His family was dead. Cynthia , the love of his life, was dead. Only on account of his superior intellect, the education his parents had made sure he got, and sheer pigheadedness had allowed him to escape alive. He was no long a happy go lucky youth, just a resolved survivor with a natural charisma and a call to lead others to better lands. One by one, he found them, and they saw that he was talking sense. He didn't ask to be their beacon of hope, but by God, he'd look after them with the same love and gentle wisdom he'd been given at his now destroyed home.
