It is amazing, given that I am confident I could pick up any supplement from any edition and use it in my 6th Edition game because the system is close enough that I could integrate on the fly.

Obviously, us fans are invested in the rules and versions of the rules, the marketplace demands new product.  To that end, a company will repeatedly update, refresh and republish its rules, it needs to constantly produce money to stay in money and over time, a new edition is a more guaranteed money generator than anything else.

Beyond that, most writers began as fans and want to see their vision of the game immortalised in an edition - they want to show everyone else their vision of the game. In the olden days this was an issue - the rules were printed and bought, and if a new edition came out, it was impossible to get enough copies of older editions for a new group (and there was no ebay to scour).  Today, there is ready access to the text of EVERY edition.  Everyone can play the edition they most enjoy and access those rules for any players in their group that wants them.  There are no edition cops who will swoop down on you to confiscate illegal rulesets and to punish BadWrongFun.

We should, now, be able to watch new editions with interest, choose to change our games in the light of that edition (or not) and to ponder the merits of old versus new without the heat, there is nothing at stake beyond personal opinion.  New editions HAVE to change things if they are to be worth producing - I would be SEVERELY upset if I bought 7th edition and it was essentially a word for word rehash of ANY previous edition.  I have them all...

Ok. Mysterio does a complicated series of holograms and backing sounds, heat flairs, and smell pods to create his illusions? How is that different than Kraven the Hunter spraying your face with a hallucinogenic drug? Or being in the vicinity of The Purple Man? So mental powers vs CON are ok, but mental powers vs INT not ok? Or physical powers vs EGO, like mental paralysis? Why is one ok and the other not? Why do we have the powers Mental Illusions and Mind Control and not Drugged Illusions and Drugged Surgestions? Why? Because it all boils down to Special Effects. Kraven's hallucinogenic drug is Mental Illusions with the appropriate limitations. Same with The Purple Man's commands (except for Mind Control vs CON).

So, why is Mystero's illusions different enough that we have to go the Images rout? Sure, everyone can perceive them. So what.

One of the APG has a great thing about "Based on Characteristics". It is a good thing to look over.

Should Images be kicked to the side? Honestly I don't know. But I will have a hard time convincing you that Images = Illusions, and you will have a tough time convincing me that Images, in there purest function <> Illusions.

I tend to treat INT that way: each point makes you one smarter, like Spinal Tap's amplifiers.  In game, I try to work it out so someone who has higher INT can work out clues faster, get notes helping them out more, etc.   In truth, however its defined in the rules, intelligence in Hero means more perception, memory, and speed of thought than it does actual smarts.  Someone very, very smart but slow (such as my buddy who is an actual nuclear physicist who worked at Hanford reactor in summers while in college) was very slow and methodical but terrifyingly intelligent.  Someone can have a super fast mind and be really stupid otherwise.

I used to give free background points at character generation for each point of INT (non-combat stuff) but I dropped that after a while because it was just trying to benefit higher INT and in Hero, intelligence doesn't equate to experience or wisdom.

I don't think there's any need for a shared carefully constructed cinematic universe.  Just make good, fun movies, and once in a while you can have crossovers, who cares if they're all part of one big ongoing story or not?

Abrams' first Star Trek movie wasn't terrible, but archer's right, the guy doesn't understand what makes Star Trek Star Trek.  HIs aren't Star Trek movies:  they don't examine the human condition; they don't turn a critical eye toward social issues or even posit a positive view of the future.  They're slam-bang popcorn action flicks with Star Trek trappings.  The Force Awakens wasn't a terrible movie but it's really just a remake, so he gets scant credit from me for that.

His production company might find a way to make some good DC movies but I wouldn't let him personally near one.

Why merge Images and Mental Illusions when they do two different things with different mechanics?  I'd rather fold Images into Change Environment (and no, I am not advocating that).

If I have to pay 5 points to ad 1d6 of HTH damage, and I can pay 5 points for +5 STR which gives me HTH damage, lifting, Grab, Escape, etc. etc., why would I ever buy HTH attack?  A martial arts DC costs less and does more.  Maybe we should price non-martial DCs at 4 points (or just price HTH DCs at 4 points, and "damage only" DCs at 3 points).

My comments on HKA vs RKA are upthread somewhere, but I would merge the two and get rid of "STR adds to HTH" as a mechanic.  There's your real orphan mechanic!

