Re: "Neat" Pictures

The old open cluster M67. I spent a few hours looking at this back in my grad school nights...

This is the cluster which my avatar is trying to represent, though the avatar is just a cut-down version of the very center of the cluster core. The fuller version (still of the cluster core) is here.

And ... the artificial image doesn't go anywhere near as "deep" as the "real" image (because the artificial image is from a list of measured star positions & brightnesses, and that source only listed things they could measure well, which means a couple of variable stars also are left out). The artificial image is rotated by about 90 degrees CCW with respect to the real cluster image as presented (that "real" image seems to be north-right east-up), and the "real" image looks to be presented with enhanced color (the reds redder, blues bluer than they should be).

Takashi Amano is a designer, photographer, and aquarist. He is credited with introducing Japanese gardening concepts into the aquascaping hobby; his aquascapes often mimic nature in their appearance, and can be regarded as a form of art.

Stelvio Pass

stelvio-pass.jpg

The Stelvio Pass is one of the highest Alpine Passes of Europe with its 2758 m. There are 48 hairpin turns on the northern side of the pass. The original road was built in 1820-1825 by the Austrian Empire to connect the former Austrian province of Lombardia with the rest of Austria, covering a climb of 1871 m. Since then, the route has changed very little. The 60 hairpin bends, 48 of them on the northern side numbered with stones, are a challenge to motorists.
