I heard Odin's speech about the hammer being a focus (rather than a source) for Thor's power, and immediately I thought, "So, Thor just got the experience points to buy off the OIF Limitation on his powers."  Is that wrong?

I believe that this is the entire problem CBS has with Trek right now.

They are dishonest in both intent and how they deal with the existing fan base,, they repeatedly say one thing and do a completely different thing.  And then make believe it never happened.

Is Star Trek (TV) their IP?  Yes.
Can they do what ever they want with it?  Absolutely.
Is announcing the intent to do one thing and then doing something completely different a good sales tactic?  Nope, In the real world that is known as Bait & Switch and is considered a con.

The Prime Universe timeline has existed for over 50 years and has been embraced by millions.  Even when the original show had been written off as a failure, the fans were there and those same fans embraced and launched the moves and then TNG and the rest.   When they created the new movies (Kelvin timeline) some liked it some didn't, but the only controversy was the controversy generated by magazines and web-blogs desperate for clicks.

In this case CBS announced that the new series would continue in the existing Prime timeline ten years before TOS and then immediately changed everything.  Literally everything.

Like Twilight tried to transform Vampires from ancient evil entities into glitter dusted boytoys, the first look at STD has the hardened no nonsense Klingon warrior race transformed into pimped out somethings.  Their equipment went from tough utilitarian tools and weapons to gaudy for gaudy's sake.

All technology follows functional reasoning.  Form follows function.  That is why there are so few overall changes.  A ship today and a ship built in the 1800's is still recognizable as a ship, with the biggest noticeable change being masts and sails.   But overall if you line them up, you can easily trace the evolution of the ship from the past to present.

Fictional settings are not different.  You pick the parameters of the rubber science and go.  TOS was created in a TV era where continuity wasn't a thing and no effort was expended to try and make things fit.  But they did establish a few general "rules".   When the movies sparked Treks return the new series (TNG, DS9, etc) did try to maintain continuity and did so.  Each new series adding to the "rules" and the canon.  When they did ENT they realized that a major issue was blending into the timeline when TOS on screen tech was obviously behind real world current tech.  They set the new series 100 before TOS.  But even with the visual update the overall ship designs and uniforms did look like they could have been before TOS.  Any fan could take the ships and draw a progressing line from ENT to TOS to TNG to DS9 to VOY.  Fudging a little to compensate for Hollywood Tech they all still held up.

But here comes STD.  Ten years before TOS and the ship design does not fit anywhere.  There is no path from ENT to STD to TOS.

If they would have been honest up front and said they were creating a new stand alone Trek then they might have succeeded.  Fans would watch a new reboot for all the lamentations for a fans favorite series.   But they didn't.

    1) They say that Axanar is great, and then when it looks to be a massive hit, they reversed and killed it.

    2) They see Trek fans as a collective herd of stupid idiots who will automatically hand them money so they pander with the Bait & Switch promise about the Prime timeline.

    3) They blithefully intone "Ignore our lies and subscribe to a web stream for only one show that isn't what we promised".

    4) They repeatedly make believe 1 through 3 didn't happen and anyone that doesn't like being mislead is a whiner, ensuring anyone that was on the fence gets pissed off and leaves.

I'm not sure what choice they really have, in that particular instance. I mean, if I had a cinematic universe that was literally making billions of dollars, I'd try to make the rest of my properties as cinematic-friendly as possible.

Yes, but given that no one in film had ever done anything like it before, I think it's fair to give Marvel props for it.

I think you're giving them too little credit IMO. I don't think they had everything plotted out when they made the first Iron Man movie. But having Fury name-drop the Avengers in the post-credits scene, and then having Stark name-drop them in the Hulk post-credits scene, was a pretty clear tip they were hoping to go that direction.

I almost feel like the way DC keeps announcing all these movies they have planned is mostly about trying to generate "buzz" to get people to go see their current films. "See, we're building this cool, inter-related universe! You need to see all the movies, even if they suck, because without them you won't be able to appreciate the later ones! Trust us! Don't be left out!"

