  1. Of course not. Why would such a character have a vulnerability? Lucius Alexander What is the palindromedary's vulnerability?
  2. The major difference between "Requires a Roll" and "Saving Throw" is the answer to the question "Who rolls the dice?" If the spell has an Activation Roll of 11, that's mathematically equivalent to letting the target attempt a saving throw on 3d6 and saving on 9 or less. You can allow players to buy Skill Levels with Saving Throw to improve that. You want a spell that does "half damage if save?" Just buy half the spell without the Limitation, then buy the rest with the Limitation. You want Saving Throws based on Characteristics? I'd say give the spell a Limitation equivalent to Required Roll 8 or less. You want the spellcaster to impose penalties on Saving Throws? I'd suggest an Advantage you can put on specific spells or if it's something that applies to all spells look at Change Environment. In some cases, the "Saving Throw" already exists in Hero. Powers like Telepathy and Mind Control for example already have Breakout Rolls, you can see through Images with a Perception roll, etc. Imposing a Saving Throw on these would be redundant but you probably already knew that so I guess I'm being redundant in pointing it out. Lucius Alexander Save vs Palindromedary
  3. Would you object to me crossposting this on the RPG thread? Lucius Alexander Thinking of putting a palindromedary on a diet
  4. I dunno. I think some players, if it's called "napalm" will expect it to act like napalm. And be disappointed if it doesn't. Or if you intend to give them those Advantages for free, the player sitting next to them might object if they paid as much for an attack that doesn't have the same extras. But it's entirely possible I overestimate the odds of either of those issues. And at a certain point, you do have to say "close enough, the rest is special effects and judgement calls." Lucius Alexander Palindromedary special effect.
  5. I bought some of those Sentinals Tokens for exactly that purpose. I use poker chips for Fortune Points (like Action Points but more flexible in things you can do with them.) Lucius Alexander And a token palindromedary
  6. I've said this before, but some things bear repeating. With Hero I have about 75 Powers, about that many Skills, about 20 or 25 Talents, all in one book, out of which I can build anything I need. But some people's idea of "simpler" is a few thousand spells, feats, skills, features, whatever, spread through a dozen books, that still won't let you build everything you can build in Hero. Lucius Alexander I'm sure I have built thousands of taglines using palindromedaries
  7. Saying it's like that doesn't make it like that. It's not like that, and it remains unlike it even when you say it is. Granted that Hero is more complex than it needs to be, the complexity is not "for the sake of it." Exactly. If being complicated were such a problem, D&D would not own 99% of the market. Which doesn't mean I don't still think Hero is more complicated than it needs to be. I tend to make ALL powers I build in Hero Designer "Compound Powers" even if there is only one Power in the build, precisely because it enables me to copy and paste such a helpful version of the power. Otherwise it looks like this: Just Fill it with the Fire Hose: Dispel 4d6, Does Knockback (+1/4), Area Of Effect (4m Radius; +1/4), Fire Powers (+1/2), Double Knockback (+1/2), Cumulative (96 points; +1), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1), Autofire (5 shots; +1/2), Non-Standard Attack Power (+1) (72 Active Points); Conditional Power Must be standing by the pool to change it (-1 1/2), Reduced By Range (-1/4), Incantations (-1/4) As for making things "user friendly" for the players, I try to explain how the power works in Notes, and in the export, sometimes cut out everything BUT the Name and the Notes. But trying to copy and paste directly from Hero Designer into a post here, the Notes aren't carried. Speaking of carrying notes, I didn't care for Extratone, but it still beats some things I hear on the popular radio. Lucius Alexander And I'm sharing a Coke Zero with my: Palindromedary
  8. An advantage of that over the Aid based build I did is that my Aid build improves everything 5 Active Points at a time in lockstep, but one might want to improve STR by 5, Resistant Defenses by 1, gain a +1 to a Power Skill each night, get a +1 Overall Level only on the night of the Full Moon, etc. Lucius Alexander The palindromedary produces a selection of carts and wagons and a variety of polishes.
