Interesting question. It's a lot easier to write around tragedy, and to explain the character's focus. I have a skater/surfer girl character who got her Marty McFly-style gravity board because she was so damn good, and the super heroism just sort of happened when she saw a crime in progress. Virtually any other time I've seen such a positive origin it was generally because 1) Duty (Steve Rogers wanting to serve), 2) Idol Worship (Sidekick wanting to be like a mentor).
