The cranky thread

2 weeks after having my knee replaced and the nearly constant pain is pushing me to the edge of sanity. It's not bad enough that, thanks to autism, I tend to feel more pain than most people. There's also the 5 holes through my tibia from the screws they had to take out from a previous surgery, and the fact the doctor seems to think 5mg hydrocodone should be plenty for the pain by now.

Relative to my pain level, that's like chopping off your finger and just taking a couple Tylenol. It may be time to find a pain management specialist on my own. My knee doctor used to be one of the best around (according to all the medical professionals I've talked to), but he seems to be phoning it in now that he's almost retired.

What's the status on the job hunt, tkd? Found any openings for person-who-kicks-other-people-in-the-head?

Still looking around. I applied to a bunch of places, but no luck yet.

Mainly looking for work outside of education. I've been in that field over 20 years, and it's time for a career change.

I hate Epson. Their ink cartridges are expensive and hard to find in stores.

I hate "cheap" imitations. They never work and are a total waste of money.

Epson used to retire their ink tanks about 3-4 years after the printer model goes out of program, as the print heads generally start failing after about 2 years or so of use. As the ink channels on the print head build up debris, the printer will go through more frequent cleaning cycles, which often uses up the ink more than actual printing does near the end.

That sucks! Another reason not to buy from them.

I am bereft. The Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant closet to me has closed. True I can go to another but it means a very long walk or a bus/tube journey. The same is true for McDonalds but they never had a local presence. And in the economic climate what becomes of the employees who you came to recognise ? The only other chain that is now local is Subway and that has only just opened.

Write a book.  Or kick someone in the head.

I know!  Kick someone in the head and write about it!

More seriously, if you were thinking of a career change, any kind of class or seminar related to the target field would be a good idea.  It would help alleviate the boredom, and might help with networking and resume-space-filling as well.

I'm thirsty.

And some bastard shot the guys who sell me my Diet Pepsi.*

I hardly ever post in this thread, because whenever I open it, whoever just posted before me is usually going through much worse. That's still probably the same today, especially with the job woes. You guys all have my sympathy and best wishes.

Now I'm going to list all that's making me cranky:

1. F-ing murderers.

2. The f-ing news gives the description as "two men in a black Cadillac." REALLY? That will help the public ID these guys for the police. Two men! Were they short, tall, thick, thin, long-haired, short-haired, bald, what hair color did they have,  wearing clothes of what color, etc? Oh, and WHAT F-ING RACE WERE THEY? Yeah, let's leave off the MOST OBVIOUS F-ING IDENTIFIER FOR THE SAKE OF POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. Or the fear of riots? Whatever. Chicken...stuff media.**

3. The article didn't mention if anyone rendered first aid. I hope someone at least tried to apply direct pressure. Then again, I know this area is particularly bad about bystander syndrome, so I worry that someone may have bled out unnecessarily.

4. The day before yesterday, I moved my arm. Then I got excruciating pain from a 25 year old injury (torn muscle) that's been mildly bugging me lately. Couldn't move either arm or turn my head much until this morning. It was worse than the original injury, minus the swelling. Old age. Loving it.

5. I can't read small text any more. I mentioned that in the glasses thread. I got reading glasses like last year sometime. The G-damned things are made out of plastic, and even though I paid through the nose for the most scratch proof of plastics they had . . . I do NOT take them out of the house for fear of scratching them. Of course, indoors, most of my reading is off the computer screen, where I can just bump up the text size. . . feeling like it was a freaking waste.

6. Butt scars have been bugging me all weak. I still get the urge to put on my steel toed hiking boots and visit my first surgeon. Wife has hidden said boots.

7. I got a cool new gaming mouse. It's a Logitech G602. It's so responsive that my old mouse, which isn't really that old, feels like dragging a refrigerator across the desk in comparison. There's no going back. I've been using it for MMOs, because the ones I play don't have large tool bars, so the eight on-board (six on the side, two on top) buttons are great. BUT if I play too long, I get a repetitive stress pain in my thumb joint. The more I use the computer, the more I think it's just playing joint roulette with my tendons.

8. Renewing overpriced apartment for six months, so after September it'll be even more overpriced. Hopefully the stars will align and the people whose place we're buying will have their new place built on schedule so we can move on time. Otherwise, the rent goes WAY up for month to month.

9. Still worried about my dad's health and all associated crap should it not stay stable. He's doing well for now, though.

10. Our online income continues to take stupid hits due to stupid companies doing stupid things.

**Edited to add: They updated the story. One suspect in custody. News reports (after the fact) that the suspects were two young black males. I guess they were chickening out on giving a valid description due to the race riots (which are more about greedy bastards wanting an excuse to loot and cause chaos... the actual protestors haven't been violent; most of the 51 rounded up in Ferguson the other night were from out of town, just opportunistic criminals) in Ferguson. Anyway, the lack of reporting a description is annoying to me because the news had the story very soon after it happened. That info may have let other witnesses be of use to the police. Then again, these types of dumbasses usually get caught sooner or later.

10. I'd like to set up some online income one of these days when I'm not getting laid off annually.

9.  You'll stop worrying about this one day, but not until then.

7.  My carpal tunnel is so bad I can't use a mouse with my right hand for more than 15 minutes.

6. :nonp:

4. One of my engineers blew up his calf muscle going down stairs today.  He's going to be in a cast for a month.

2. Descriptions like this are always totally inadequate even if they include race.  White male age 35-45, 5'8" to 5'11", in a white t-shirt, driving a stolen white Toyota with stolen plates.

1. Yeah, f-k them.

A seminar sounds good. I have no interest in going back to school.

Going back to actual school is a pretty big commitment that's hard to make when you're looking for a job.  This last time I was looking, I made a point of going to all the industry lunches and meetings I ought to have been going to in my line of work, and I also dabbled in some meetings for the local startup/VC community.

  • 4 weeks later...

Do you guys not have indigenous fast food?

The only one is Harry Ramsden's Fish and Chips but thet are not everywhere. McDonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut are everywhere. Chinese Restaurants and Fish and Chip shops are usually not in chains.

Had a long day going out, getting stuff, seeing a theatre show in the cinema but could I get to sleep last night ? No. I was up early and back late so I should have been able to go to sleep. And one of my credit cards would not work which was because their Fraud Department thought it was suspicious that I was trying to get a cinea ticket (cost $25). Gee Thanks !
