Bloodstone
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics So, going with this, what examples in comic books of such would be your favorites? One or two max for each please. WTH Hermit! Follow your own rules!
MisterBaldy
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics It really depends on the game, and who's running it. The majority of the time though...it's the Martial Artist, with a Mystic as a close second. My Martial Artists usually have some sort of weapons/gadgets to complement their abilities...but usually nothing to the level of Batman's pool of gadgets. st barbara
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics To "Zeropoint" for a super level "Brick" in your listing what about "A-ko Magami" from "Project A-ko" ("B-ko Daitokugi" could fit as a gadgeteer as well !) st barbara
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics Okay. What about the bad guys ? Here's a list, some of them a bit obscure, of villains for our lists of heros to fight ! Brick : Black Adam, Energy Projector : Sinestro, Gadgeteer: The Trapster, Martial Artist : Batroc, Mentalist: Mastermind, Metamorph : The Super Adaptoid, Mystic : Felix Faust, Patriot : Captain Nazi, Powered Armour : Titanium Man, Speedster : Professor Zoom, Weapons Master : The Predator (Carol Ferris) (Hmm Five "Marvel", Four "D C" nad a couple of "Fawcett" villains in that lot ! Ron
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics Brick: The Thing Energy Projector: Green Lantern (any but Hal Mass Murderer Jordan will do) Gadgeteer: Brainiac 5 Martial Artist: The Question (although he's much more the detective -- a missing archetype) Mentalist: Martian Manhunter Metamorph: Martian Manhunter Mystic: John Constantine Patriot: I don't like patriots, would Black Adam qualify? Powered Armor: Rocket Red Speedster: Flash (Jay or Wally but not Barry) Weapons Master: Green Arrow
assault
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics Hal Mass Murderer Jordan Sorry, you're getting confused here. Hal Jordan is not, and never was, a mass murderer. Another character with some similar attributes may have been. This was during a period in which many characters were distorted or destroyed by talentless hacks. Taking such stories seriously is a mistake. Mind you, continuity horrors aren't a recent innovation. I'm still not impressed by the Earth-1 Black Canary being the daughter of the Earth-2 one. I would have thought Green Arrow might have noticed that they weren't the same person... The fact is, of course, that they were, until some brainiac decided otherwise a decade after the Canary had moved to Earth-1.
Susano
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics I know you said "superhero comics", but I'm going to take a slightly different take. Brick--Bean Bandit (not a super-level character, but the most impressive relative to his setting) Energy Projector--Lina Inverse Gadgeteer--Boy Detective Narutaki, Skuld Martial Artist--Alita (also brick and speedster, really) Mentalist--Tetsuo Shima, Legato Bluesummers Metamorph--Shin (Space Pirate Mito) Mystic--Lina Inverse, Belldandy Powered Armor--the Knight Sabers Weapons Master--Goury Gabriev, Vash the Stampede, Manji, Jubei I can't seem to think of any patriot or speedster types from anime/manga Agh! You beat me to it!!! Well... maybe, I'll work on it.
Susano
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics I know Alita (I like those books), I know I've heard the name Vash, but don't know what manga he belongs too. Every other name on your list was someone I had never heard of. Sorry. Vash is from Trigun. I have heard of 90% of the names on that list. Susano
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics Borrowing a trick from Zeropoint. Brick -- Eiko 'A-ko' Magami (Project A-ko), Kiddy Phenil (Silent Mobius), Tessa (Ninja Scroll) Energy Projector -- Afura Mann, Miz Mishtal, Shayla-Shayla, and Demon Goddess Ifurita (El Hazard), Royoko (Tenchi Muyo!) Gadgeteer -- Jim Hawking (Outlaw Star), Narutaki (Steam Detectives), Skuld (Ah! My Goddess!), Washu (Tenchi Muyo!) Martial Artist -- Alita (Battle Angel), Deunan Knute (Appleseed), Son Goku (Dragonball Z) Mentalist -- The Paper (Read or Die), Sonnet Barjie (Blue Sonnet), Tetsuo Shima (Akira) Metamorph -- Jean Jaquemonde (Striker) Mystic -- Dark Schnider (Bastard!!), Katsumi Liqueur (Silent Mobius), Lina Inverse (Slayers) Patriot -- N/A Powered Armor -- Biko 'B-ko' Daitokuji (Project A-ko), the Knight Sabers (Bubblegum Crisis and Bubblegum Crisis 2040) Speedster -- Alita (Battle Angel) Weapons Master -- Manji (Blade of the Immortal), Vash the Stampede (Trigun) In truth, anime and manga is loaded with Martial Artists, Mystics, and Weapons Masters. Of the rest, A-ko is the most "comic book" brick, which should come as no suprise considering her parents. The Knight Sabers are the powered armor team in anime, although B-ko has a strong comic feel to her and came first. I didn't list a Patriot because I couldn't think of any, but really, most sentai teams (i.e. "five-man" teams, such as the Power Rangers) are Patriots. Mentalists are common as well, and I could list a slew of "espers" if I wanted. The Paper, btw, controls paper, and has a number of classic telekinetic effects she can perform, which is why I made her a Mentalist. Sonnet and Tetsuo are both telekinetics as well, although they have exhibited powers like Mind Control and Mind Reading.
