  1. Re: A Few Slight Delays: Building a Hero System system and setting Yeah, Chris has good advice (as usual). You've got a good start on a lot of stuff that can be fleshed out, but unless you're particularly inspired to work on it, there's no rush to finish now. Let your players develop their characters as they see fit, and you just stay a step or two ahead of them. Do you have any ideas for how you'll handle multiclassing? I didn't see anything about it, and I'm sure someone will want to at some point. It would be a shame to say "no" to something like that while using the Hero System.

I've looked briefly at your advancement chart and it looks pretty good for what you said you're trying to do (zero to hero style game). I'd have to take a closer look at everything else to see how it fits.

And if they're buzzing around without approval and posing a hazard to legitimate air traffic, isn't law enforcement not only justified but ethically required to shoot them down?

Re: Master Villains Mirror Mirror challenge The old classic "Champions in 3D" has a universe called "Backworld" where Dr. Albert Zerstoiten (aka Professor Preserver) built Mechanon to help fight against the tyranny of the Golden Avenger. That's the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this thread.
  10. Re: Elephant's Strength Well, there's the school of thought that says since human average is 10 and superhuman starts at 30, then elephant average at 45 means superelephant starts at 65. They ignore the fact that Hero doesn't do things like that linearly, so many people say superelephant properly starts at 50.

Re: "Neat" Pictures Heh...a few months back, a bunch of guys at work came up with a bracket filled up with various superheroes, cartoon characters, movie characters, etc. They'd pick a match off their chart and spend a day debating over who would win, and then vote on the winner. I got recruited as the tie-breaker. They all agreed with the philosophy of "Batman always wins if he has time to prepare", but quite a few of them still haven't forgiven me for calling the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles over the T-800. Sorry guys, the TMNT beat robots all day long.

  13. Re: Order of the Stick Wasn't the point of that spell evil V cast to destroy the dragon and her kin so completely that there was no coming back? If it doesn't say outright that the souls are destroyed, it strongly implies it. EDIT: I suppose the "animate brain" interpretation of Speak with Dead would get around the soul thingy, but it doesn't seem to fit in a fantasy world, IMO. Traditionally, when you're speaking with the dead, you're talking to someone, not accessing a database.

  16. Re: Zeppelins Sails on airships is a great visual, and a great idea for fantasy, but I'm not sure how it's supposed to work in real life. Sails propel regular ships in directions other than straight downwind because of the resistance of the water against the hull of the ship. Airships have nothing to push against, except the medium that is pushing them. I can't see them getting any movement on any heading more than a few degrees off straight downwind.
  17. Re: Early Firearms I don't think it was mentioned earlier in the thread, but the Lewis and Clark expedition carried an air gun or two along with them, that they used mostly for hunting, but also occasionally for the "impress the natives" bit.

Re: Looking for stats on Civil War era Artillery pieces If there are any official rules, they're statted up as part of some of the ships in The Ultimate Vehicle and the vehicle guide (which I think is called "The Hero System Vehicle Guide"...it's been way too long since I've been able to play). Personally, I would put that particular weapon at 3d6 to 3d6+1 (my table lists 1.5" as 3d6 and 1-pdr as 3d6+1). I think the official damage ratings for a lot of artillery is less than I would rate it, but ships are also less sturdy than I would make them. Reload time is probably 2 Full Phases or so. Probably only needs two crew members for maximum rate of fire. I have a set of house rules about black powder weapons posted somewhere on the forums which cover firing artillery with less than full crew, double shot, ball and grape, etc, which may be of interest.

  23. Re: Something like Ghost Rider for 5th on 250 points. Are we talking comics Johnny Blaze, Danny Ketch, or the movie Johnny Blaze, who seems to be a sort of hybrid? I'd say the Ketch version's gaze attack (the one that makes the target feel the pain of his past victims...I can't think of the official name) would be an Ego Attack, with a Requires Eye Contact limitation. His chain is an HKA, with an Autofire RKA with Lockout limitation. His bike has Flight, Surfaces only, and probably Superleap as well, for when surfaces aren't good enough. The comics Blaze version's hellfire blast would be an Energy Blast with a linked Ego Attack. This version also has a Summon Vehicle power (that bike made of hellfire he made every now and then, when his normal bike got trashed). The Summoned bike has movement powers like the Ketch version's bike. I'm not sure about Disads, except that Ketch is hunted by enemies of the Blaze Ghost Rider, as well as Johnny Blaze (-Zarathos). The Blaze Ghost Rider obviously has those enemies (although they didn't seem to bug him as much as they do Ketch), Watched by Mephisto (much more powerful!), Accidental Change, and probably some kind of Psych Lim due to guilt over the things Zarathos sometimes does while he's in power. The movie version doesn't have to deal with Zarathos...he seems more like the Ketch "Spirit of Vengeance" rather than an unruly demon that Mephisto linked to Blaze to keep him out of his hair. I need to be getting to bed, but if you need help with points levels and whatnot, maybe I can give some advice this weekend.

Maybe it runs across the bar girl's foot as she's bringing out a tray of beers, she screams and spills them all over some tough guy who sees nothing wrong with beating up a woman. No decent PC will allow that.
