  1. Re: Creepy Pics. You can just hover and look at the url to get the crime's name. More than that, I do not need to know. Crimes against children have always bothered me. When I became a parent, they enraged me. I remember reading about a couple who let their 3mo child starve because they were high for several weeks straight. My eldest has the same name as that child and he was about five months old when I read that. That hit me hard. I didn't get enraged. I wept.
  2. Re: Superhero Costume Party I read a Batman story once where he went to a costume party in his costume. He had planned differently, but had to stop a heist on the way. He didn't have time to change back into the planned costume. He thought to himself later that he shouldn't have been worried. There were 3 other batmen there, and they all looked more authentic than his!
  3. Re: Quote of the Week From My Life. Me: The sad thing is, I am sure it made perfect sense to my predecessor to name the file "editview" when it, in fact, contains not one field that the user can edit.
  4. Re: Destroy Your Geek Cred!! I haven't seen anime in over seven years. The last one I tried to watch just didn't interest me even after several episodes. I read a lot of Pern, but after Skies of Pern, I put the book down and said, "Never again will I waste my time with this." There are a lot of sci fi authors I never intend to read, including "must read" series. I own no Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr. Who, etc. merch. I have a couple of ST novels, but nothing more. I have never owned a gaming console. In college, my roommate had a super Nintendo, but I never owned one (though I played that thing like crazy). Never even picked up a single Harry Potter book or watched one of the movies. I find Java too complex to be usable for me. My favorite programming language is Delphi (a Pascal descendant).
  5. Re: I have a dream. (and MAN was it wierd!) I graduated from high school in 1994 from a town in Oklahoma. This is important to the following. I dreamed last night that it was 1997 and I was a senior in high school in Indianola, Iowa (which is where I work). I was also chapter FFA president (this is true to life). However, I knew I was in the wrong timeline, but I had mixed memories. I remembered my past in Calera. Moreover, I remembered my life from high school on (college, seminary, marriage, jobs, bivocational pastor). But I knew people in Indianola, too. I knew my class schedule and the people from Indianola that I don't know in the real timeline. It was the day of an FFA speech contest, so those of us who were going were in our official dress: blue and gold jackets, white shirts with ties (men) or scarfs (ladies), and black slacks (men) or skirts (ladies). As I said, I was chapter president, so that was stitched on my jacket right under my name. Walking to my first class of the day (Ag), I spotted someone else in the jacket. Someone I know in real life because we work together (she is actually from Indianola). Her jacket said she was chapter vice-president. I stopped her in the hallway and explained the situation of dual memories and being from the future. "Why are you telling me this?" she asked. "Because in that timeline, we are also friends, and I need someone I can trust."
  6. Re: The "Nice Happy" Thread Finished the first draft of my short story "This Body of Death" last night. Though 19K words doesn't seem to me as a short story. My editor asked me to write it after he read "New Life." Now I need to edit and get those to him for a collection.

  8. Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? Thanks. I'll check that out.
  9. Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? Apologetix Corinthians Corinthians Parody of "In the End" by Linkin Park (1 Cor. 13) It starts with love Young thing -- I don't know why You didn't read the letter our Lord supplied With that in mind I revised this rhyme to explain to you guys all I know Love is a wonderful thing Watch the fly guys with the Benjamins sing Watch the countdown that the MTV plays I got ticked by the way It's so unreal -- Britney and Jennifer Lo Watch the wardrobe -- looks like a window Tryin' to hold on to itty bitty clothes You pasted them on -- this is not true love I guess everything's a hybrid breeding love and pride In small jealous hearts What it gets to be is essentially just a parody Like this rhyme is of Linkin Park You tried so hard -- but love's so far Corinthians -- it doesn't even matter If love's too small -- you lose it all Corinthians -- first letter, thirteenth chapter Love waits -- it's also kind It doesn't envy, brag, or grow hard with pride Keeps things polite, doesn't like to fight It denies itself, while it tries no harm If I have the faith and philosophy Acting like I was smarter than Socrates And every language and tongue and prophecy I could die and not go far If at the stake they burned me or I could've given every dime to many poor If love's lackin' throw me back then Buddy, Paul wrote that to Corinthians It bears everything, besides, believes and hopes, abides That Paul fella's smart Love he said to me will eventually keep no memory Of your crimes 'cause it finds no fault CHORUS It likes what's just and true Dislikes what's unrighteous though Failure is the only one thing it can't know The things that last are few Just have faith and love and hope From all these, there's only one thing you need most 1 Cor. 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