That reminds of my kitten dream (I really cant remember if I mentioned it here, been a long time, and too much ground to cover).  The mother had died, so I was trying to take care of them, they were at that time where they started opening their eyes (1 in 4 had).  Some jack*** came over and started threatening to hurt one of the still blind ones (he had grabbed it and roughly jerking it around).  What did I do?

I shot that b**t**d in the chest, what else was I supposed to do?     (when awake and analyzing the dream, it was a bit shocking how nonchalant my dream self was in doing that.  But, my dream self was their adoptive mother, so you damn right I was going to protect them)

A while back, I dreamed that Little Girl Pariah was taking guitar lessons and we went to her first guitar recital. There were several other kids who played, and then LGP was up last. She came out and sat down, and they brought out her guitar. It was a Fender Stratocaster. She plugged it into an amp, and then played "Layla"-- the seven minute Derek and the Dominos version. The audience, including me, went completely nuts.

It might just have been the coolest dream ever.

I had taken on the persona of David Banner for this one.  I was working with some other "good" Hulk creature (not Red Hulk, but an unnamed green guy) to go after an evil Hulk (probably Abomination from the 2008 Incredible Hulk movie, but our enemy was never named in the dream either).  We chased the baddie around a few places, probably inflicting the usual incidental property damage, but couldn't catch him and he eluded us.  I had de-Hulked and talked with my comrade, trying to figure out our next move.  The radio crackled (we were somehow in a control room at this point), and the baddie came on the frequency.  We exchanged a few taunts and threats, and then the baddie made some comment about being in the rafters in some kind of big sports arena.  He then said, "I have someone who wants to talk to you."  Next, my son's voice crackled over the radio, saying in a frightened voice, "It's really scary up here."  A great swell of rage surged to life inside me, shooting through my limbs as I drank in the heady rush of power.  I felt my flesh rippling and growing as the Hulk metamorphosis took hold--

--and then the damn alarm went off, ruining a perfectly good Hulk-out.  I haven't been able to repeat a similar dream since.

I can't disagree with this.  Take away the costumes and Iron Man is still a good movie, so is Captain America, Avengers, etc.  The spectacle makes it fun but they are solid stories with solid acting on their own.

Yeah, it's pretty clear Snyder's approach is that if X isn't working, the solution is to add more X but dialed up to 11.

I can't disagree with this statement, but I think the problems go much deeper than that. Loyalty to the source material aside, the DC/WB movies just aren't very good. They're overstuffed and confusing, full of uninteresting characters that lack motivation, relatability, or narrative agency who don't change in any meaningful way and are overshadowed by empty spectacle and Big Emotional Moments that haven't been earned. You could theoretically make a decent movie where Superman is an entitled douche; us fanboys would've cried that it's not the real Superman, but the broader moviegoing audience wouldn't necessarily care. It's not just that they aren't making good Superman movies - they're just not making good movies period.

Yeah as I've said many times before, people who don't like Superman loved the new movies.  People who were actual fans, hated them.

Its like having a James Bond movie where he's a boat rental agent in Hawaii who has adventures saving sharks from nets and its all exciting and epic.  People who know nothing about James Bond might love it but fans will yell what the hell was that crap???

You can make the movies Snyder made, just don't make them about established characters with over a half century of lore.
Its okay to make some changes for the shift in media and your story.  Thor without red hair?  OK, meh.  Thor without a hammer, from Brazil, who solves crimes with his buddies Rick and TC in a helicopter?  No.

My wife isn't a comics fan and only has a passing familiarity with the characters. She likes comic book movies and TV shows (and other SF and fantasy shows and books, etc.), but has never been a comic fan. She also had absolutely no problem with the Zod neck snap.

Of course, on Vampire Diaries, that's pretty much how the vampire characters greet each other, so the constant staccato of snap-snap-snappity-snap-snap is something she's used to. (She's had her fill of vampire fiction of all media, though. Got a bit saturated with vampire and werewolf stuff over the last couple decades.)
