  1. UNTIL Angels A TV series running from 1980 to 1984, this "exercise in pure escapism" as one critic dubbed it, featured the adventures of four irresistibly glamourous and supremely competent UNTIL agents as they circled the globe outwitting, outfighting and outclassing the VIPER masterminds they encountered. Starring Loni Anderson as Serena Donovan, Jayne Kennedy as Carmen Turner, Jenny Agutter as Lady Celeste Harrowford and Maren Jensen as Marcy Stokes, the quartet were not only masters of disguise and infiltration, but exceptionally able pilots, and were often seen flying their Delta Angel fighters into battle--including one memorable episode when Serena flew a spacecraft with a nuclear payload into the path of an oncoming meteor, barely escaping with her life. The series also starred Susan Sullivan as their control officer, Commander Rosanna Chase, for the first two years; she was replaced by Erin Gray as Captain Allison Reynolds for the remainder of the run. A movie version--a sequel/update with new characters--starred Catherine Zeta-Jones as Helena Savage, Michelle Rodriguez as Tracy Hildago, Gina Torres as Petra Mitchell and Ali Larter as Hunter Reilly. It was released in 2013 and was number seven at the box office, receiving favorable reviews, although longtime fans of the show lamented the lack of cameo appearances by the original stars. A sequel is planned for release in 2015.
  2. This well-experienced superhero comes to us from the work of Andreas Englund-- Don't let his age fool you--he can still dish it out with the best of them--
  3. Now there's no need for that kind of language.
  4. I was glad he didn't take it in that direction. Good Job, QM.
  5. Fraimworks As mentioned before in another thread, the people at Kenzer & Company swear by them. Plus they've done a lot of work for HERO, so your players should be familiar with their art. Hope that helps.
  6. That's what I was thinking, especially the Precognition part. Being able to state to the electorate exactly how and how badly your opponent's economic and/or diplomatic and/or social programs will go wrong would be a huge help in boosting your own poll numbers and making him look bad in the TV debates.
  7. Superheroes Lives A directory of live-action superhero movies and TV series.
  8. Actually, the death penalty has existed throughout the history of this country and the history of human civilization. It's just been in comparatively recent times that we've had the debate over whether or not it is 1) an effective deterrent to crime, and 2) a just and fitting punishment for the guilty party. And most of the methods of execution we're familiar with--hanging, electrocution, lethal gas, and now lethal injection--have been attempts to refine the process to make it quicker and more painless. Even the guillotine, as gruesome as it was, was an attempt along those lines, a more sure and certain method of beheading than a headsman with an axe. As for superheroes and the death penalty, I think Vondy may have a point--if a criminal was duly convicted under the law and sentenced to death and was in fact, guilty, I don't think Superman or Batman or any other hero with a strong CVK would go out of their way to "rescue" that criminal from Death Row. Now if there was any conclusive evidence that a convict sentenced to die was in fact innocent, then Superman, Batman and any other responsible hero would do everything within their power to make sure that the innocent party was set free and justice was done. That was one of Superman's first adventures, as I recall--proving the innocence of a woman sentenced to die in the electric chair. Hope that helps.
  9. A lot of characters would depend not just on your definition of "liberal," but who was writing them at the time. I remember a letter column in a long-ago issue of Captain America where the writer of the time offered the opinion that Cap was a New Deal liberal. The Ultimate Universe Cap has been depicted as a very solid conservative, with attitudes towards women and minorities that seem quite bigoted by today's sensibilities--or so I understand. Wonder Woman was created in part on the belief by William Moulton Marston that women were not only becoming more powerful in society, but that they were better suited for leadership because they were more disposed towards the greater good than men, who sought power for their own gain. Obviously not a traditional precept. Just about any character written by Dennis "Denny" O'Neil is going to come off as a liberal, I think. I remember on his run on Daredevil after Bullseye--Elektra's murderer--regained his mobility after Daredevil had crippled him during Frank Miller's run. Daredevil kept talking about how he was going to kiil Bullseye when he finally found him--but when he had him at his mercy, he realized he couldn't do it. "I'm not a killer," was his line, as much to himself as it was to Bullseye. Then there's the whole Code Vs. Killing thing, which to my mind would put most heroes--if not all of them--on the "anti-" side of the death penalty issue, usually seen as a liberal position. That doesn't mean they couldn't hold other points of view which could be seen as right-wing--Batman, I think, would prefer greater restrictions against convicts being granted parole, if not abolishing the practice altogether. Hope that helps.
  10. To non-superpowered people, they're the Laws of Science. To the superpowered, they're the Occasionally Helpful Suggestions.
  11. I've thought that Lady Blasphemy would make a good name for a villianess. That's the name you give to a solo operator or a mastermind.