  11. Re: The cranky thread Woke up to a flitter of wings above my head. Fourth bat in the house in 2 years. Second one in two weeks. Results of the last bat's test were indeterminate. Have calls in with bat control businesses in the area for estimates to perform exclusions and inspections. When I called the county wildlife people, the lady recognized my voice. "You've got another one?"
  12. Re: Quote of the Week From My Life. In college, I was friends with a brother and sister. I was, in fact, in the brother's small group Bible study. One day I called her dorm to ask her out. Sarah: No, I'm just not looking for a date right now. Me: Okay. I understand. Sarah: Hey, you know my brother right? He's here. Chris, didn't you have something you needed to ask Frank? Chris (shouting in surprise): That's Frank! The next day or so, Chris said in the group (he asked me if he could do this first): Chris: Guys, there is a new member of the Rejected-by-Sarah Club. Heath: Growing group. Is she planning to be a nun? Chris: No. But the new member is Frank. Cheers from all around. Chris: Your liking my sister has no bearing on our friendship. You're a great guy, and I would be honored if she had said yes. Me: Thank you. Chris: And, Frank, I completely understand. The other day in the cafeteria, I spotted a girl with her back to me, and thought, "Wow, she is hot! Who is she? Wait, that's my sister! Argh!" Roomful of facepalms. Me: Was she wearing the white jeans and light pink top? Chris: Ye-es. Jeff: That is a really good outfit on her. Ken: I like the one she has with the- Chris: We can stop now. Really.

  15. Re: Foods for those that just don't care anymore A friend used to bring squirrel with dressing to office parties (but only if he had fresh squirrel that he had shot himself. He was from Arkansas). He stopped that before I was in that office, though.
  16. Re: Foods for those that just don't care anymore Alton Brown did a BLT salad once. That made the slippage (everything sliding out the other side of the sandwich when you eat it) factor a nonissue.

  19. Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it... I read Troll Valley by Lars Walker. Genre is hard to pin down, but the book was fantastic. I have read everything Walker has written, and this was top notch. I liked it even better than Blood and Judgement (an excellent study in what it means to be human) and Year of the Warrior. I came away from TV comparing it to Til We Have Faces. The characters had depth. None were all good or all bad. It's well worth the read.
  20. Re: A Game Of Questions How many times must I tell you?
  21. Re: Kara Loft: Lost In The Sands Of Egypt Bolt - get the lid open. Assuming that breaks the spell, unwrap her face and arms enough so that she can get out the rest on her own. Place her clothes next to the sarcophagus and turn around. If opening and unwrapping doesn't break the spell, take her still wrapped back to the rest of the Crew and figure out how to break it.
  22. Re: I have a dream. (and MAN was it wierd!) I've had weird dreams the last three mornings, right before I wake up. Monday, my college girlfriend was breaking up with me. In person instead of by email (as it was in real life). We then went to a pizza joint with some mutual friends and made sure not to speak to one other. Tuesday, I was back working at my prior job, a nightmare of lotsa work, lotsa stress, and low pay. Stress brought on by the low pay, long commute, disagreements with one of the owners, and son's medical condition. Wed. This morning, I dreamed I was back in the summer after my first year of college and had been on a date with a girl I dated in high school. We were at my parent's house, and it was time for her to go home but as late as it was, I didn't want to drive her home. So she slept in my sister's room.
  23. Re: The Good and Bad about Marvel and DC My sons don't like Wolvie either. I'm with them. They've never seen him in anything, but he just "looks mean" (one of them has several sets of jammies with supers on them. Wolvie appears with Iron Man, Hulk, and Spider Man on one.) and at 4.5 and 2.5, they don't like people who look mean. Their favorite heroes: Spiderman and Iron Man. The oldest used to want to buy a space ship for us all to fly in. He's changed his mind now and wants to build Iron Man's costume. "So I can shoot beams out of my hands and fly!" Cutest thing to hear them sing the Spider Man song together: Sling us a web you're the Spider Man Sling us a web tonight! Cause you're brave and so strong and so limber now. But where'd you come up with those tights! We now return to your regularly scheduled thread topic.
  24. Re: The "Nice Happy" Thread I got home from work today feeling terrible. It was one of those days where nothing you try turns out right. I had accomplished so little except for discovering things that won't do what I need to be done. I walked in the door and my youngest (2.5) was standing at the top of the stairs, grinning. I climbed the stairs and he threw his little arms around me. "Daddy, I love you and am so glad to see you!" I felt so much better.