  9. I believe this meets your requirements almost exactly. I see a Good Moon Rising: (Total: 144 Active Cost, 11 Real Cost) Aid 2d6 (standard effect: 6 points), Lunar Powers (+1/2), Delayed Return Rate (points return at the rate of 5 per Day; +2 1/4), Time Limit (4 Days before begins to fade; +2 1/4), Expanded Effect (x13 Characteristics or Powers simultaneously) (+6) (144 Active Points); Damage Over Time, Lock out (cannot be applied multiple times) (4 damage increments, damage occurs every 1 Day, -4 1/4), 1 Charge which Recovers every 1 Month (-3), Only to Aid Self (-1), One Use At A Time (-1), Extra Time (5 Minutes, Only to Activate, -1), Conditional Power Must begin 4 nights prior to the Full Moon (-1/2), Limited Power 2d6 = 5 pts gained (-1/4), Conditional Power Contingent on good relationship with associated Deity (-1/4), Incantations (-1/4), Concentration (1/2 DCV; -1/4) (Real Cost: 11) The power is activated by a five minute Lunar Invocation on the appropriate night (if the Moon is full on the 14th, the ceremony is on the 10th.) The next night, the character gains +5 to up to 13 of the powers associated with their Lunar Deity, and another +5 each night, until the night of the Full Moon, when the total of +20 is reached. After this, the additional power fades at the rate of -5 each night. Lucius Alexander The palindromedary observes that on the night of the Full Moon you will have a full knight of the Moon.
  10. Technically, a mule is an ass on only one side of its family. Lucius Alexander The palindromedary says sometimes half-assed is still better than what Lucius Alexander can do
  11. Thanks for tracking down and quoting the citation. We now know that IN COMBAT the penalties for called shots are NOT halved. Lucius Alexander The palindromedary is threatening to kick me in the head if I don't get off the internet and get stuff done.
  12. I would like to know your rules citation. If surprised OUT OF COMBAT a target takes double STUN. Hit Locations also have STUN multipliers. As far as I know there is no official rule about how those multipliers interact, although given the potential devastation of multiplying by 5 and then multiplying the product by 2 I wouldn't be surprised if there were such a rule and I just missed it. As for what the original poster is looking or, have you considered using Haymaker? Lucius Alexander The palindromedary has Defense Maneuver. You cannot get behind it, as it has no behind to get.
  13. "We now join our correspondent reporting live from the front lines of the War on Straw." Thank you. First let me reassure our listeners that I am safe. Except for those unfortunates made of straw, the battle at this point seems more depressing and even boring more than it is dangerous and terrifying. For the men of straw, though, the assault is ongoing and relentless. "What about reports we heard that the cavalry had actually taken one hundred percent casualties? From where you stand does that seem true, that they were entirely wiped out?" That's not exactly true, but it IS true that the cavalry is no longer functioning as cavalry, if they ever did in this battle. The one hundred percent casualty rate is true only of the HORSES. The horses are really taking a beating and it goes on and on. Despite the fact they seem to all be dead. "Would you say then that big losers in this conflict are horses and straw men?" Calling them losers implies they were ever actually fighting. Horse carcasses and straw men are the victims. I don't see any clear winners. "Do you have any fresh insights to share with our listeners?" Nothing they haven't heard from me before. Signing off now from the front lines of the War on Straw, I am Lucius Alexander Brought to you by Palindromedary News - all the news that's fit for palindromedaries
  14. Do they offer any evidence for the existence of this cosmic threat? Lucius Alexander The palindromedary asks why we should believe people who swiped a major city and environs, and who only offered this fantastic excuse once they'd been caught up to and stopped.
  15. Sure Shot. +2 OCV only with Cover maneuver, only if you actually carry through and do the damage. Effect: Never waste ammunition, never miss. If you are going to miss, you don't take the shot. Lucius Alexander Superskilled palindromedary
  16. Gonna Knock you into the Middle of Next Week!: (Total: 70 Active Cost, 19 Real Cost) Extra-Dimensional Movement (Single Point in Time, (next Wednesday) Physical Location Same As Starting Location), Does Knockback (+1/4), Usable As Attack (+1/2), Grantor pays the END whenever the power is used, Grantor can only grant the power to others (70 Active Points); 1 Recoverable Charge (-1 1/4), Increased Endurance Cost (x2 END; -1/2), Extra Time (Extra Segment, Only to Activate, -1/4), Concentration (1/2 DCV; -1/4), Inaccurate (1/2 OCV; -1/4), Costs Endurance (Only Costs END to Activate; -1/4) (Real Cost: 19) Lucius Alexander Knocked back into a palindromedary
  17. How do you define "bad ass?" Impressive as hell? Then yes, PRE with "Does Knockback." Able to take a pounding and not fall down? Cannot Be Stunned and some high defenses. Able to take out something tough with one shot? A high damage output attack. All the above? More points to spend than anyone else gets. Lucius Alexander The palindromedary suggests +5 to EGO rolls to resist Animal Handler and Riding rolls. Complication: Stubborn. Some Damage Negation to just stand there and bray when the rider gets fed up and starts beating you with a stick.