McCoy
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics Brick = Thing; Colossus Flying Brick = Superman; Rogue Energy Projector = Human Torch; Green lantern Gadgeteer = Reed Richards; Tony Stark Martial Artist = Batman; Wolverine; Iron Fist Mentalist = Professor X, Jean Grey Metamorph = Plastic Man; Mystique Mystic = Doctor Strange Patriot = Captain America Powered Armor = Iron Man Speedster = Flash Weapons Master = Hawkeye; Bullseye
Lord Mhoram
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics Martial Artist: The Question (although he's much more the detective -- a missing archetype) In the 52 series, apparently The Question will be something of a main character. During the "One year gap" Bats dissapears and Q will be the main guy in Gotham.
adidamps2
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics Super hero/villain favorites Brick = hulk, colossus, juggernaut, thanos Energy Projector = havoc, Cyclops, superman Gadgeteer = batman Martial Artist = batman, wolverine Mentalist = professor x, magneto??? The fact is, of course, that they were, until some brainiac decided otherwise a decade after the Canary had moved to Earth-1. Well, as much as I dislike Hal Jordan murdering several Green Lanterns, this, as far as I know, is part of the DCU's continuity. I can give you that the story is lame, however, even worse is ressurecting the man -- I just hated it. I used to be a DC boy, but the recent ressurection trend in the DC Universe is making it more and more like Marvel, especially with the Infinite Crisis (I read only up to #2, no spoilers please) hinting a back to the Silver Age DCU. I am now considering reading only author controled books to avoid this kind of problem.
st barbara
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics I sometimes think that "C-ko" (from "Project A-Ko") MUST be a mentalist. Trained Chicken
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics I took "patriot" out since I don't think it's a power set category (we've got another thread here telling why). Cap goes way beyond a single entry under a single archetype, which is why he's spawned so many clones and variations on the theme, which is why it might now be considered a class of characters- but "patriot" is really a loose set of Disads rather than a character class. Brick = Juggernaut! Energy Projector = Not a big fac of this kind of character. Also feels like it overlaps a lot of "weapons Master" types. I'll go with Superman for the heat vision. Gadgeteer = Mr. Fantastic, Batman Martial Artist = Daredevil Mentalist = Again, not a huge fan. The Leader I suppose. Metamorph = Mr. Fantastic again, Hank Pym Mystic = Rintrah (look it up if you have to) Powered Armor = Iron Man, first last and best. Speedster = Jay Garrick Flash, Max Mercury Weapons Master = Hawkeye, Bullseye, Captain America, Crossbones, Thor.

While I'm here, I'll play: Brick = Colossus, Captain Marvel (DC Comics) Energy Projector = Green Lantern (Kyle) Gadgeteer = Forge, Batman Martial Artist = Iron Fist, Tim Drake as Robin Mentalist = Phenoix (Rachel Summers/Grey whatever), Raven (Teen Titans) Metamorph = Mystique, Metamorpho Mystic = Dr. Fate, Temest (Garth, Original Aqualad) Powered Armor = Iron Man Patriot = Union Jack, US Agent, Rick Flagg Speedster = Nova (Rich Rider/Nova Corps), Kid Flash (Bart) Weapons Master = Taskmaster, Deathstroke. I forgot to change some of my answers from the post I copied and pasted.
TheQuestionMan
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics TheQuestionMan's Top Favourite Archetypes: Brick = Warpath (Marvel/X-Men) & Iron Munro (DC/Young All-Stars) Energy Projector = Cyclops (Marvel/X-Men) & Grifter (DC/Wildstorm) Gadgeteer = Mister Fantastic (Marvel/Fantastic 4) & Batman (DC) Martial Artist = Captain America (Marvel/Avengers) & Nightwing (DC) Mentalist = Karma (Marvel/X-Men) & Battalion (DC/Wildstorm) Metamorph = Copycat (Marvel/X-Men) & Beast Boy (DC/Teen Titans) Mystic = Magik (Marvel/X-Men) & Zatanna (DC/JLA) Powered Armor = Nova (Marvel/New Warriors) & Darkstars (DC) Patriot = Captain America (Marvel/Avengers) Speedster = The Target (Dynamite Entertainment) Weapons Master = Taskmaster (Marvel) & Jason Todd/Red Hood (DC) Cheers QM
Checkmate
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics Brick = Warpath (Marvel/X-Men) Good call on Warpath, although depending on what time in his career you take him, he goes from Martial Artist, to Martial Brick, to Uber Brick, back down to Martial Brick Mentalist = Battalion (DC/Wildstorm) I liked Battalion for the first few issues. Minor mental powers and uses weapons. Then you find out he could level the planet with his mental powers causing one to wonder what point is there to carry a gun? Powered Armor = Nova (Marvel/New Warriors) I love the new Nova, but I had a hard time of where to put him, Energy Projector, Power Armor, or Speedster. In the end I went with speester because that applies to any point in his career (and I H A T E!!!! Quicksilver).
Lawnmower Boy
Re: Your favorite Archetype examples in super hero comics Here's my favourite archetypical characters: Brick: Omac. Timberwolf and Tigershark come close behind. Energy Projector: Firelord or Tabitha "Boom Boom" Smith. Gadgeteer: Henry Pym. Martial Artist: Manhunter (Paul Kirk), though I bet that I'll love the Immortal Iron Fist(s?) when I get around to reading them. Mentalist : Going obscure here: Code Name: Assassin. I gather that he's been revived as a villain. Boo! Metamorph: The Creeper. Okay, he only has one alternate form, but still. Okay, you win: Shade, the Changing Man. Mystic: Can I go with the CU's own Doctor Tenebre? If not, the Phantom Stranger. Powered Armor: Stilt Man! No. Seriously. Patriot: Go the CU again for Avant Garde? If not, Union Jack. He's cool, and he has a Webley. Speedster: Johnny Quick. Weapons Master: Demon Hunter/Devil Slayer.