Personally, if invited to a table of Hero System, I wouldn’t mind which edition I would be playing at all as long as I’m playing it.

People on these boards love to rip on edition x because, reasons.  Truthfully, it usually just boils down to personal preference... at the risk of sounding like a hippy I will say live and let live.

Or to put it another way, it's highly unlikely that you ripping on an edition because you personally don't like feature x or y will change someone's opinion.  In fact it's more likely to have the opposite effect.  By all means though tells us all again about how hideous the damage shield rules are because that's going to be the critical flaw in 6th edition that will send those users into a book burning frenzy 🙄

I think what Duke is getting at is, in Champions II it was Light Illusions; you rolled dice and compared it to INT.  However, I did a bit of digging, and in 3rd edition at least, both Mental Illusions and Telepathy were compared to INT (not EGO) as well.  Mind Control and Mind Scan were both compared to EGO, as expected.

(It was called Images in FH 1e, with the same mechanic as in Champions II; FH also had Sounds, which was the same mechanic but for... sound.)

Here's some of what's in my "what I'd do to 7th edition"
Increase cost of Endurance Stat  to 3 END per 1 point Increase cost of Recovery Stat to 3 REC per 2 points Followers/Summon: not 5 points to double, but a percentage of total cost (so super cheap creatures are not more expensive to double than just buy) but with max cost System that allows Aid to grant powers rather than simply enhance Restructure Mental powers to be less like presence attacks and more like transform Rebuild power defense: 3/2 for everything, 1/1 for specifics; but always resistant (-½ limitation to be non-resistant) Change Environment can create some positive effects, less about saving throw effects and more about altering environment Flash defense for non combat senses = -½ limitation Growth strip away all stat bonuses, leave only reach etc, recost Rebuild Deflection (add in reflection as a variant) Return Missile Deflection but clarify to be not everything rather missiles and similar attacks rather than allowing everyone to deflect ranged attacks Healing does not have a time limit on it, increase cost to 15/d6 and suggest limitations Reintroduce Spirit Rules Make HA and Blast into one attack with either STR adds or range Return Transfer as a Talent-like build (ie all the math is in the background) Return Instant Change as a Talent-like build (ie all the math is in the background) Add in some of the APG ideas Recostskill levels so they are more attractive than just CV Better, clearer version of Hero Points (don't start with 2d6 for one thing) In the "breaking things/environment" section note how to use adjustment powers on non-statted items like fires, etc in a simple manner Adjacent Sense Modifier = up to 5m distant AE "Surface" double in area for cost AE "Any" double in area for cost Damage over Time becomes "Effect Over Time" allowing broader conceptual use. Simplify Skill list (reduce overlap, strip down skills like TF and WF to simpler structures) I like the idea of the "takes no Body" option, it makes sense for some builds and concepts.  You cannot kill it, only defeat it, temporarily.

Being stunned happens in the source material, cinematic, comic books, and prose.

If you find mental powers "all or nothing" effect, then either your mental villains are too powerful (Menton) or your heroes don't have any reasonable defenses against them. Or vice versa.

Presence Attacks happen in the source material.

Except every other primary stat loses some effect by doing this. And INT doesn't gain anything.
Every point of STR increases your lifting capability by 15% cumulative.
Every point of DEX improves your chances of going first. Indeed, this was determined to be so useful that the cost of DEX is 2CP per point.
Every point of CON decreases your chances of being stunned, which is determined per pip of STUN damage you take from attacks.
Every point of EGO decreases your chances of being affected by powers like Mental Illusions, Mind Control, and Telepathy, which is determined per pip of effect rolled by those powers.
Every point of PRE decreases your chances of being affected by Presence Attacks, which is determined per pip of effect rolled when a PRE Attack is made.

INT is the only primary stat that doesn't gain anything per point.

Removing the granularity from the other primary stats won't improve INT's game effects one bit, but every other stat would be screwed.

Cauliflower pairs very well with cheese, my mom used to roast a whole head then serve it with melted cheese over the thing, man that was good.  I don't like people pulling the switcheroo on people "try it, its like pasta!"  Its better to get people to be surprised with how great something they thought they hated can be.

I would argue that Fourth Edition was a sweeping change to Hero System, consolidating elements from its diverse genre-specific predecessor games, and changing and adding to many of their mechanics to attempt to be truly universal. Fifth was essentially a refinement and clarification of Fourth. Sixth altered more things, but is still the same game in most ways.
