP drop * charges = ~Original AP*.5)
If power will be reduced by about 1/4 of the original AP then charges run out: -1/4           (AP drop * charges = ~Original AP*.75)
    Less than 1/2: -0

    Examples:

Example of the calculation I devised:

    Line 1:  AP/((100+90+80+70+60+50+40+30+20+10)/# Of Charges)-1
    Line 2:  AP/((100+90+80+70+60)/# Of Charges)-1
    Line 3:  AP/((100+90+80+70+60+50+40+30)/# Of Charges)-1

That will probably take care of 90% of the cases and provide you a guide for any outliers. I would call the custom limitation something like "Tired Charges".

Funny you should mention the band aspect like this - the UK Indie Rock scene actually has to do with Which labels the bands used: not that they didn't use any labels. For a good part of 2000-2010ish "Indie Rock" would primarily refer to Independent Label, a small label not specifically owned by a larger label, especially one of the big 5. DIY musicians really didn't take off (though have always been around) until the rise of Bandcamp, Spotify, and Kickstarters, around 2010 or so.

This is in juxtaposition to Alt Rock from the 80s and 90s which was a band that may or may not have had a major label, but was primarily either college radio play or no radio play (as opposed to Format Radio or Top-40 Radio); until the 90s where Alt Rock became a Radio Format of play, making the whole label a moot point.

If we want to continue with that bad analogy, I would put Champions in the DOJ Era firmly in Indie Gaming as they weren't one of the big companies putting games out. In that vein IPR is definitely an Indie Label in modern parlance...

IMO "indie game" is a lot like "alt music" - a useless title that tells you nothing, makes someone sound pretentious, and ultimately fails to help anyone figure out if the product is any good at all.

Given it's a trope of the genre... I'd actually set it where it's a moderately accomplishable goal within the campaign ... how much damage does a typical person do with a weapon. If you can normally get 2-3 Body past defenses, which doubles to 4-6 Body... then unless you've got a particularly tough monster; maybe call it 5 Body will decapitate most monsters.

The other option aside from Campaign Limits/Guidelines (a goo=d idea anyway), is to use the DCs Of Equipment Can't Be More Than Doubled. If the Gun is free stuff, there's an upper limit to it. If the gun is paid for.. well, back to Campaign Guidelines.

Thank you for the information. Potential viable uses of Transformation, non-self focused mind you, may be mused about elsewhere at another time, but that will be for another time.

In the meanwhile, the content that was intended for here has come about, discussed, and now has meandered elsewhere. If you wish to discuss such, I've not a problem with that being done so in a different Topic. But, this has strayed far enough for now. Let's move past this.

Actually I was thinking of this (I don't think it will be a problem in this game) but I kinda like the idea that any damage added to equipment can only go as far as max damage on the weapon (assuming ranged attack, HKA's are already limited to no more than double) Essentially guaranteeing max damage isn't overpowered, but makes the damage significant 7 damage on every shot by a 9mm would be really good, but we don't have that pistol punching through body armor when it shouldn't (again, in a game of cinematic realism.)
    I think I'll try that.

And for off the shelf guns, this really does make sense. They can already get a decent amount of damage out of a gun by adding special rounds, scopes and other OCV modifiers (if you use hit locations), etc. It makes sense that a small piece of lead is only capable of causing so much damage no matter how you shoot it or what you shoot it into.

Sorry mate, to Transform yourself into a Gargoyle use Shape Shift or Images.

Transform very specifically, in short sentences no less, says not to use it on yourself. Full Stop. There's no Context here - don't use it on yourself, especially if another Power does the same thing. That's why the sentence was broken out without any other clauses to it.

It's not a contradiction, its a condition. You can do whatever you want, but RAW is very clear on the topic: Transform cannot target the Self.

There becomes a point where in attempting to simulate certain things you create unplayability, or at least reduce the Heroic Fun. Besides, let's not get too realistic, Growth is designed to change your size - so we're already at the implausible right there.

The thing about mechanical rules is they're often put in place for various reasons, game balance being the primary one.

Now, let's say a group does decide to use Transform - if you have to be at the Major or Severe level to do what is being asked; and I'm not sure that's cheaper than Shape Shift, and mechanically it's much more clunky as it involves Dice, or at least an average, and quite possibly utilize more phases/time than the imagined ability would need.

So while Transform looks enticing (and it's right there in the Power name to change things); it's mechanically an unwieldy fit to begin with.

This is one of those parts of the system that is in a bad spot, mechanically. Honestly, I would just say Sight has Discriminatory by default, and not deal with this vague half-step of what "mostly discriminatory" means. It's an unnecessary system complication.

See, for me, knowing a genetic condition was indicated by eye color / pattern would require a KS skill, but perhaps "Fully Discriminatory" would allow you to more easily notice such in relation to your KS.

Sense Modifiers affect how much information that sense gives you; you still need appropriate knowledge or skills to do anything with some of that gleaned information.

You ask to change on the Genetic Scale - Cosmetic Transform won't do that, as it's designed for Cosmetic Changes only. Basic things like your skin color, the clothes you're wearing, the upholstery on all your furniture...

So yeah, it looks very pricey to use Shape Shift in comparison. If you want to actually change an object into something new that's a Major Transform (which falls in with the Cellular Adder on Shapeshift), and is 3x the cost per D6. You'll need enough Dice to double your body as well (and there's nothing in the rules about not being able to use Transform on yourself, it's an Attack, needs a Target, and just like other Adjust Powers of this nature you can certainly use it on yourself).

Transform also needs an Undo condition, which Shapreshift does not.

So a Cosmetic Transform for a minor disguise (that could probably be removed, depending on SFX, more easily that a Disguise Shapeshift) is doable; but for a major cellular change the Shapeshift will be the better option. There's no reason you can't use two different Powers for the same SFX, depending on which Mechanical Effect works better for the specific desired outcome.

Also as a note, Multiform also works well for cellular changes on a major level as it literally changes you from one character to another, but gets clunky and forces you to recreate character sheets for each form.
