Un-manly? He went hand-to-hand with a flerken and only lost an eye!

I don't get why so many folks (it's not just here) are bagging on the flerken.  They're an established part of the Marvel universe; they weren't just invented for this movie.  Yeah, Marvel has a history of stupid-ideas-as-aliens, but honesty, most of the early comic book aliens were goofy ideas.  That hasn't gone away, it's just that now the odd ideas are created for deus-ex-machina roles instead of being the majority of aliens.  Honestly, DC comics seems to think that it's not possible for aliens to not have incredible super powers, but folks don't tend to bag on them so much.

There.  It's not that I'm in love with flerkens.  It's just a point I had to make.  I made my once-a-decade trip to reddit and was overwhelmed with flerken hate-- which I suspect is from people whose first exposure to flerkens was this movie.

I guess I'm the only person here who is completely fine with the idea that Fury lost his eye in some un-manly accident?

Wait, so you formulated a negative opinion without learning what Brie Larson actually said (and in full context)? Well that's disappointing.

Yon-Rogg does sound more like a Lovecraftian entity than a Marvel villain.

I was thinking about that last night, and I kinda feel that Tom Cruise played Pete Mitchell as your typical full-of-himself naval aviator, but the plot saddled him with a crippling lack of confidence (and a considerable amount of guilt) in the second act with the death of Goose. It was the turning point in the film where he went from being an obnoxious pr*ck to being a relatable human being you started to feel something for.

Carol Danvers, on the other hand, never really went through a similarly "humbling" experience. Sure, she started to doubt her own personal history, but that smug sense of self-satisfaction was always there. I never really felt she showed a vulnerable side, the way Pete Mitchell did, both in terms of his somewhat awkward pursuit of "Charlie" and in terms of his psychological journey back into the cockpit.

So while she might have been modeled on Pete "Maverick" Mitchell to some extent, I don't see her as a perfect analog, and certainly not in terms of the arc their personalities and character development.

I heard it suggested in some YouTube video that if Godzilla really wants to shift the odds in his favor, he should take the fight (with Ghidorah) into the ocean.

Well, it's a bit more subtle than that. There is a lot of momentum behind lifting up female characters at the expense of the male characters in entertainment right now. We are watching the pendulum of sexism swing past the Equality mid-point and over to the Grrl Power At All Costs end of the arc. It isn't usually very blatant, because the pendulum isn't that far at the extreme end (yet), but it is hard not to detect a certain Making Up For Lost Respect that is woven into the fabric of a lot of movies and tv shows today that appear to be going above and beyond to squeeze as much diversity and female empowerment into the frame as possible. And sometimes the writers seem to feel a need to marginalize men/masculinity along the way, even if only in subtle (but noticeable) ways.

I liked the blowing up the missiles thing. Felt like an homage to Missile command where you blow up the other missiles with the first one.

The "lightspeed engine" that Mar-Vell was working on was on a whole other level compared to the technology in Kree vessels (or anyone's vessels for that matter). I think the fact that it took 22 hours for Yon-Rogg's ship to reach Earth from Hala (or wherever it started) served two purposes in the story. One, to give our heroes time to prepare for their arrival. And two, to show just how limited space travel is for even a highly advanced civilization like the Kree. I think the Bifrost was the closest to what Mar-Vell was close to achieving, but the Bifrost was limited to travel to/from Asgard, whereas Mar-Vell's engine could be theoretically built into any vessel and transport it anywhere in the MCU instantaneously (because that's what the Space stone does).

The Fox acquisition will close on March 20. My guess is that Gunn's "time out" was so that there wouldn't be any objections.

Peggy Carter aged and died like a normal person. Tony Stark has aged visibly during his tenure as Iron Man; and if you count the young version of him we see in the holographic simulation, the MCU definitely acknowledges that Tony has grown up and aged like a normal person as well. Nick Fury has definitely aged (thanks to digital de-aging fx) during his time with SHIELD. The thing is, the MCU has only been around for a decade, telling stories that mostly take place during that one decade. There simply hasn't been enough time to notice that a character has failed to age "properly", if in fact that is ever going to happen (outside of characters that age much more slowly than humans, like Asgardians).

I hope this silences all the odious trolls claiming that Brie Larson's pro-feminist posturing was going to tank her film and cost Marvel $100M or more at the box office opening weekend.

Yeah, but therein lies what I feel is the fundamental flaw in their thinking: that they have to do an alternative take in the first place. ("They" being anyone, especially WB/DC, who is in the business of telling these stories.)

For a long time there's been growing pressure mounting for Marvel to make a female-led MCU movie, and we know they always planned to do one at some point. The question was always where to fit it into the crowded slate given the long-term plan for the MCU. Until the roadmap for Infinity War became clarified, and the shift to a more "cosmic" MCU was solidified, it was difficult to find a spot for this movie (this is the same reason it's been so hard to get a Black Widow movie going). Sure, Wonder Woman beat Marvel to the punch here, but saying Captain Marvel is some kind of response to Wonder Woman ignores the fact that Captain Marvel was probably in development long before WW hit theaters and became a box office success.

And as for the fact that the character's name matches the name of the company, well I think that was just a serendipitous bonus, and not an essential factor in the choice.

The real tragedy here is that thanks to Fox failing for a second time to tell this story properly, it will likely be viewed as unsalvagably damaged goods by Kevin Feige, and we'll never see a good version of the Dark Phoenix saga from Marvel Studios.