  12. Well, if you asked them, they would say, "The Earth Preservation Alliance is the true enviromental protection agency. We're not some ineffectual government yuks whose real job is making sure the corporate interests get everything they want. We are the only ones standing in the way of this good Earth and the greedy monsters who would pave over every last square foot of open ground foul up every last quart of clean water just so they can make themselves that much richer and everyone else a thousand times poorer. We're the EPA that's fighting for the Earth--and we're going to make sure you don't forget it!" Again, hope that helps.
  13. Earth Preservation Alliance, or EPA That's all I got for now. Hope that helps.
  14. Even things that aren't supposed to explode, will.
  15. I like Solarman and Hyperion. If you're leaning towards Guardian, how about Guardian Angel? That could be a name given him by the press--someone he saves toalks to a reporter calling him his "guardian angel" and the paper runs with it. Hope that helps.
  16. I don't know as this is what you're looking for, but I always thought it was appropriate for a world where superpowers are real-- "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power”--Abraham Lincoln
  17. Here's some possibilities-- Skye--"Cute kid, but a know-nothing know-it-all. Hopefully, she'll learn." Ward--"Competent as all hell, but I wish he'd take that ramrod out from up his behind." Stark--"How does anyone spend more than ten minutes with him and not want very badly to punch his face?" Thor--"Haven't met him. Sounds like he does all his thinking with his hammer." Hand--"I've heard rumors that she smiles, but I don't believe them." Garrett--"Heard all the stories, and Coulson vouches for him. He's good." Hope that helps.

    Riot Car

From the 1930s via the Modern Mechanix Blog, this is some guy's--specifically, Victorino L. Tunaya of Brooklyn NY--idea of riot control: Here it is as depicted on the cover--just as it does today, size matters: Although I don't know as two to five people could be considered a riot, but hey--the department spent the money on the thing, might as well get some use from it.
  19. A lot of the villains named were with the game from the very beginning. Armadillo, Bluejay, Brick, Cheshire Cat, Dragonfly, Green Dragon, Howler, Icicle, Mechanon, Ogre, Pulsar, Shrinker and VIPER are in the campaign book for the Champions boxed set. Doctor Destroyer was the villain in the first published adventure The Island Of Doctor Destroyer. Foxbat first appeared in Enemies II and later had his own column in Adventurers' Club, the official HERO PnP magazine. I would say this qualifies them for iconic status, at least as far as the Champions RPG is concerned. This is characteristic of most superhero universes that are created from the ground up. If you remember the Milestone universe they had Icon (Superman), Static (Spider-Man but with electrical powers), Hardware (Batman but more tech-oriented) and the Blood Syndicate (X-Men, Teen Titans, etc.). In Kurt Busiek's Astro City you have Samaritan (Post-Crisis John Byrne Superman) Supersonic (Silver Age Superman) Leopardman and Kitkat (Silver Age Batman and Robin) the Confessor and Altar Boy (O'Neill/Adams Batman and Robin) the First Family (Fantastic Four), Winged Victory (Wonder Woman), the Hanged Man (the Spectre) and many more. I recall Steve Long saying something to the effect that players like to pit their characters against villains similiar to what can be found in the comics, which is why he introduced the Black Harlequin in the 5th Edition Conquerors, Killers & Crooks. (Three guesses as to who inspired that villain, and the first two don't count.) Mechanon, on the other hand, if you keep his original concept in mind (he was meant to be a guard for a superhero team's base, but Something Went Wrong), then he can be seen as not so much a case of "swiping from the comics" as "the Gamemaster messing with his players again"-- : "Okay, we want to build a superpowered AI robot to guard our base for us while we're away. Can we do that?" : "Suurrrre you can! Go right ahead! It'll be FUN! BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA! : "I don't mind the laughter--but does he have to shine the flashlight in his face like that?"
  20. That works, if your campaign is on the theme of Futurama or something just as fun. I like how the center territory on the map acronyms out. I can see their starship captains introducing themselves-- "We represent--DANG!"
  21. "Look Into My Eyes--You Wish To Serve Me--You Wish To Obey. . .Obey. . .Obey. . ."
  22. I would call him--The Infinite One. The way I figure it, his powers very likely include immortality, manifested as his decreased rate of aging, and his other powers are very likely to increase as his life goes on. Who knows how powerful he may become as the centuries pass? Actually, he might. He may have figured out how he became as powerful as he is, and he may have even figured out how to leap ahead a few centuries to realize his full potential--to become truly Infinite. This would require some very rare magic artifacts or some unique technology that he would have to acquire through means fair or foul, which would bring him to the attention of the PC heroes. Hope that helps.
  23. I liked the 1990s series. Green Hornet and Green Lantern too. There! I said it!
