Her military service is relevant because someone who has sworn or affirmed an oath to support and defend the Constitution should know better than to violate someone else's First Amendment right to free speech.

Her Playboy appearance is relevant because some people would consider what she did with the flag there to be as bad as or worse than what the protesters were doing with theirs.

Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but MY personal opinion is that only a minority of police officers are criminals and murderous monsters. The majority of police officers are the type who feel that having civilians murdered by police is a lesser evil than holding police accountable for their actions.

There aren't any good cops. GOOD cops would arrest the murderous cops and see to it that they got convicted.

It's no consolation at all for me, as someone who doesn't believe in any kind of afterlife. We need to create justice here and now, in the world that we actually live in, not shrug our shoulders and assume that the score will be settled later.

Like a Marlin 1894 Cowboy Limited in .45 Colt, with a 20-inch octagonal barrel, equipped with a Marbles tang sight and given a custom action job?

There are better pics online, but this one is mine . . . and yes, it's fun to shoot.

I should point out that I use the tang sight without an insert, so that it acts like a ghost ring sight. I'm not sure what that would do for long-range accuracy, but it works VERY well for timed shooting at moderate ranges.

Isn't Supergirl known for changing her costume frequently? They've got a built-in excuse to change it if it's not "working" on-screen.

It isn't about sex so much as it is about gender. One is biological, the other is social.

In any case, it doesn't really matter whether you approve or not. "Pursuit of happiness" is a basic civil right, and if someone happier living as the "other" gender, it "neither picks your pocket nor breaks your leg" to let them.

Vondy, the quality of your arguments has gone downhill lately. This sounds less like a carefully reasoned argument and more like a rant about how it makes you angry that people are starting to call you on your bullcrap. Furthermore, you lose track of (what I take to be) your main point and spend most of your post ranting about how political correctness is oppressive.

Then you shouldn't expect anyone to acquiesce to YOUR subjective beliefs, either. For instance, you shouldn't be allowed to mutilate a baby boy's penis because your religious beliefs say it's okay.

I absolutely agree--that's one of the best arguments against religion.

I sadly predict that Vondy's response here will be an accusation of anti-Semitism or some such emotional response, rather than an honest reflection on whether he's unfairly privileging his own beliefs over others. He also likes to accuse me of not addressing his arguments, which were: 1) transgenderism doesn't reflect biology, and 2) political correctness sometimes leads to people criticizing things I say. So, here goes:
    1) No duh.
    2) " I can't remember where I heard this, but someone once said that defending a position by citing free speech is sort of the ultimate concession; you're saying that the most compelling thing you can say for your position is that it's not literally illegal to express."

Now, I've made some uncharitable predictions about Vondy's behavior, so I'm cooking up a big juicy humble pie with a side of crow here. I would rather be wrong than right in those predictions, and I apologize in advance if I am.

This is one reason I like the Clint Eastwood western "Unforgiven." The movie deconstructs the heroic consequence-free violence quite thoroughly.

How the heck does anyone living in the 21st century fail to realize that stuff like this is no longer acceptable? I can understand someone still having private prejudices, and even still thinking that they "should" be allowed to express them, but how is anyone so unaware as to think it's okay to act like that in public?

So if a geeky guy recognizes that he's part of the problem--say, for instance, he knows that he wasn't really adequately socialized, and doesn't have much experience with women (in his 30s and never had any kind of romantic relationship)--what should someone like that DO? It's not as though he can say "well, for the sake of being fair to women, starting today I will have different brain wiring and social history."

Ironically, while a GPS receiver can tell you where you are, it CANNOT tell you what direction you are facing. I'd say that a GPS receiver would be Detect Location on Earth, OAF, Requires GPS Signal.

To start with, the formula for kinetic energy is E = 1/2 * m * v^2. Using the numbers above, this works out to 1.425 x 10^7 joules. That's fourteen and a quarter million joules.

But let's take a different approach. Assume Spiderman brings the train to a stop in twelve seconds (I'm just pulling this number out ot the air--watching the movie with a stopwatch would give you a much more accurate final result). This gives us an acceleration of 29.0576/12 = 2.421 m/s^2. (Incidentally, this is about 1/4 g)

Force = mass x acceleration = 33762.2 x 2.421 = 81740 Newtons. So how much is that? A Newton, the unit of force in the metric system, is the amount of force which will cause one kilogram of mass to accelerate at one meter per second per second. At the surface of the Earth, gravity imparts about 9.81 m/s^2 acceleration, meaning that a kilogram weighs 9.81 Newtons. So, exerting 81740 Newtons of force is equivalent to holding up 81740/9.81 = 8332 kg, or 8.332 metric tons. This works out to a STR of about 43 or so.

You could also just multiply the mass of the train by its acceleration in gravities for the same result: 33762.2 x (2.421/9.81) = 8332.

For Spidey's actual STR score, consider that he may have been Pushing and adjust accordingly.