  18. And one could assume that "normal" bowfire is underfiring, not using the full draw of the bow in the interest of getting the shots off faster. Haymaker is taking the time and effort to draw the bow ALL the way before loosing. That said, it could also be conceptualized as lining up the "perfect shot." Either way, yes, I permit it. It's both technically legal and conceptually justifiable - but I don't know that I'd argue if someone else forbids it in their game. Lucius Alexander and a legal and justified palindromedary

    Terraforming

Terraforming: (Total: 172 Active Cost, 9 Real Cost) Summon 150-point Base (Planet), Slavishly Devoted (+1), Time Limit (1 Century +, Planets are built to last and last., Once established, the ecosystem should endure for generations if someone doesn't screw it up.; +3 3/4) (172 Active Points); Increased Endurance Cost (x10 END; Energy Intensive (but expended over many years); -4), Extra Time (25 Years, Only to Activate, -3 1/2), 1 Charge (Recovers Under Limited Circumstances; Once committed, can you afford to give up on a planet and try again in another system?; -3), OIF Bulky Unbreakable Expendable (Extremely Difficult to obtain new Focus; Extremely resource-intensive project; -2), Required Multiple Users ([129-256] people; -2), No Conscious Control (Only Effects cannot be controlled; Climate and Ecology find their own balance; -1), Limited Power Only "Task" is to exist as a habitable planet (-1), Summoned Being Must Inhabit Locale (Suitable Star System, Suitable Planet, etc; -1/2), Side Effects (So much could go so wrong; -1/2), Costs Endurance (Only Costs END to Activate; -1/4), Restrainable (Only by means other than Grabs and Entangles; Can be sabotaged; -1/4) (Real Cost: 9) Lucius Alexander Welcome to Planet Palindromedary! Great place to live now but we had to bust our humps to get it like this. edit: This is probably not the best way to do this.....for one thing if 250 people just spent 9 pts directly on a base they could afford a much nicer planet....
  20. If I buy fire insurance it doesn't mean I want my house to burn down. I might buy insurance so that, IF my house happens to burn down, I'll be able to replace my extensive collection of Hero Games books. Similarly, if my character has Regeneration and ability to regrow lost body parts, that does NOT mean I'm "asking" to be dismembered. It might mean the character concept is such that I can't envision the character not having that ability, whether it comes in play or not. It might mean I think it's something that could happen, and IF it does, I want to be able to recover. It probably doesn't mean I want my character to get maimed - I don't remember ever actually wanting that for a character. That said, I do agree that if a character's Complications, Limitations, and yes, sell-backs, come up in play, the player doesn't have a right to complain unless it seems excessive or vindictive. Lucius Alexander Trying to insure a palindromedary
  21. I'm still trying to understand how "put levels on DCV and Dodge" can be understood as more than one action. Lucius Alexander It's like saying the hump isn't part of the palindromedary
  22. When I think about it, I don't think old school AD&D even enforced that stereotype too strongly. You could not have a magic user with STR 18/00 but you COULD have a magic user with STR or CON of 18, or a fighter with INT or WIS of 18. Lucius Alexander Insert palindromedary tagline here
  23. Actually, there seem to be a couple of other threads started on RPG net about Hero. If nothing else that's a sign that there's interest in the system. Lucius Alexander Insert palindromedary tagline here
  24. After being kicked out of medical school for too many drunken pranks, Bernard Beatific sought to redeem himself by volunteering for a dangerous experimental procedure. Or so he likes to say; he was actually drunk again when he volunteered. He never could hold his liquor, and it doesn't take that much to get him intoxicated. At first all the procedure seemed to do was induce a modest boost to physical capability and an extreme case of hypertrichosis, excessive growth of hair all over the body. Even when shaved the hair was observed to grow back so fast its growth was visible to the naked eye. At first accepted to Ryan's Rejects in the hope his monstrous appearance could be an asset, but his true power was discovered thanks to an accident he had while driving drunk; his broken body was visibly repairing itself even as it was dragged from the wreck. Now code named Battle Beast(informally, Booze Beast or Bottle Beast) the former would-be doctor is ready to lead the way into any trap or ambush, confident in his ability to regenerate, as long as they first get him drunk enough to feel no fear or pain. And thanks the same regenerative power, he recovers from intoxication fast enough to treat anyone else who got hurt shortly after the battle. Lucius Alexander The palindromedary says this guy needs to get in a 12 step program, just as soon as the war is over.
  25. That's one of the things you have to decide - how, exactly, will poisons and diseases work in your game? In so far as we have a "standard" answer in Hero, it's usually assumed that they are attacks (probably Drains) that work against an Alternate Defense, namely, Life Support: Immunity. Lucius Alexander The palindromedary wants Life Support: Diplomatic Immunity
